Made Aug 13, 2024, sent to the company Oct 8, 2024, published by CPSC Oct 23, 2024

The product, in the report: bassinet/play yard combination

(08/02/2024) The consumer is concerned about the safety of the mesh around the play yard. The consumer has four-month-old twin nephews. Her brother sent her a video showing her how the mesh had cut the babies feet when they had rubbed up against the mesh. Initially they thought the cuts on their feet came from the hospital tags that were still on the babies’ ankles. The babies were in NICU and had recently come home from the hospital. Ointment from the doctor was applied to the cuts. Also, the babies had to get iron

The product, in the report: Baby Trends Lil’ Snooze Deluxe II Nursery Center, Twinkle Twinkle Little Moon Item Weight 27.6 Pounds Item Dimensions 42.5 L x 35.4 H x 41.3 inches long. Floor area 35” Max Weight 30 KG or 66.14 pounds

My 11-month-old granddaughter (weigh at the time of the incident - 20 pounds) was using the Baby Trends Lil Snooze Deluxe II Nursery Center when the side rail collapsed causing her to fall and hit her head on the bottom of the play yard. Thankfully she did not fall out onto the floor and hurt herself. I contacted Amazon where I bought it and was directed to Baby Trends who manufactured it for support under the warranty. When I emailed the manufacturer, I was told that the reason the lock released is because of her weight. The lock did not simply release. It completely BROKE. If only 20 pounds of pressure can cause a safety latch to become dislodged or break on a product that has a maximum weight limit of 30KG or 66.14 pounds meant to keep growing infants and toddlers safe, that is a major safety concern. I was advised by the manufacturer to completely collapse the unit to re lock the rail, which I did before I even contacted them, and the rail will not lock no matter what I do. It didn’t just unlatch, the lock broke.

The product, in the report: Babytrend Playard? PY86XXXC? Lil’ SnoozeTMM Deluxe II Nursery Center Playard

The mesh side of the play yard separated, creating a hole where a baby could become entrapped or escape. I purchased the playard in fall of 2022 to use specifically for travel. It was used successfully 4 times, each time for 2 nights. Twice when he was an Immobile infant and twice after he turned one. The 5th time it was used, I noticed the incredibly dangerous hole in the side. My son was 25 pounds and 32” when this occurred. In between uses it was stored safely on the top shelf of his bedroom closet. I am just fortunate and thankful that I noticed the hole before he did. We follow all safe sleep and manufacture guidelines and the product was never used improperly.

A one year old suffered a severe laceration to his left index finger after inserting it into an upper corner hinge of a Baby Trend playard.

The parent, who did not own and was unfamiliar with the product, was attempting to assemble it. The child reached out to touch it, and inserted their finger in the hinge as the parent attempted to lock the bar in place. A laceration resulted, removing a section of flesh from the fingertip, including the nailbed, and clipping off a portion of bone.

Fortunately, doctors have indicated that function will not be compromised, though the finger will be slightly shorter and the nail is unlikely to regrow.

The product, in the report: Baby Trend Lil Snooze Deluxe II Nursery Center in Bluebell [REDACTED]

Baby Trend Lil Snooze Deluxe II Nursery Center, Bluebell play yard. My 8 month old was in her play yard and standing holding the edge of the play yard. She lost her grip and hit her head on the corner and started crying. I noticed a red indented spot on her head. When I looked in the play yard, I realized that there are hard plastic protrusions that initially held the sleeper. The protrusions are hard, pointed and have baby finger sized holes in them. These protrusions can’t be removed, covered or blocked in any way.

i bought a playpen when i was pregnant with my child and went to set it up it had a hole in the corner where the stitching is. so I took it back and got another one and set it up. my neborn used the top half of the playpen cause it had the bassinet at the top. when my neborn was about 1 month old we noticed that again the corner where the stitching is has a hole in it so we quit using it. it was the exact same kind of playpen for little boys sold at walmart. It has the little sea creatures on it and it was like eighty dollars.

She says that a child drops off into the next slat, rolls over and have their faces buried face down. CONSUMER ADDED: when laying on mat in bassinet or in bottom. Baby rolls over, three times found with face buried. The mat dips down and is not level. This can be seen in photos. Did it with one baby in play yard. The company tried to use two babies as an excuse. When husband put plywood under mat it was fine. In photos you can see gap between wood pieces.

The consumer says she would never place the children on there stomachs who are about now 8 months. She contacted the manufacturer who offered to send replacement padding. She says at time of the incident the babies were 2 1/2 weeks to 1 month old twins inside the play yard.

A support pole from the bottom of the bassinet section of the playard poked through the mesh on the side of the playard. Once bassinet was no longer in use this became a major safety hazard for our baby. The hole ripped big enough so that he stuck his head through the hole creating a strangling hazard. He did not receive any injuries. We stopped using the playard and called the manufacturer who said it was no longer under warranty and that we would have to pay to ship it to them, pay for the repair and then pay to have it shipped back to ourselves. They offered no other solution.

The product, in the report: NURSERY CENTER - MULTI-USE OPTIONS AS BASSINET AND PLAYPEN

    To Whom It May Concern:

In June 2010, while 5 months pregnant, I purchased the Baby Trend Butterfly Nursery Center (item number PY8191). I intended to use the Nursery Center as a bassinet for the first four months of my child’s life and then to use it as a playpen when my child started to crawl. I carefully looked the item over and was satisfied with how the product seemed to be made. I also understood at the time that there was a limited warranty on the item. I gave birth to my child [REDACTED] and used the bassinet for the first four months as I originally intended. After the time frame mentioned I carefully put the item away in its carry case and stored it safely until I would use it again. In May I got rid of the receipt because I was not having any issues with the item and did not anticipate any occurring. In June my child started to crawl and I again pulled the item out to use it as a playpen. July 7th I noticed that the stitching on the item started to come undone. The enclosed pictures show the areas where the stitching was coming undone. Upon examination of the item it was clear that it had not been snagged on any other item nor was there anything but faulty stitching involved in the malfunction of the item. I contacted the Baby Trend Company and after several conversations they were willing to fix the item and ship it back to me, but I would need to pay to send it to them. They re-iterated that there was a 6 month warranty on the item and told me that I should have carefully looked the item over when I purchased it. I am writing this letter because I have several concerns with this item and with my interaction with the company. My first and greatest concern is, as you can see from the picture, that the hole along the stitching is large enough that my child could have fit her head through the hole and been unable to get it back through, thus choking to death. I do not want the company to re-stitch the item because I am concerned that this would happen again. I feel like this needs to be looked into because this could cause harm to a child. My second issue with this situation is the warranty on the item. There is only a 6 month warranty on the item but the only way that this issue would have been noticed is for something to be placed in the bottom of the playpen in order to put weight on the stitches to show how poorly made the item was. As in my case, most people would not put their child in the bottom of the playpen until the child is crawling, which is usually not until 6 or 7 months, thus the warranty is already void by the time this issue would arise. It seems as if the company wants to ensure that they would not have to replace an item not well made or to cause the customer to pay more money later on a faulty item. I am a mother that will not put my child back into a faulty playpen, but there are other mothers who would find the cost of fixing this item too great and would put their child back in playpen, thus endangering their child. I am asking that CPSC look into the quality of this item to ensure that this item does not endanger a life of a child. This company needs to be held accountable for the items that they make.
