The product, in the report: Great Value Soft White Incandescent On/Off Switch Night Light
I purchased a replacement night light with incandescent bulb from Wal-Mart (Great Value Soft White Incandescent, item number 1038, made in China but said to be designed by Meridian Electric Company of St. Louis). Both the replacement and the original are new items purchased this year. The problem with the 1st one is that if the two prongs are fully inserted into the duplex receptacle, the light is always on and the switch does not work. The switch works if there is about 1/8 of an inch of metal exposed on the prongs but it is not fully inserted. It is as if the outlet squeezes the switch contacts together leaving it in an always on condition. Since the outlet is to the right and above a bathroom sink, I decided to buy another one. As soon as I plugged the new night light into the receptacle, it exploded with a loud bang! Fortunately the plastic shield in front of the night light prevented me from eye injury as I was not wearing glasses. The GFCI circuit breaker also tripped. I am not an electrical engineer but I do have a doctor’s degree in physics so I carefully removed the duplex receptacle from the wall. The hot, neutral, and ground wires were all firmly and properly attached to the receptacle. I reset the breaker and found the outlet functional so I KNOW the problem is with the night light. I made several pictures of the exploded bulb. I will return the repackaged item to Wal-Mart.
