The product, in the report: Graco Premium Foam Crib and Toddler Mattress in a Box GREENGUARD Gold Certified, Non-Toxic, Breathable, Removable Washable Water Resistant Outer Cover

Product: Infant/Toddler Foam Mattress Brand: Graco (manufactured by Stork Craft Manufacturing USA Inc) Purchased From: Amazon Date of Purchase: June 14, 2020 Issue: Beetles discovered sealed inside the mattress

Complaint Details I am filing this complaint out of serious concern for infant health and product safety.

While cleaning my daughters infant mattress, I discovered dead insects (one large beetle and two smaller ones) sealed inside the foam structure, beneath the non-removable outer fabric. This was not visible until I noticed irregular shapes under the cover and made a small incision to investigate. The insects were located deep inside the mattress, suggesting they were present during manufacturing or packaging.

This mattress was used for my infant daughter, and the idea that bugs were present within a sealed product is alarming. This poses a potential risk of contamination, allergens, and infestation in homes with vulnerable infants. As someone who previously experienced a bedbug infestation, I am also very concerned about the psychological and potential financial toll of this discovery.

I have photographic evidence and retained purchase details. I believe this may point to a larger issue with product quality control, and Im requesting the CPSC investigate whether this product meets federal safety and hygiene standards for infant sleep products.

  3. Seen by a doctor or nurse

Made Feb 19, 2017, sent to the company Mar 15, 2017, published by CPSC Mar 29, 2017

The product, in the report: Graco Deluxe Foam Crib and Toddler Mattress-in-a-Box. It is Ivory colored with a mesh cover, another cover, then the foam mattress. The mesh liner manufactured on April 2016 and the mattress 01/2015. The mesh liner model number is 02640-100-ST and the mattress is 06710-100

We ordered a Graco Foam Mattress off of Walmart.com and had it shipped to our local WalMart. We purchased the mattress on 6/22/2016. We put the mattress on the bed and put the sheet over it. My son was born on 7/72016. For the first few months he slept with us, then we started putting him on his mattress with the sheet. He spit up on the sheet so we removed the sheet and washed it. We just placed him on the mattress at this point. I started noticing these small, long, shiny, brittle fibers on his clothes and on my own. After about a week, I asked my husband if he noticed them and he said they were all over his and my daughters clothes. I googled what the fibers could be and it popped up fiberglass from a baby mattress in the search.

I called the manufacturing company StorkCraft. They asked me what the model number and the date of manufacturing was. I told them April 2016. She asked if it was sold with a plastic cover and I responded no. She said, “Oh.” She then asked me to send them pictures of the matress and of the receipt. I went and looked at the mattress again and realized the mesh cover had a different tag than the mattress. I opened the mesh cover and the mattress manufacturing date of January 2015 with the model number that matches the model numbers of the recalled mattresses. At the time we were on the phone, I did not know it matched.

I asked to speak to someone about these fibers and how to get them off of everything. They’re on my households’ clothes, my carpet, my couches, my washer, and my dryer. She transferred me to [REDACTED] in Customer Service but it went to voicemail. I left her a message. I called back and asked when she would be available and the woman said maybe later today maybe tomorrow.

I then called Graco. The woman I spoke to asked me when I had talked to Storkcraft and I told her today but they sent me to voicemail. I told her it was terrible customer service. She called them and told me they would be in contact with me. She offered me a coupon. I asked her how they were allowing Storkcraft to sale a recalled product in their boxes? She told me they were not responsible, that the manufacturing company was. I told her that they, as a company, should ensure that the company they do business with isn’t putting a recalled product in their boxes. She gave me more excuses as to why they weren’t responsible because StorkCraft was a licensing company of theirs. I told her they should be making sure this isn’t happening to anymore of their consumers. She looked at the recall and the only thing she could tell me is why it was recalled and what they were doing to resolve the issue.

I spoke to [REDACTED] and she asked me to send photos and the receipt. She also asked me where it was manufactured and I told her where in China. She asked me when I noticed the fibers and I said about a week ago. I explained what they looked like and how they were everywhere and I couldn’t get them off and that they had spread to everything. She said she would have to contact the company in China. She asked me if I knew where they were coming from: the mesh liner or the mattesss. I said I wasn’t sure because if it was one or the other they’re poking out and easily spread so it is hard to determine where. I did tell her I took a clean, black sock and ran it over the mattress with the mesh cover and it was completely covered in the fibers. I specifically asked her to find out what they were and how to get them off of everything.

I received this email from StorkCraft:

    Dear [REDACTED],

Thank you for sending photos of your Graco Deluxe Foam Crib and Toddler Mattress-in-a-Box. They have been reviewed.

As per the technical department, it was not sure or confirmed where the fibers are coming from . It would be difficult identify what those fibers are and how to remove them. We sincerely apoloigize as we are unable to assist regarding the fibers .

For your concern regarding the recall, only those mattresses that were missing the mattress fire barrier (Models 06710-100 or 06710-200 and a manufactured date between August 2014 and January 2015) are affected. In those instances we only send this missing fire barrier cover.

We have gone ahead and submitted order [REDACTED] to send you a new mattress barrier cover for your mattress .

**Please keep this entire thread when responding**

Obviously, they have admitted to selling me a recalled mattress which is illegal under the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008. I do not believe that they have manufactured a mattress but they have no idea what they have put in it.

I collected all of the clothes in my house that were contaminated. When I had done this, my eyes began to itch and it felt like sand was under my eyelids. It took me an hour of flushing my eyes with saline solution to make them feel better. My son has been sick. He had an eye infection, a runny infected nose, and had difficulty breathing with fluid in his lungs. He has been sleeping with us ever since I discovered the fibers were coming from the mattress. The doctors have not confirmed yet whether it was from the mattress. I am making my son and I an appointment with an opthamologist on Monday. I will also be looking to send off these fibers to a lab to determine what they are.

I saw on WalMart.com a review a woman had written. She had bought the mattress for her Great Dane. When it got dirty, she washed the mesh liner and the other liner that covered the foam. She dried it on air only. When she opened the dryer, the liner exploded and fiberglass went all over her face and everything. She just threw it away.

I intend to email StorkCraft back and demand that they figure out what it is and how I get rid of them as well as reminding them that it was illegal to sale me the mattress to begin with.
