No one hurt Made May 26, 2015, sent to the company Jun 3, 2015, published by CPSC Jun 17, 2015
The product, in the report: Revlon Ceramic/Tourmaline/Ionic/1875W 125VAC 60 Hz purple hair dryer. Helen of Troy Model No. RVDR5141 Type: RD5141BS Intertek 4006802
Hair dryer temperature would change intermittently by itself. Temperature got so hot it burned my hair when using a round metal brush. A spark approximately 6 to 8 inches long came out of the bottom of the hair dryer where the cord runs into the dryer, making a very loud noise and tripping the breaker. (We have pictures of the defective cord, the internal wires are showing)

I purchased a Revlon Helen of Troy ionic/tourmaline/ceramic 1875 hair dryer months ago and while I was using it this morning, it began to shoot several sparks out of the bottom towards my inner wrist burning it. Thankfully, my husband heard my screams of panic and ran in to unplug it.

The product, in the report: Revlon ionic/ tourmaline/ceramic hair dryer. Silver color with black accents
While using Revlon ( ionic/ tourmaline/ ceramic) hair dryer, model RV544, the dryer stopped working then came back on and then a spark shot out the bottom of the handle where the cord goes into the dryer. I was not burned or shocked luckily, but this is very unsafe. The hair dryer is about a year old. It has not been dropped, and it just sits on the counter top when not in use, so no stress or damaged has ever occurred to the cord.

The product, in the report: Revlon Ionic/Tourmaline/Ceramic Hair Dryer. 1875W
Had this hair dryer for 6 months. Was using and when I moved the dryer around it would stop and start. A short it the cord. It sparked and smoked. I swear I think I even saw a little flame. I had this same model hair dryer right before this one which lasted probably a year. It also had a short in the cord. I thought it was because I would wrap the cord after I was finished. I never wrapped the cord on this one ever.

The product, in the report: Revlon White ceramic ionic hair dryer
Bought this hair dryer beginning of 2014 and about 6 months ago it stopped and then it started sparking at the end of the hairdryer handle where the cord comes out. It totally freaked me out. Well I filed a complaint via Email to Revlon (Helen Of Troy) on August 4,14. They replied via email (August 12, 14 and was they would send me a new one. Well 3 days ago this new one is acting weird making weird sounds like it is gonna go out. I am still using it because I haven’t gone to get a new one yet (nearest Wal-Mart is 40 mins away) I am scared ever time I use it cause I’m afraid of what it may do! The first time was frightening enough!! These hair dryers are a safety hazzard to the users. I Suggested if you have one throw it away and get a new one!!

The product, in the report: Revlon 1875 ionic ceramic Hair Dryer
I was drying my hair this am and I heard a pop didn’t know what it was and all of a sudden Sparks and smoke started coming out of the hair dryer. I tried to turn it off and it would stop it almost caught my top on fire before I could get it un plugged . I am glad that I could unplug it before it electrocuted me. Why didn’t the plug in breaker stop the power when it shorted out? Why did I have to unplug it before it would stop? If I would have been wet, what could have happened to me. I have the hair dryer

The product, in the report: Hair Dryer, Revlon Retractable Cord, Model RVDR5018 type RD5018BL 125 VAC 60 HZ 1875 W Helen of Troy. Color is black.
I wanted to report a safety problem with a hair dryer, Revlon Retractable Cord, Model RVDR5018 type RD5018BL 125 VAC 60 HZ 1875 W Helen of Troy. The hair dryer is about 5 years old. While I was drying my hair, it started to make a hot/burning smell (like burned hair or plastic) and then as I was finishing, it shot out sparks/flames a couple of inches out of the end where the hot air usually blows. This may have occurred as I was turning the dryer off or immediately prior to me turning it off. Fortunately, I was not holding it close to my hair when this happened. Had I been holding it close to my hair/face, my hair could have caught fire and I could have been burned.

