Death Made Sep 15, 2023, sent to the company Sep 29, 2023, published by CPSC Oct 16, 2023
The product, in the report: The product is a blue baby structured carrier designed to be worn around the torso with the infant facing the person wearing it. “EBC201810124VN” is listed on one of the tags for the carrier, but it is uncertain whether this is a serial number or UPC code.
Per police reports, on September 26, 2021, about 1000-1015 hours, the baby was given to his father and placed in an Ergo baby carrier. The baby was positioned facing his father. The father reportedly took the baby and their dog for a walk around the neighborhood. The baby’s head, arms, legs, and feet were exposed. At some point, the head cover was placed over the infant’s head. The father returned home between 1045-1100 hours and prepared to go out for the afternoon. He kept the baby in the carrier with him. At about 1200 hours, the father and mother left the home to take the baby and their sibling to the park. As the father went to remove the baby from the carrier, he noticed the baby was not moving. He took the baby to the mother who also observed the baby did not look right. When the parents tried to wake the baby up, they noticed blood coming from his nose. The mother called 911 and initiated CPR. EMS arrived on the scene and continued life-saving efforts. The baby was transported to Children’s hospital for advance care but despite all efforts, the decedent was pronounced dead at 1300 hours.

Death Made Jun 18, 2019, sent to the company Jul 11, 2019, published by CPSC Sep 25, 2019
The product, in the report: Ergobaby carrier worn on the front of the adult carrying the child.
A child died while being carried in an Ergo Baby carrier. The infant was being carried in a forward facing position. The infant weighed just over 8 pounds. While not listed as the cause of death, improper use of the carrier could not be excluded as a contributing factor. The infant carrier in this situation did not come with an insert and the instructions stated an insert was not needed for a child weighing over 7 lbs, so it was being used correctly. In some Ergo Baby carriers, and insert is provided and is advised to be used for children weighing between 7-12 pounds. I can’t help but wonder if an insert had been used with deceased baby, if the baby would have lived.
