The product, in the report: Convertible Crib

The consumer says that her grandchild can get his legs and his knee between the slats . This causes his leg to get completely stuck. She says that they have to put butter on his leg and the slats to slide his leg out but even that still hurts him. She says the child weighs 22 lbs and is 16 months old.

The consumer contacted the manufacturer who advised to turn the crib into a toddler bed. The consumer says that he is not a toddler yet and should be in the crib. The manufacturer

The product, in the report: Europa Baby Palisades Crib Natural Cherry.

I bought a new crib for our baby expected in May 2012. We purchased the EUROPA BABY PALISADES CRIB. After purchasing a standard crib mattress (Serta Perfect Dream) and placing it in the crib, my 20 month old daughter wanted to “play night night” in her baby brother’s crib. I let her sit (supervised) in the new crib for a few minutes, and when she stood up, her entire leg slipped between the mattress and the rail of the crib. After ensuring the crib was properly installed, we started taking measurements. The crib measures (from inside of rail to inside of rail) 28 1/2”. This is supposedly within federal safety guidelines (28” +/- 5/8”). Our mattress measures 27 1/4”, also within federal safety guidelines (28” +/- 3/4”). The crib/mattress combo did not pass the two finger test. I was easily able to slip 2 fingers between the mattress and the rail. In fact, I could slip my whole arm down there without much effort. I set out looking for a larger mattress, but the largest available is 27 1/2”, which is still not wide enough to fit this crib. I called the crib maker to see if they had any suggestions, but all they kept telling me was “the crib meets federal safety guidelines.” I understand the measurements are within the guidelines, but if a toddler’s leg can slip between the mattress and the rail, then the measurements do not seem safe. I looked up reviews for this crib online, and I am not the only one with this issue. Apparently MANY MANY people are unable to find a crib mattress that fits snugly enough. I even found the crib set up on display at Babies R Us, and it did not have a properly fitting mattress either. The only suggestion anyone could give me was to place an extra bumper between the crib and the mattress. Well, bumpers are not recommended either! Frustrated!

The product, in the report: Europa Baby Geneva crib, white, purchased from walmart.com on 7/3/11.

My safety concern is with a new crib that I purchased on Sunday, July 3, 2011. My understanding was that all cribs for sale in the US were to be updated to meet the new standards by this date. I purchased the Europa Baby Geneva crib in white from walmart.com on the date above. When I received the crib, the manufacture date on the seal read October 2010. I was extremely disappointed in this, as I doubt that this crib meets the standards set in December 2010. I purposely put off my crib purchase until after the June 28th date in order to purchase a safer product for my son. In addition, while I was researching cribs in order to make this decision, I found that crib manufacturers were not willing to answer my questions about their products and how they comply to your standards. I feel that I was shipped a crib from their stock that could not be sold before your June 28th deadline, which would be an illegal action. I suggest that an investigation into these practices, by Wal-Mart or Europa Baby/LaJobi is in order, as well as other crib sellers or manufacturers. It seems likely that these companies are trying to get rid of the products they have on hand that are now illegal to sell. They are depending on consumers not being educated about these regulations and failing to notice the discrepancy in their dates. I do fear that my child’s is less safe in the crib that we purchased than in a crib meeting the new standards.