The product, in the report: Revlon 1875 watt Ionic Hair Dryer, in hot pink. There are other colors as well.
I was drying my hair with this hair dryer when I heard a spark. I noticed a small flame and smoke coming out of the on/off switch. I immediately put it down and the smoke continued. After the smoking stopped I unplugged it from the wall socket. I purchased this dryer in late 2013, and I did some research into this matter on complaint websites and found other complaints about Revlon hairdryers sparking and smoking as well. I did file a complaint today with Revlon, 1/24/2015, and this product is still being sold in stores. Since this is a well known complaint and a safety issue, why are they still on shelves?

The product, in the report: Revlon ceramic/tourmaline/iconic/1875 w purple blow dryer
About week ago the blow dryer started blowing cool air when on a hot setting. Then as I moved the dryer around it would stop and start again. I noticed it had to do with the cord movement. Then one day I turned it on and it sparked and I noticed that the wire had been exposed near where the cord connects to the blow dryer.

The product, in the report: A Revlon hair dryer model 1875
My wife purchased this hair dryer approx one year prior to incident. Hair dryer is cleaned of lint and hair daily while it was in use. On 1/6/2015 my wife was using hair dryer when it sounded like it was losing power, when she lowered the hair dryer to see what was wrong it produced a shower of sparks/fire from tip of hair dryer that would normally be pointed at a users hair or face. We are blessed that this did not seriously injure my wife. Someone needs to look into this before someone is seriously injured or disfigured by this product.

I was using my Revlon 1875 Ionic Ceramic Hair Dryer this morning and in the middle of drying my hair it suddenly stopped. I flipped the switch to the off / low positions and all of a sudden there was a pop and it caught fire at the junction where the cord goes into the hair dryer. It also caught my cotton shower wrap on fire, which I was wearing. I immediately unplugged the hair dryer threw it in the sink grabbed my wet washcloth and put out the flames on my shower wrap, took that off and threw it in the sink and doused all with water. This was a. very dangerous situation and I could have been seriously injured. I googled it and found other reports on line.

I used my Revlon 1875 Hair Dryer this morning. I turned it off and set it down. When I did, it turned itself back on (making a weird noise). I picked it up to see why and the handle sparked, smoked and caught on fire internally. I unplugged it and it died out on it’s own. Thankfully I wasn’t using it on my hair at the time or I might have really gotten hurt.

The product, in the report: Revlon Ionic / Ceramic / 1875W Hair Dryer Model RV484
The incident involves a Revlon RV484 Hair Dryer. The hair Dryer was bought new approx one year ago and has been used daily since it was purchased. On the incident date, when my wife was using the hair dryer, it began to vary in speed and power by itself, then began cycling off and on during use, until the unit failed completely. I took a look at the hair dryer and could see that the wire insulation looked like it was failing where it enters the strain relief on the hair dryer handle. I took apart the hair dryer and tested the components with a multimeter. I isolated the failure as an intermittent break in the copper wiring under the insulation. By twisting the cord while connected to the meter, I could make or break continuity. The insulation, which appears to be a rubber-like material, at the point of failure appeared deteriorated. The remainder of the wire insulation (the complete six feet from the integrated GFCI to where the cord enters the hair dryer) just didn’t look right either. It wasn’t as deteriorated as the insulation at the point of the wire failure, but it appears to look like the early stages of deterioration. Thinking that this hair dryer power cord failure was just a fluke, I went onto amazon.com to read reviews about this particular hair dryer to see if others had experienced this failure. I found that mine was NOT an isolated incident. Others have had the same issue with the power cord, including smoking and sparking, from the wire insulation failing where the cord enter the handle of the hair dryer.

