  1. No incident, no one hurt

Made Sep 2, 2022, sent to the company Sep 23, 2022, published by CPSC Oct 7, 2022

The product, in the report: The product is a baby hammock that attaches to a crib.

This is a report about a company promoting unsafe infant sleep with their product on their website which goes against the CPSC’s 2021 update to infant sleep guidelines. From AAP’s safe sleep guidelines 2022 update, “In June 2021, the CPSC passed a rule that any sleep products for infants aged 5 months and younger (defined as any product with packaging, marketing, or instructions indicating that the product is for sleep or naps, or with any images of sleeping infants) must meet the existing federal safety standards for cribs, bassinets, play yards, and bedside sleepers.38 This includes inclined sleep products, hammocks, cardboard boxes, in-bed sleepers, baby nests and pods, compact bassinets without a stand or legs, travel bassinets, and baby tents.”

The product, in the report: Crescent Womb is a baby sleep hammock designed to be strapped to the four corners of a conventional cot.

Crescent Womb are marketing a baby sleep hammock which does not adhere to AAP safe sleep guidelines. They claim that the product is the single “safest” option for infant sleep, but provide no evidence to support this claim. They even go as far as to imply that the product reduces the risk of Sudden Infant Death syndrome. According to their social media and their website the Crescent Womb is CSPC tested and approved for safe infant sleep. Based on my own research I have found evidence that hammocks are not recommended as safe for infant sleep due to the risk of positional asphyxiation, strangulation or falling from the device. Crescent Womb are also in their marketing encouraging parents to use the hammock for overnight unsupervised sleep, putting babies at even greater risk.

The product, in the report: Crescent Womb Sleep Hammock for infants. It is marketed as a safe sleep solution, however it goes against SIDS prevention guidelines and is a danger to children under the age of 1 year, particularly children under the age of 6 months. It is a suffocation risk. https://crescentwomb.com/

The product is called Crescent Womb, sold on their website and also on Amazon. Website is pasted below.

This product is being marketed as a safe sleep alternative, however it is a SIDS risk. Children under the age of 6 months are at risk of DEATH by using this product. It goes against all SIDS guidelines, and any child care professional will tell you that it is unsafe. This company is putting infants at risk. The website claims that there is no known cause for SIDS, which is untrue. Unsafe sleep conditions are largely responsible for SIDS deaths.

I have not used this product myself, as I know that it is dangerous. I am reporting it to help prevent future deaths.

The product, in the report: The product is a hammock that hangs in the babies crib that the baby sleeps in

The crescent womb claims to be a safe sleeping environment and also claims to reduce the risk of SIDS. This product goes against all AAP sleep standards and everything recommendation to reduce the risk of SIDS. It has babies sleep in an elevated hammock versus flat on their back. This leaves babies at risk of positional asphyxiation, becoming entangled in the hammock, or falling out of the hammock and becoming injured. This product needs to be stopped before it causes a baby to die. According the the company, QVC has picked up this product. Please look into this product.

The product, in the report: Baby hammock for new-borns/babies . Product name: Crescent womb

As a medical doctor, I am concerned that a new hammock for baby recently launched may asphyxiate them. This hammock for babies is called :Crescent womb Their web site is: http://www.crescentwomb.com/ The baby’s position is “chin to chest” due to the way this hammock is attached to the crib. The video aired on their web site show manly babies with the head turned on the side but one of them holds his head straight with his chin touching the chest. While this company advertises on facebook “ This innovation could save your baby’s life” https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=943416375787810&id=506288402833945 They also advertise on their web site that “By reducing environmental factors associated with SIDS, Crescent Womb creates the safest environment for your baby out side of a parents arms.”

I’m afraid that this device will asphyxiate some babies this is why I report it.

Also what will happen if the baby fall outside of the netting ? There is s dangerous gap which creates a hazard of strangulation/suffocation.

Made Aug 10, 2016, sent to the company Sep 29, 2016, published by CPSC Oct 14, 2016

The product, in the report: Crescent womb. Mesh and cloth that clips on to the top of a crib.

I’m concerned with the product “crescent womb.” It is pictured spread over an open sided crib. An infant could easily roll out of it onto the ground. In addition, a “sling” like that may promote asphyxiation from a “chin to chest” position. It should not be advertised as a safe place for an infant to sleep. The AAP is clear that infants belong in a crib on a flat surface with a well fitted sheet on their back.

  8. No one hurt

Made Aug 10, 2016, sent to the company Sep 29, 2016, published by CPSC Oct 14, 2016

The product, in the report: The Crescent Womb is a hammock that is suspended above an infant’s crib. The infant is put to sleep in the hammock, rather than on the firm, flat mattress in the crib.

I am a pediatrician and worked for 4 years in a neonatal intensive care unit.

I am concerned about the Crescent Womb - a sleep hammock marketed towards infants. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1727087541/crescent-womb-infant-safety-bed

This infant sleep hammock increases the risk of infant death as the hammock promotes a chin-to-chest position (as shown in the manufacturer’s own pictures of the product - http://www.crescentwomb.com/uploads/7/0/3/3/70333151/s687171726677863482_p2_i7_w2560.jpeg ).

There is also a risk of entrapment and/or strangulation as depending on the size of the crib used, the baby could roll and get its head stuck between the hammock and the side of the crib.

This product falsely claims to decrease the risk of SIDS, when in reality I am worried it will only increase the risk.
