The product, in the report: Toy giraffe [Teether]
Caller stated that her 6-month-old child choked on the toy, the child had placed the leg of the giraffe down her throat, she immediately removed it, but could have caused serious injuries if she did not act quickly. Caller stated that the toy is labeled for 0-12 months. No medical attention was needed. No air was passing around the leg lodged into her throat. The manufacturer was not contacted.
Caller is concerned that there have been other complaints online about the same incident. Caller feels that this toy is unsafe for children and should be reported, before other children are injured.

The product, in the report: It is a teething toy for children in the shape of a giraffe
I noticed posts going around about Sophia the Giraffe and it having mold inside so I was curious and cut my sons opened and to my shock his has mold growing inside. I have always been very careful to follow the instructions for cleaning I always only wiped it down With a damp cloth because for a tether 30.00 is very expensive so I especially wanted to make sure to take care of it properly since it really is the only tether he would use and I was comfortable after reading all the positive reviews and looking into what it was made out of.

Seen by a doctor or nurse Made Jan 18, 2017, sent to the company Feb 6, 2017, published by CPSC Feb 28, 2017
The product, in the report: Teether
I purchased a Sophie the giraffe teether for my daughter a few months ago. I made sure to clean it often and never used it as a bath toy. My daughter used it many times. I noticed an odor coming out of the hole and then saw an article about Sophie being full of mold. I put two and two together and decided to cut the teether and make sure it was ok. It was not, it was full of nasty black mold. During the last few months my daughter has had a rash which started on her face. The Dr said it was eczema and that my daughter must be allergic to something in her environment. I have picture of the teether and Dr reports of the rash.

The product, in the report: Teething toy
Product is Sophie giraffe teething toy. Reports on social media say that toys contain mold. This prompted us to cut open this toy which our 8 month old has been using for 6 months. Sure enough, it is full of black mold. This toy should not be used by children, especially kids who are teething, which causes excessive saliva and profuse drooling.

The product, in the report: Sophie the Giraffe teether rubber ,total height 7 inches ,2-3 inches leg long
Sophie La Giraffe teething toy My daughter is 5 month old and 3 weeks , she was army crawling on the floor and chewing the Giraffe teething toy while she on her tummy.I was watching her .I turn my head away just a second and turn back, my daughter wasn’t move, she didn’t make a sound neither, I got down my knee watch her closer. She was choking on Sophie Giraffe front leg that slipped in her throat too far and blocking her airway, she can’t breath or make any sound. I realized she was choking and almost stop breathing. I pulled the Giraffe teething toy out of her mouth then she threw up and starting breathing. I was terrified and didn’t realize that expensive famous toy will become a great danger teething toy if the baby chewing in while they are on their tummy on the ground. I feel really disappoint that there are many post complaint in the internet comment about this teething toy and the company distributor in America confirmed that the Giraffe teething toy not choking hazardous. and It never been recall. This teething toy apparently choking hazard for my daughter and I almost lost her forever.

First aid Made Sep 26, 2016, sent to the company Oct 4, 2016, published by CPSC Oct 26, 2016
The product, in the report: Sophie the Giraffe teether made by Vulli
My son has the Sophie Giraffee teether made by Vulli. On 9/26/16 he was chewing on it like has been for a month of so. One of the legs became completely lodged in his throat. His hands were no longer on the toy and the leg was completely lodged for what we estimate for several minutes. He began choking and gagging. My husband was close by and was able to pull it out. He cried for a while which I believe to be because his throat hurt. Had he not been so closely monitored, he could have died.
Google searches of this issue indicate that it’s ongoing and the toy is unsafe. Multiple people talk about the legs being lodged in the throat. Why has this toy not been recalled?