The product, in the report: Silver & Burgundy Revlon 1875 Tourmaline Ionic Blow Dryer
I was using my 4 month old Revlon 1875 Ionic Ceramic blow dryer this morning and thought I felt the handle getting a little warm. I unplugged it and checked with my husband, who said it was a little warm - but nothing to worry about. I plugged the dryer back in and ran it for a few more minutes until it started burning my hand. I attempted to shut it off but the button would not go down - I had to shove it down with all my might to get the dryer to turn off and pulled it out of the wall. I tried to plug it back in to see if the button was melted down and the button will not budge. Thankfully not nearly as bad as the other incidents on here (fires, blow ups), but still quite frightening. Not sure I’ll be purchasing anything other than makeup from this company ever again. :( Given the number of other incident reports, it may be helpful for the manufacturer to discontinue, recall, or solve the problem rather than excusing themselves from the problem. Just because Revlon licenses their name to Helen of Troy does not excuse them - their brand name is still on the product and it’s their name/brand being tarnished.

The product, in the report: Revlon Tourmaline Ionic Ceramic hair dryer Model No RV544
I was using the hair dryer as I got ready for work, and it suddenly stopped. After examining the plug and the dryer, I realized that one of the two electrical “wires” coming out of the housing had completely severed from the housing. It was joined to the other “wire” by plastic/rubber housing, but the severed wires were exposed. This seemed like a shock hazard as the dryer was still plugged in to the outlet. I did not receive a shock or any injury. The hair dryer was rendered unusable by this malfunction.
I had owned it approximately 2-3 years, was the sole user, and did not excessively bend the cord during use or storage.

I have a Revlon 1875 ionic ceramic hair dryer and today, while I was trying to dry my hair, it short circuited. First it shut itself off. I thought this was odd. I doubled checked the settings on the dryer and it was still on high/hot. So I pressed the reset button on the wall switch and also the reset on the dryer. The dryer started again and then stopped. So I pressed all the resets again and then the cord sparked at the point where it meets at the base of the dryer. It singed my left wrist. And I see a hole in the cord and I can see exposed wires. I think I would have had a fire if it wasn’t for the wall switch which shut off the electricity. This is the only time I had any problems with this dryer. I can say that I was happy with the dryer up to this point. I goggled Revlon and I read that they are notorious for ignoring similar complaints. I am now weary of all Revlon products. I do not plan to buy any Revlon again.

I have a Revlon Ionic Ceramic 1875W Model # RV484 that I bought less than a year ago from Ulta. I was blow drying my daughters hair, then the hair dryer sounded like it was slowing down. I then looked at the settings and it was turned on high, I then looked at the outlet to make sure it was completely plugged in. At that time the part where the cord is connected to the hair dryer started to spark and make loud popping noises. I was immediately able to unplug the dryer. My wrist was tingly for just a few minutes where I assume the spark had hit my wrist with no apparent burns or injuries. This could have been extremely bad if I had not unplug it immediately. There are no signs of damage to the hairdryer before or after. I will no longer be using this product, it is very hazardous.

My Revlon RV544 Tourmaline Ionic hair dryer starting turning on an off by itself last week. I cleaned the lint filter as the safety tag suggested but this did not resolve the problem. Today as I was drying my hair a big spark/fire emitted from the base of the handle. I immediately unplugged the dryer. Had I been holding the dryer closer to my head, I could have easily been burned. There is now a hole in the cord where the cord meets the handle of the dryer. The cord was not twisted or damaged before this. I have never wrapped the cord of this dryer. I use it only in my bedroom (not in the bathroom) and store it in its own drawer. I have had this dryer for a little over a year. My hair is thin and takes no more than 5 minutes to dry. My 13 year old daughter was blow drying her hair this morning and the hair dryer began to smoke. She turned off the hair dryer but it turned back on by itself. The house smelled heavily of burnt rubber. Later this evening, I decided to check the hair dryer again because it was less than two (2) years old and I didn’t think there could be anything wrong with it. I assumed the smoke and burning smell were the result of lint gathering on the rear filter. I plugged in the hair dryer and it immediately began to blow smoke out of the end of it. I turned the dryer off but it continued to run. My wife and kids saw a flame in the body of the dryer and I immediately unplugged it. The dryer continued to smoke for nearly one (1) minute and the handle was extremely hot to the touch. I’m concerning this particular model of hair dryer may be a fire/safety hazard.

