First aid Made Nov 13, 2013, sent to the company Nov 21, 2013, published by CPSC Dec 6, 2013
The product, in the report: Baby Cache Montana crib
My 9 month old was trying To go to sleep in her Baby Cache Montana crib. There was no bumper in the crib and nothing else other than a blanket and binky. All of a sudden I heard her start screaming on the monitor. I went into the room and her entire leg-up to her thigh was stuck between the two slats in the center of the crib. It took my husband and I to pry her leg out. Luckily there was just a bruise and nothing was broken. I just find it appalling that someone would have tested this for safety and a tiny baby could have so easily got her leg stuck.

No one hurt Made Sep 11, 2013, sent to the company Sep 23, 2013, published by CPSC Oct 23, 2013
The product, in the report: Baby Cache Chantal Linen White Crib, Model # 3900-LN, production date Sep-26, 2012 Baby Cache Chantal 6 Dresser, Linen White, Model # 3906-LN, production date Oct-12, 2012
We received a Baby Cache Chantal White Linen crib and matching dresser as baby shower gifts, and picked up the items from Babies R Us in December 2012 and January 2013, respectively. On assembly, both items had an overpowering chemical odor. Thinking this was normal for new furniture, we left them in a garage to air out until March 2013, when we moved them into our house. The odor was still present, and was strong enough to make our eyes water and cause us to cough. We moved them back into the garage.
A friend mentioned than some furniture is made with particleboard that contains formaldehyde, so we ordered a formaldehyde vapor test kit. We assembled the products again, and set up the test kit in the crib, with the door to the room closed, as it would be if our daughter were sleeping. The formaldhyde concentration in the air above the crib was 0.051 ppm, half of the EPA maximum recommended exposure level of 0.1 ppm. We received the test results around 6/21/2013.
We had previously contacted the company about a warranty return (4/25/2013), but since we did not purchase the item, and the person who did had lost the receipt, we were told the warranty would not apply. We are attempting to return the product through Babies R Us. The products are still in our garage; we retested them 8/26 (to be sure the first test was valid) after being in the garage since the last test; the latest result was 0.049 ppm.
This product is marketed as having a “non-toxic” finish, but the underlying material is obviously not. It is outrageous to us that a product intended for infants, who would spend at least 6-8 hours a day in it, would have such a high level of formaldehyde! Given the known toxicity of formaldhyde, any exposure to an infant is unacceptable.

Emergency room Made Aug 7, 2013, sent to the company Aug 15, 2013, published by CPSC Aug 29, 2013
The product, in the report: Baby Cache’ crib. Uptown model # 5500-natural
We purchased a Baby Cache crib-uptown style, natural color in the winter of 2012. In May 2013, my almost 16 month old daughter broke her tibia bone in her left leg as a result of it getting stuck between the side rails. The rails go from wide to very narrow as you get to the bottom. We assume she got her leg in the top of the rail where it could fit in and she pushed her leg down the railing and it got stuck in the narrow part. She was found face down on her stomach but her leg was still positioned in the railing as if she was on her back. She must of panicked and twisted and turned. As soon as she started screaming bloody murder, my husband knew it wasn’t just an ordinary wake up cry. He rushed up there and had trouble getting her leg out of the crib. He thought he was going to have to break the railing. He finally released it and we took her to the ER where an xray was done . She was in a cast for two weeks and has healed now. I’m making this report because through my research on line I have come across other complaints with this same issue. The crib is not safe and shouldn’t be sold. What if a younger baby got their leg stuck in the crib the way my daughter did and ended up on their stomach and suffocated because they couldn’t turn their head. This crib should be revised. thank you

The product, in the report: Baby Cache Uptown crib (Model #5500-NAT), constructed with American Hard Maple in the natural finish
My son was napping in his Baby Cache Uptown (model #5500-NAT) crib (mattress at the lowest setting) today and, upon hearing him screaming, I entered his room and found that his leg was stuck between two railings. After many attempts to free his leg, I called 911 and the fire department responded. It took 20 minutes and two firemen to finally free my son’s leg. He was checked out by the EMT and his upper knee and thigh are now swollen and bruised, and we are following up with his doctor tomorrow.

