The product, in the report: Genuine BIC lighters have a clear, sharp logo with consistent font and color. These do not. Counterfeits often show blurry printing, faded colors, or incorrect logo placement. The fakes have gotten better at printing logos/labels. Authentic BIC spark wheels have a uniform finish and smooth rotation. These are loose and have sharp edges. Fakes feel rough, misaligned, or have uneven teeth, making ignition unreliable. Indeed, these lighters take 3-4 flicks, whereas authentic Bics light the first time 99% of the time. Real BIC lighters have precise fit between the metal head and plastic body. I can place a fingernail between the metal head and plastic body. Knock-offs often show gaps, loose parts, or burrs on the plastic, as these do. Genuine BIC extinguishes flame in less than half a second after releasing the button. These tend to continue with a flame because fuel is leaking when the finger trigger is released. It’s the fuel continuing to escape. For sure, counterfeits often fail this test, with flames lingering for several seconds, which is a fire hazard. BIC lighters undergo drop tests and sputtering tests; fakes usually fail these, causing leaks or flare-ups. The flame sputters when lit, indicating that leaking is occurring around the seal. Extremely low prices or bulk packs from unverified sellers are a red flag. eBay is allowing this. As mentioned, genuine BIC lights consistently on the first try and maintains a stable flame. Fakes often fail to ignite or require multiple strikes and may sputter or spit fuel. The fact that eBay allowed these fake items to continue to be sold after a total of 5 complaints is concerning. They failed to conduct proper due diligence, but instead, used an automated process to decide without a human in the loop. Both responses to my online complaints came within 20 minutes of the submissions. It is evident that eBay does not carefully vet or investigate complaints regarding fake or unsafe/hazardous products.
I purchased a 50 pack of Bic lighters from an Ebay store on November 12. I received them November 15, 2025. I open the package and immediately noticed the packaging wasn’t typically how Bic packages or ships lighters. I test several of the lighters and examined them thoroughly. I have been using Bic lighters for 40 years. These were fake, fugazi, counterfeit Bics. I could smell the fuel leaking from the lighters and after a physical inspection it was determined the lighters were unsafe and a fire/explosives hazard. These should not be allowed to be sold on Ebay. Therefore, I submitted a report to Ebay online for 1) counterfeit product 2) Unsafe product, and in both instances eBay responded with an automated message claiming “If you reported content that isnt listed below, well send a separate email once weve made a decision.
Your reference ID: [REDACTED]
Here are the listings you reported that are included in this decision: Item:197794861254 Sealed BIC Classic Standard Regular Sized Lighter Assorted Colors 50 Count Pack”
Ebay is knowingly allowing pirated and unsafe products to be sold on its platform, even after 2 complaint submissions and 3 phone calls to report this issue. They expected the buyer, me, to ship the unsafe items back to the seller without regard for the leaking fuel. After many hours of back and forth on the phone with eBay customer service, they simply ignored the complaint and chose to follow their internal policy rather than prioritize and escalate this problem up to a higher level. They knowingly, even after many reports, refused to take immediate action. They even requested I go to the USPS and get some type of documentation explaining why the fake Bic lighters could not be shipped back to the seller. I told them the documentation is clearly posted on the wall of every post office as “FEDERAL LAW”. Ebay has a serious issue with the items it is allowed to be sold on its platform that pose a public safety risk. They appear to not be concerned that fake products are being sold on their platform OR that unsafe products are allowed to be sold, shipped, and asking the buyer to resend the unsafe items via USPS. This needs to be investigated.