The last dryer I had lasted me over 5 years and the only reason I got rid of it was because I wanted to upgrade. I am disappointed with this product and I don’t think I will buy this brand or anything else manufactured by Helen of Troy again.

The product, in the report: Revlon 1875 Pro Stylist Ionic Ceramic hair dryer
Plugged hair dryer into the GFCI-protected wall outlet. Turned it on. Loud “pop” and sparks shot out from bottom of handle where cord enters. GFCI built into the power plug tripped (not the GFCI for the wall outlet). Immediately unplugged the dryer. I tried it again (carefully) after resetting the GFCI in the plug. GFCI is good (test button works) but dryer doesn’t turn on. We purchased a replacement later that day, same model since up until now it had worked fine.

Sparks flew out of the dryer while using it. The sparks projected at least 3 feet. Thankfully it was not aimed at my face. This has happened before with another one of the same hair dryer over a year ago. I thought it was a fluke and I actually bought another one of the same model due to low price (silly me). After each incident the dryer no longer functions (doesn’t get hot enough to dry hair, and I wouldn’t want to use it anyway).

While using the Revlon RV484 Ion hair dryer I would notice pops and then a spark would shoot out the end of the blower. This happens when the Ion switch is both on and off and also when it is at set on all the different temperatures. I am now fearful to use my hairdryer as the sparks could potentially set my hair on fire or worse. This hair dryer has been used for less than 6 months. My previous dryer lasted 15 years. This new dryer is horrible quality and a safety hazard.

I was using my Revlon 1875 hairdryer this morning. I noticed it wasn’t blowing very hot on the low fan speed. When I turned it up to the higher speed, an explosion occured in the handle - and a flame and smoke shot out it - and the dryer turned off.
I immediately unplugged the device - but I have to say it was extremely scary because the flame that discharged from the handle was very close to my hair and face. My teenage daughter has the same model of hairdryer, so I am concerned that this is a dangerous product.

On the morning of 7/03/2012 approximately 0750, while using my hair dryer (hand held) identified as a REVLON Ionic, Ceramic 1875 Watts Model RV484, I was startled by an explosion, I saw a bright flash of light and black smoke and smelled what to me as burning rubber. The explosion took place near my left arm where I was holding the hair dryer and immediately felt sharp pain on the underside of my arm. I noticed black dots along the underside of my arm which is where the sharp pain was coming from. I also noticed that the hair on my arm was burned off as well. The electrical cord disintegrated at the point where the cord enters the hair dryer. The cord melted as a result of the electrical short and fully came off.

The product, in the report: Revlon 1875 Ionic Ceramic blow dryer, silver & maroon, manufactured by Helen of Troy, their model # RV484.
I purchased a Revlon 1875 Ionic Ceramic blow dryer approximately 1 1/2 years ago. For the last couple of months it stops working when I’m using it and if I move it around it starts working again, like there is a problem with the cord. Also when I change the setting from hot to warm it smells funny. Yesterday I was in the store with my sister, who also owns this exact dryer (purchased around the same time), and she tells me there is something wrong with her blow dryer. In her word “it’s possessed”. She then described the exact same problem I’m having. I decided to call Revlon and when I [REDACTED] the blow dryer model I found product reviews for this blow dryer, dating back to 2007, where people tell stories similar to mine, many have worse stories where this blow dryer catches fire, burns their hand and/or hair. Many people have the blow dryer for only days or months. I know that mine is 1 1/2 yrs old but that’s not really old for a blow dryer. My last one was a Conair & I had it for years. With all the problems this blow dryer causes it makes me wonder why it is still on the market and hasn’t been recalled.
I called Revlon, who directed me to call Helen of Troy because they manufacture Revlon’s small appliances. When I called Helen of Troy I was instructed to send the blow dryer back with $5 because it was out of the six month warranty, and they would send a replacement. When I complained that it’s not reasonable to be without a blow dryer for a minimum of 2 weeks and I have to pay to ship it back to them, plus the $5 fee when I could go out and buy a new one for $20 they said they would waive the $5 fee, send me a replacement & when I get it send the defective one back so they can test it. Quite frankly I’m a little afraid to use this dryer until I get the replacement.

