The product, in the report: pacifier with a cloth duck sown onto it. Sears kenmore Model # 790 70403012 serial# VF24786097
Our five month old child was laying on his back in the living room using his WubbaNub Infant Pacifier - Yellow Duck By: Gracie (sold at Baby’s R Us listed as “R”Web#: 551629 SKU:3735C658 UPC/EAN/ISBN:719771211958 Manufacturer #: WN21196).
My wife went into the kitchen to prepare his bottle and heard him stop crying for his food and start gagging. Upon returning to the living room, our son’s face was red, tears were coming from his eyes, and he had a panicked look. One of the red legs of the duck was in his mouth and partially down his throat obstructing his airway. It was sufficiently far enough down his throat to require some force to remove it.
Upon reflection, it appears rather obvious now that a baby will chew on the product’s extremities and try to swallow them. The legs of this particular product have beads in them and flairs at the bottom. It’s just a guess, but it seems to me that when placing the leg in their mouth the beads may be pushed upwards, then upon swallowing the beads could be forced back down causing the item to swell and further lodge in the child’s throat.
We had just purchased a frog of the same product and it has legs with substantially the same design. In the past, we would allow our son to sleep with this product.