The product, in the report: Baby Cache, Taylor Lifetime crib model #1900R. All white, 57w x 31.2d x 45.75h. Purchased at Babies R Us in Orland Park, IL in 2010.
Taylor lifetime crib Model 1900R. Our 2 year old daughter sleeps in this crib. While standing in the middle of the crib against the side to get out the bottom snapped and collapsed. There is no spring to the bottom just a wooden frame without any give. As the unit collapsed my daughters chin hit the side and foot was wedge where the bottom snapped. Other than a bump on her chin she was fine as I was present when this happened. However, where the bottom snapped, it had split and splintered severely. Our daughters foot could have received lacerations or splinters if I did not carefully removed her foot.

First aid Made Oct 30, 2012, sent to the company Nov 16, 2012, published by CPSC Dec 10, 2012
The product, in the report: Baby Cache Uptown Lifetime Crib - Natural
The crib has a wedge-shaped (tapered) opening on both sides near the back of the crib. My 9-month-old son’s leg was trapped in this opening between the rear side slat and the back corner post when he put his foot through the wider opening near the top and then kicked downwards into the narrower part of the opening.
The back openings on the side panels, where my son’s leg was trapped by the way the opening narrows, is 2 inches wide at the top and tapers down to 1 1/8 inch wide before widening out again at the bottom.
My son’s ankle was bruised, and circulation was being cut off while his leg was trapped. It was impossible for my son to remove his leg from this tapered opening, and I had difficulty removing it from this tapered opening.
I contacted the manufacturer on 9/24/2012 and was told that the CPSC requires a wedge-shaped opening rather than a consistent opening, which is complete nonsense. The manufacturer then refused to take an injury report.
This is an unsafe design flaw which makes limb entrapments more likely and more serious. The CPSC should investigate, and the manufacturer should provide a free repair kit.

The product, in the report: Crib
The caller stated that her granchild leg gets entrapped between the crib slats. Whenever the one year old child arm or leg gets stuck, she has difficulty trying to remove it. She contacted the manufacturer and was informed that the crib was made according to regulations. The crib was manufactured in 2008. This incident has been occurring for the past month.
She has researched online and noticed that there are several complaints about the slats on the crib.
The caller feels that this is a safety hazard and should be investigated.