At about 8PM, my 12 year old daughter was using the Revolon 1985 hair dryer in the upstairs bathroom. She had the setting on “high.” It stopped working. She held out the dryer to see if she’d accidently switched it off. She had not. Sparks flew out, then flames. She screamed, “FIRE FIRE FIRE” and dropped the dryer into the sink, then unplugged it. The safety plug on the hair dryer had not triggered. Fortunately, she did not get burnt. The bathroom floor has burn marks from flying embers. I called Revlon this morning. They said that the hair dryers are through “Helen of Troy” and they would forward the information to them and have them contact me. Helen of Try did contact me. They want photos of the damage emailed to them. They are sending me a label so I can send them the hair dryer for them to examine. They are sending me a new hair dryer as well.

Revlon Travel Styler Worldwide Dual Voltage Hair Dryer model RV417
My mother was using the hair dryer when it caught fire. Luckily she was not injured, but her hair and scalp could have easily been burned if she didn’t unplug the dryer.
It appears that if fan stops blowing for any reason, the heating elements remain on, which causes them to overheat and ignite the hair dryer.
The hair dryer should have a safety that only powers the heating elements if the fan is operating.

While drying her hair the user noticed the dryer was stopping and starting for no apparent reason. She thought it had overheated. She returned to using it. The cord sparked at the base of the rubber fitting at the bottom of the handle. The cord loosely passes through this fitting and the fitting is not molded to relieve strain on the cord.
Inspection of the cord showed that the insulation had ruptured and the conductor inside was severed, allowing electricity to flow if the cord was in a particular position but opening the circuit in a hazardous manner as the cord is moved.
It appears that the rubber fitting is supposed to be a substitute for a molded strain relief, however it is not properly engineered for daily use.

My Revlon 1875 Ion Select hairdryer was purchased on 15 May 2010. One morning shortly after purchase, there seemed to be something wrong with the on/off switch when the hair dryer was switched on, then there was a spark and the hair dryer became very hot. The lights also dimmed in the house! It was very scary. I unplugged the hair dryer and placed it in a safe place to cool. After contacting the manufacturer, they had me ship it to them and they fixed the hair dryer in July 2010. It has been doing well until recently when it would automatically go to the cool air setting then return to the hot air setting. Turns out it is sparking again and that is when it triggers the cool air setting to blow cool air until the hair dryer cools down. As soon as I realized what was happening, I stopped using the blow dryer.

The handle for holding the hair dryer gets very hot using it on the Warm High setting, and quickly becomes too hot to touch. It’s hottest at the part where my pointer finger holds the handle, right over the seam joining the purple and silver parts of the dryer. I purchased the hair dryer at Bed Bath and Beyond within the past several months so it is not an old hair dryer. The hair dryer started becoming hot like this within the past few weeks and started with the hot-to-the-touch taking longer to build up than occurred the past two day, at which time, it became too hot to hold within 5 minutes. The product, in the report: Hand held hair dryer, silver and black, 2 speed, 2 heat settings.
I have been using a Revlon 1875 hair dryer for about a year. A few months ago I noticed my hair had a dry, brittle texture and thought it was either damage caused by my curling iron, or was due to changes brought on by menopause. Now I can put it all together. This morning, as soon as I started drying my hair, my hair dryer overheated, sparks came from within the barrel, and my hair smoked, burned and came out in the brush. I immediately stopped using the dryer. It did not pop the circuit breaker built into the plug, nor did it pop the Ground fault circuit in the bathroom. I have kept the unit for inspection if needed, and have kept some of the hair I lost. Using an infrared thermometer gun, my husband was able to measure the heat at 305 degrees.