No one hurt Made Sep 14, 2016, sent to the company Oct 5, 2016, published by CPSC Oct 20, 2016
The product, in the report: Sophie the Girafe. Total length 7 inches, width 4 inches. Length of legs 2 and 1/4 inches. Soft rubber Teething Toy. It is a cream color with orange spots. Concern is the length of the legs and the diameter of the hoofs are what I believe is what got lodged in my Grandaughter’s airway.
My 6 month old Granddaughter’s airway was blocked when using the Sophie the Girafe! Sitting on the floor with my Granddaughter in my lap I introduced Sophie the Girafe to her for her to put in her mouth as she is teething, it was obvious she loved the soft sensation on her gums. After putting one of the legs in her mouth I heard a little gasp, no air was coming out, I gave a quick pull the leg was out, she was breathing fine, thank God! My granddaughter’s longest finger measures one and a half inches long, the giraffe’s leg measures two and a quarter inches long. Her little fingers are also very small around, where not only is the giraffe’s leg is larger around, the hoof is so much larger than a baby’s fingertip. I believe it is the hoof of the giraffe that was lodged in her airway. I was very concerned that this could happen to another baby I reached out to the US Safety Product Safety Commission as well as the toy Company. The toy company states this toy stimulates the five senses, Taste: “Sophie the Girafe is made of 100% natural rubber and food paint, and is completely safe to chew, just like a feeding bottle teat. Her soft texture and numerous chewable parts (ears, horns, legs) make her perfect for soothing a baby’s sore gums during teething”. The toy company’s response to me stated their company meets legal European and worldwide standards and does not create a risk of choking or oppression. They perform tests to simulate the throat and trachea of a child and concludes the giraffe cannot cause a child to choke and is not a choking hazard. Also to provide a child with parental supervision. Also they compared what happened to my granddaughter as: “When a baby puts their fingers in their mouth, they may be able to regurgitate themselves and/or emit choking sounds that can frighten parents. This may also occur when a child puts Sophie la giraffe in their mouth. This is not a loss of breath, which can arise when respiratory tracts are blocked, but regurgitation.” My Grandaughter’s airway was blocked! We are the voice for our precious babies. We need more thorough testing to keep our babies safe and hol the toy companies accountable. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has been notified.

No one hurt Made Mar 3, 2014, sent to the company Mar 11, 2014, published by CPSC Mar 26, 2014
The product, in the report: Sophie the Giraffe (the package with the rubber giraffe and the stuffed animal giraffe)
Sophie the Giraffe
When I purchased this there was a piece of the rubber on the head of the giraffe that had been torn/pulled away from the horn on the top of the head. I had to pull this off because it was coming lose and could have been a choking hazard for my daughter. Now there is a hole in the back of the head that I could only assume is going to get bigger as she chews on it and in turn the whole horn could fall off. On the stuffed animal giraffe the ear is only sewn on half way. Therefore, it is very easy to pull off and will also be a choking hazard.
I googled a customer service phone number for the company and got a telephone number on the same web page as a form I could email. I called this number and a guy named [REDACTED] answered. He sounded surprised and bothered to get my phone call. He started asking me where I got his phone number from. I then told him I was trying to file a complaint about this product and asked who I could talk to. He told me that I could talk to him but he did not sound happy about it all. When I advised him of the problems he told me that it must be something that I did to the product because they have sold over 50 million of this products. I advised him that all I have done was run the rubber giraffe under water to rinse it off and that was it. I have not even washed the stuffed animal giraffe. When I told [REDACTED] this he told me that it must be from a dog chewing on it. I advised him that my dogs are not allowed near my daughter’s toys so it was not from them. When I advised him that I understood that he might have sold 50,000 of these products but mine was defective, [REDACTED] corrected me in the middle of my sentence by telling me that he actually sold 50 million not 50,000. [REDACTED] then told me that he has received several frivolous complaints about the product (which to me meant he did not believe anything I was saying). Then he asked me to send him pictures of the defects, which I complied. However, [REDACTED] should have just asked for the pictures in the first place so he could investigate the problem instead of treating me like a liar to begin with.

No one hurt Made Jun 23, 2013, sent to the company Jul 2, 2013, published by CPSC Jul 24, 2013
The product, in the report: Sophie the Giraffe teething toy by Vulli
My 5-month-old son was chewing on Sophie the Giraffe (by Vulli) while lying on the floor. He rolled over which, at this point, happens pretty regularly. He was only 5 feet from me and my daughter, so we noticed pretty quickly that he was struggling more than usual on his stomach. When we flipped him back over, he had a giraffe leg shoved the entire way into his mouth, stuck in his throat, with another of the legs squeezed against the outside of his cheek so it was “clipped” around his mouth. He had vomited and was struggling to breathe. When my daughter pulled it out of his mouth, there was an audible pop and she had to tug, so it was jammed in there. Luckily we were close to him and this all happened in less than 30 seconds, but for a product that has been available for 50 years to cause a problem like this is very frightening.

The product, in the report: Sophie Giraffe by Vulli. Numer on product is 321230 Purchased at Sam’s Club in November 2012.
My 5 month old child was laying on the floor on his stomach playing with Sophie Giraffe by Vulli a teething toy. I stepped away to sit down and when I looked back at my baby, Sophie the Giraffe’s legs were logded in my sons throat and he was vomiting and face down on the floor. I grabbed him and had to pull the toy from his throat. He wasn’t able to breath or swallow with the toys legs down his throat. This toy is commonly in the hands of babies while parents drive or are otherwise not immediately watching the child. This incident happend so quickly and my child could not make a sound. If the toys legs were somehow attched together then they couldn’t be swallowed or may not fit down a small childs throat.
