The product, in the report: Berkley Crib and Changer by Sorelle, White
Almost a year ago when my daughter was four months old I purchased the “Berkley crib and changer by Sorelle” crib. I followed all assembly instructions and was satisfied with my purchase until now. I put my daughter down for a nap, she usually fusses for a few minutes and then puts herself to sleep. I could hear her quiet down and assumed she was beginning her nap time ritual of making herself comfortable by cuddling with her blanket or teddy bear. Instead she started screaming crying, not the usual whining cry, but she sounded like she was in pain. When I opened the door I saw her throwing her body weight away from the changer side of the crib. Because this is a combo crib there is a slot between the changer top and storage area and my daughter had reached her arm through and gotten stuck. As she is only one year old, she attempted to get it back by bending her arm, only further wedging it in. By pushing herself away from it she was actually further wedging her arm in. She was screaming in pain and fear and was crying tears of pain. I was able to remove her arm by picking her up with one arm and making it so her arm was level with the opening while using my other arm to pull her arm straight and then carefully I pulled her arm out. It had swollen from being wedged and at one point I feared I would have to either lubricate her arm somehow to slide it out or break the crib. While the extraction only took a minute she suffered bruising all over her upper arm and right below her elbow. She was terrified as was I and she is lucky that she didn’t break her arm or dislocate her shoulder or elbow. Crib slats must be a certain distance apart to keep children safe, but this slat was not the same width and obviously is not safe. I immediately disassembled the crib and returned it to the Babies R Us from which it was purchased. I was in tears as I described the horrifying situation, they said they would not recommend the crib to any person who took interest in buying it and attempted to remove the floor model but were told by corporate that they had to leave it out. I given a full refund and offered a compensatory 20% off a new crib, but declined because the majority of the selection there was the same brand. I will never in my life buy a piece of Sorelle furniture and especially not a crib. I will warn any friend who has children who use a crib to avoid the brand. My entire day was ruined and instead of going to a birthday party we spent the day in tears disassembling the unsafe crib and removing it and purchasing and assembling a new crib. It was a horrific experience as a mother and I can say that it ended in a best case scenario compared to how bad it could have been. Luckily I have the resources and ability to replace the crib, but for families who don’t have that luxury it would be terrifying to have to trust leaving your child alone in a crib like that.
