The product, in the report: Infant Car Seat

Caller stated that flames from a candle near by the car seat caused it to erupt in flames. She had placed the car seat in a restaurant and a votive oil candle was nearby, the heat started melting the visor which extended to the seat and then to the plastic base. Fortunately, the child was not in the seat. The flames were contained but the seat was burnt.

9/23/13 The manufacturer was contacted and she was informed to send pictures of the incident. She stated that she emailed photos of the incident but have not received any updates as yet.

She is concerned that this infant car seat poses a fire hazard due to the material it is made from and should be investigated.

The product, in the report: Baby Car Seat Model name is Baby Trend - Dakota Flex-Loc Weight limit 5 to 30 pounds Child Height limit: 30” or less Back facing car seat

I purchased a Baby Trend Travel Unit - stroller and car seat on 9/11/11 for my granddaughter. The baby was born on 10/29/2011. On June 24, 2012 while carrying the 8 month old baby in the car seat, the handle gave away. The rivit between the car seat and handle bent causing the handle to come off. When the mother contacted the manufacturer, Baby Trend Inc, they said the 2 year warranty was up. They said it wasn’t their fault Wal-Mart had kept it on their shelf for 2 years. They then called back and wanted to know the weight of the baby. The mother told them she weighs 16 pounds. The weight limit on the car seat is 30 pounds. Their next suggestion was to send it to them and maybe they could fix it. Of course this would leave the mother with no car seat to use. I was under the impression a warranty was valid from the date of purchase by the consumer not the date it was sent to their vendor. At any rate, they could care less about the defect with this car seat. I am horrified this is a defect in this product and that far more serious harm can come to another infant put into this car seat. I feel strongly this should be looked at. My great granddaughter was not hurt, lucky for her it broke when her mother was lifting the car seat off the couch so it fell only a foot back to the couch with no harm done to her.