Emergency room Made Sep 6, 2012, sent to the company Oct 18, 2012, published by CPSC Nov 1, 2012
The product, in the report: Baby Cache Ntrl Uptown Crib
September 6th 2012 Dear [REDACTED],
On Friday August 17, 2012 my son got his foot stuck in his crib. My fiancé called me at work around 11am to tell me that his foot was stuck in between the railings of his crib. I left work to see if I could help him get his foot out. When I got home, [REDACTED] right foot was swollen and stuck in between the crib railings. The railing was the one closest to where the side and front meet on the right side of the crib. After trying several times and my son screaming in pain, we had no choice but to call 911. The fire department and ambulance came and had to cut the crib to get him out. Because of the way [REDACTED] foot was stuck, they could not just saw the wood in half. They said by sawing it in half it could break his foot, so they used hedge clipper like tools to chip away at the wood. When they got his foot free his foot was so swollen that he was taken by ambulance to the hospital to get it checked out. Thank God it was not broken. I can’t even describe the emotions that we all went through that day. One of the responders was [REDACTED]. His first comment to me was that this should never have happened. He asked how old the crib was. This crib was put on layaway on May 8, 2011 and was picked up in August of 2011. My baby is 11 months old. My parents purchased this crib for my son and paid approximately $500.00 On Tuesday August 21st, my mother made a call to Baby Cache. She spoke to [REDACTED] and told her what happened. [REDACTED] response was that this is a common thing. She said she could send her a net that could possible help prevent this from happening again. My mother told her the crib was no good beecause they had to cut it to get the baby out. Mom told her if this happens a lot then maybe there should be a recall on this product. [REDACTED] said it happens a lot with all cribs. Mom told her that this is totally unacceptable. Mom also told her that the manufacturer should be reimbursing her for the crib and also the Ambulance bill that I will receive in the tune of $ 500.00 to $600.00. [REDACTED] requested that we send her a copy of the receipt and pictures and could not promise that they will do anything about this situation but would pass the information along to the proper channel. We have not sent anything to her yet. I am waiting for my credit card company to send me a copy of that statement and the Ambulance Corps to send me the bill. [REDACTED] email address is [REDACTED] and her phone number is [REDACTED].
The next call my mother placed was to a [REDACTED] that works in your department [REDACTED]. He also made the same comment. This is a common thing that happens all the time. He looked to see if there was a recall on this crib, which there wasn’t. He said if he could ever help in the future to give him a call. With both parties making this same unacceptable comment, my mother called [REDACTED] again to get his opinion on this matter. When she told him the comments that came from both parties he said no. that this is not expectable and to call the attorney general’s office in which see did. Mom was given this number that no longer works [REDACTED]. She then called the same number as before that she got [REDACTED] and asked for someone in a higher position. That’s when she spoke to you. My son has to sleep in a pack and play since this has happened. One reason is that this has left me feeling very frighten about putting my child in any crib and because I cannot afford another one. This is supposed to be a federally inspected and approved crib. I feel that this crib should have never passed the inspection. I measured the distance of the spaces and the slots start off at different measurements. The one closest to the front is 1.5 inches wide and is that distance all the way down. The middle railings are 2 inches wide all the way down. The railing closest to the back of the crib is 2 inches on the top, 1.5 inches in the middle and 2 inches on the bottom. Also where the corners meet it’s a smaller space. That alone is obvious that any child can get its foot/leg stuck. If this is such a common issue, then I fear for the safety of our children and that this should be looked into at great lengths. I am still waiting for the bill from the Westerly Hospital and The Westerly Ambulance. Once I get these I will forward you a copy. Has far as the crib receipt goes, I have made numerous attempts as well as my mom, to get a copy of the purchase receipt for the crib from Babies R Us. We called the Waterford CT Store has well as Corporate. We were disconnected several times, spoken to rudely and no one can get this for us. I find this so hard to believe. “Where are their receipts in case they get audited”. It’s funny that my rewards still show up on line from a year and one month ago. Please follow up with my mother on this matter. I work full time and cannot always be as readily available as she can. [REDACTED]. Her email address is [REDACTED] (please cc me on any and all corresponds) [REDACTED].
Attached are photos of the crib and my on-line rewards information. Please see notes on both attachments. Sincerely, [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Crib Purchased from Baby’s R Us.
This crib has 4 dangerous areas on the sides - where the rail spaces get smaller as they get closer to the mattress. These spaces are the ones closes to front on each side and closest to the back on each side. My daughter who is 17 months has now had her arm stuck twice and leg stuck once - and I want to submit a concern on this dangerous product. When her arm got stuck, she was putting her arm out to grab her blanket from the floor and it got stuck. I had to go into her room and help stand her up and get her arm closer to the larger opening toward the top and she was freed. Her arm was very red and cleared up by the morning. When her leg got stuck it was VERY stuck. I had to yell for my husband to come into the room so I could lift her leg and her could lift her body all at the same time.

The product, in the report: Baby Cache Uptown Crib Model number - 5500 Natural PO number - 0001385 Production Date - 6/5/10 Dimensions (in inches): 32.5 x 55 x 48
There are four spots in the Baby Cache Uptown crib where my 15 month old son is repeatedly getting one foot (either left or right) stuck. Due to the sleigh shape of the crib, and when the mattress is in the lowest position, those spots are wider just below the level of the mattress and taper as they go up. When my son’s foot becomes wedged just above the ankle the only way to get it out is to have another adult lift up the mattress on the opposite side from where my son is stuck so I can, while supporting his weight with one arm, push his foot towards the floor where the space between slats is wider again. This has happened four times since January 2012. To date the only injury has been minor bruising, however, it is uncertain what injures may occur should this happen without another adult present to help remove him.

We bought Oxford Cherry convertible crib by Baby Cache in December 2010 and it was delivered in late January 2011. We found in May 2011 that one of the slates had a crack. We are very sure that this crack was not there when we assembled. This is a safety issue. I am requesting a thorough testing of this product and a recall if possible.
