The product, in the report: 4 in 1 crib
I own a day care. Last year I bought a full-size crib to use in my day care. Our licensing rules state the crib must be full-size if children are sleeping over night. I bought a standard crib mattress. I thought it was okay to use the crib. Until I was inspected. Luckily I didn’t have any children currently using it or I would have been in violation. The state worker showed me that if the mattress were to shift there would be over an inch gap in areas. We measured the opening of the crib where the mattress would fit. It measures 53 x 28 1/2 inches. I called the crib manufacturer. They wanted me to send them photos. I sent them several photo’s showing the gaps where an infant could get trapped. They also said that this crib was manufactured to to be 53 x 28 1/2 opening. When the licensing consultant shifted the mattress there was over an inch gap almost 2 inches in areas. Mattresses are suppose to be tight fitting. The manufacturer told me to buy another mattress to see if that helped. However, you probably know they don’t make them bigger. I took the mattress I had over to my daughter’s house. My mattress fit her crib with no issues. It was tight fitting. I’ve made several email communications to the crib manufacturer and they haven’t responded.
Below is a document from the State of Michigan Childcare licensing: R 400.1916 Bedding and sleeping equipment.
(5) Infants, birth to 12 months of age, shall rest or sleep alone in an approved crib or porta-crib. A crib shall have all of the following: (a) A firm, tight-fitting mattress. Technical Assistance
Any rectangular shaped portable crib labeled by the manufacturer as a portable crib is acceptable if it complies with subrules (5)(a-f) of this rule.
Note: Under the federal crib standards, non-full-size baby cribs must be sold with the mattress. The mattress, when inserted in the center of the crib, must not leave a gap of more than 1/2 inch at any point between the perimeter of the mattress and the perimeter of the crib. When the mattress is placed flush to one side and end of the crib, the resulting gap must not exceed 1 inch. These measurements must be taken with no sheet covering the mattress. If the non-full-size crib mattress was sold with the crib and meets these requirements, it will be in compliance with subrule (5)(a) of this rule.
Note: Under the federal crib standards, full-size baby crib mattresses
must measure 27 1/4 inches by 51 5/8 inches with a thickness not
exceeding 6 inches.
