No one hurt Made Nov 9, 2021, sent to the company Dec 13, 2021, published by CPSC Dec 28, 2021
The product, in the report: Disposable cigarette lighter
The consumer used the lighter 2 or 3 times prior to the incident.
11/9/2021: The consumer started the lighter, but the plastic part that is held down by the thumb, while the flames is emitted, caught fire. The consumer quickly blew out the flames with her mouth. There was no injury. Damage was limited to the lighter, because she placed it in a ceramic tray. Parts of the lighter are melted and deformed.
The consumer called the manufacturer and was transferring her to someone else, but there was a problem with the transfer. Another rep. came on the line and indicated the initial rep. was having problems with his phone. She was eventually transferred to a voicemail and the call was disconnected. Nothing else transpired with the firm at that time.
Later, the company’s rep. (name unknown), called the consumer and advised her to take the product back to the dealer for an exchange. The consumer is unsure of how she will proceed, but she will hold on to the product for a period of time, in CPSC would like to view it.

Good evening, my name is [REDACTED] and I am a staffer for [REDACTED] in his Washington, DC office. You wrote to our office concerned with the quality control on MK lighters because one of them exploded in your wife’s pocket. I contacted the Consumer Product Safety Commission, which regulates products such as these lighters, to ask what the federal safety standard is and why such a defective product was allowed onto the market in the U.S.
CPSC informed me that the federal safety standard is outlined in the Code of Federal Regulations. You can read the section of the code dealing with lighters here. It specifically states the testing and certification requirements that must be met by lighters, including imported lighters. CPSC suggested that you submit an online report regarding this incident at saferproducts.gov, so that the CPSC can review the incident in more detail.
Thank you very much for bringing this issue to our attention, unsafe products like this are certainly of concern, and I hope the CPSC’s response here is helpful. Please continue to contact our office with your thoughts, ideas, and questions going forward, we truly do appreciate hearing from you.
