At approximately 9:30 pm I checked on my 14-month-old son, who had been in his Sorelle Verona crib for two-and-a-half hours. He was sleeping on his back at an odd angle with his left leg dangling through the slats. His leg was pushed through past his knee and bent at a 90 degree angle. Not wanting him to injure himself by attempting to re-situate himself, I tried to lift his leg out for him. My son would not budge (please note that I did not pull very hard - didn’t want to wake him). He woke up at this point and began screaming. After carefully trying to manipulate his knee and leg back through the slats for a few minutes, I cut off his pajama pants. At this point I found his knee was incredibly swollen from the pressure of the slats. I briefly tried icing it to bring down some swelling, but that did not help. He was still screaming in pain and frustration. While inspecting his knee, it appeared its bones and structure were a bit wider than the slats themselves. I’m not sure how he managed to get it through in the first place. At this point, there was no choice left other than to dismantle the crib. I used a hand saw to remove one of the offending slats to free my son. He limped at first, but after a few minutes that was gone. The swelling was almost gone the next morning and completely gone by the afternoon. Aside from bruising on both sides of his knee, there does not appear to be any permanent damage. Fortunately I discovered his leg was stuck before he woke up the next morning, energetic and ready to go, and decided to extricate himself. There is no telling what kind of damage he could have done to his knee, leg, and even his back if he had been left to his own devices.
