The product, in the report: Anatex Enterprises Inc, “Deluxe Mini Playcube” which is approximately 1 foot high wooden box with attachments on the side/top. The SKU number is 099039090144.
This incident relates to the Anatex “Deluxe Mini Playcube”, which is a wooden cube that has five panels with various games to assist with the motor skills of toddlers and young children. My son (who is almost 14 months old) received this as a birthday gift and was sitting on the floor playing with the cube.
The cube comes assembled with the exception of one panel that must be attached with four screws. Otherwise, the cube is fully assembled.
We had the cube for less than two weeks when the incident occurred. My son was playing with the “wonder gears” which is located on the side of the cube, and has six interlocking gears. If you push one gear, the others move in synchronicity. The gears are attached to the cube with individual screws, and have a plastic screw in the middle which covers the metal component. Again, this came assembled and there was no instruction to tell parents that they need to assemble these particular parts.
My son had pulled on one of the gears and was able to dislodge the screw component. When I looked down he had already placed the plastic screw component (roughly one inch in size) into his mouth. I was able to pry open his mouth and dislodge the component before he ingested it. However, I have no doubt that without my supervision he would have choked on the part.
The cube is a comprised of beads, screws and small blocks, in total well over 100 small parts. The lack of solid construction on the component parts could lead to choking very easily. As the cube was purchased on Amazon, I saw several other postings where people complained about the same lack of construction and fear that it is a choking hazard.
The box indicates that the toy is for age 2 and up, and has a small warning lable indicating that the UNASSEMBLED parts could lead to a potential choking issue if not assembled correctly.
While my son is a few months short of two years of age, this hazard exists with ASSEMBLED parts and I have no doubt that a two year old could potentially suffer the same fate. Again, this toy was less than two weeks old, barely used and for my twenty three pound son to have the strength to pull off the assembled component parts means that this has shoddy construction.
Please protect other consumers from what I almost experienced with my son.
