The product, in the report: Philips Avent Natural Response Nipples

We had used Philips Avent bottles and nipples with our daughter in 2021 and were very satisfied, so we chose them again for our exclusively bottle-fed newborn son without hesitation. Unfortunately, shortly after bringing him home from the hospital, he began experiencing severe feeding difficulties - taking hours to consume minimal amount of milk, crying inconsolably, spitting up frequently, and failing to gain weight. We spent weeks trying to identify the cause and consulted our pediatrician, who recommended a number of interventions like changing to a hypoallergenic formula, starting reflux medication, and ordering larger flow nipples (we tried flow 3 and 4). We also met with two different lactation consultants and both of them said there are known issues with new, re-designed Avent nipples. We tested all of the ones we had at home and we found that many of the nipples regardless of flow size were dispensing little to no liquid at all. There was significant variability, even among nipples of the same size. Checking the one star reviews on Amazon for this product revealed that many others have experienced the same issue. Switching to a different bottle type resolved all issues immediately - feeding improved, reflux disappeared, and our son began thriving. I hope Philips Avent will investigate this issue thoroughly and implement better quality control to ensure other families do not endure the same hardship.

The product, in the report: Philips Avent Natural Response Baby Bottle This bottle comes in glass, plastic, and multiple sizes. The nipples themselves are also sold separately. These are the defective nipples: AVENT Philips Natural Response Baby Bottle Nipples Flow 0 AVENT Philips Natural Response Baby Bottle Nipples Flow 1 AVENT Philips Natural Response Baby Bottle Nipples Flow 2 The Philips Avent bottle I received (as a gift) came with a Flow 2.

Philips Avent makes a baby bottle called “Natural Response.” https://www.usa.philips.com/c-m-mo/baby-bottles/natural-response

These bottles come with nipples rated for milk flow for babies of certain ages. You can see those ratings on their Amazon store page https://www.amazon.com/Philips-Natural-Newborn-SCF651-43/dp/B07N976C6R.

A few years ago Philips Avent redesigned their nipples to have a new design with a spiral cut pattern in the top of the nipple. These new nipples no longer allow milk to flow. The nipple sizes 0, 1, and 2 are not usable by babies. Milk does not come out of the bottle. The nipples rated for babies of certain ages do not allow those babies to drink.

In my own experience, I received a Philips Avent Natural glass baby bottle as a gift with a Flow 2 rated nipple. According to Philips, a Flow 2 is appropriate for a 1month+ year old. I tried bottle feeding my 6 day old baby with this nipple. There was no milk flow at all. It took me a while to realize the baby was not getting any milk. My child had a lower than expected weight gain. It is also very distressing to try to feed a screaming infant at 4am without having access to any other bottles.

I have contacted Philips Avent support who claim I have a defective bottle. However I highly doubt this is case. The nipple flow sizes 0, 1 and 2 no longer allow milk flow after the redesign. There are thousands of 1 star reviews of the nipples that say exactly this, including many reports of lower weight in babies. A small sample of reviews that match my exact experience:

    > Nipple doesnt provide enough flow to a newborn. Baby gets more tired trying to pull milk though than what is actually being produced. Called advent and they sent me replacement nipples. Same result. Would not recommend. Baby lost weight as of a result.

    > Please do not buy. We bought because my son was struggling to gain weight and we were supplementing with formula. Caused days of distress as he would take NOTHING from the bottle even though he was sucking on it. These are known to not let any flow through. We jumped straight to size 3 for nipples because 1 and 2 were so bad.

    > Big mistake. First I bought the same number as the one she took to. No indication that they changed them other than inclusion of response in the name. She screamed and screamed because the flow was too low.

There are thousands of these reviews on the store page https://www.amazon.com/Philips-Natural-Newborn-SCF651-43/dp/B07N976C6R

Philips Avent refuses to take action despite the pervasiveness of this issue for years.

The product, in the report: Phillips Avent natural 4 ounce bottle. It was the cap that goes over the nipple that got stuck on my sons face. I believe these bottles were purchased in 2018 for my first child and my sister has them to use with her 2 month old. Regardless, it appears that the lids on the new versions might be exactly the same.

I am babysitting my 2 month old niece as her mom just went back to work and I’m a stay at home mom. My 16 month old likes to play around with an extra bottle while I feed my niece. He likes to put the cap on and take it off again. Well, as I was warming up my nieces bottle this morning, my son came up to me in a panic. He couldn’t breathe. The cap of the Phillips Avent bottle formed a perfect seal around both his mouth and nose. It took a lot of pressure for me to pop the suction and get it off of him. We are both shook up but ultimately he’s okay. If he didn’t come to me right away I fear something awful could have happened.

We started using Philips Avent Natural Response Nipple Flow - 6+ Months (SCY965/02) in the begining of May, 2022. Our baby choked on her baby formula when she started feeding from the bottle yesterday we thought of it as a one-off and ignored it. Today also she experienced the same issue and we observed the nipple was cracking from the top portion, this is a major baby safety issue I wanted to highlight as its detectability is pretty low

The product, in the report: Philips Avent Natural Response nipples in sizes 2, 3, and 4. Their other nipple sizes likely have the same issue, but these three sizes were the ones we tried. The Philips Avent Natural bottles used to come with the “Natural” nipple, which worked fine. They changed their nipple design to “Natural Response” nipple, which is the one that doesn’t work properly. This is not due to manufacturing defects, the issue lies with the inherent design of the nipple not allowing enough flow.

We have tried to use Philips Avent Natural baby bottles to feed our newborn. The issue is with their new Natural Response nipple. Hardly any milk comes out, even though our baby is healthy and has a strong latch. We tried using level 2, 3, and 4 nipples with our baby, and our baby still wasn’t able to get enough formula. Our pediatrician told us our baby wasn’t getting nearly enough to eat, she was dehydrated at only 4 days old, and when the pediatrician tested our baby bottles, she couldn’t get much formula to come out. She informed us to switch to a different brand of bottle immediately. Our baby was very dehydrated after only 3 days of use, I’m scared to think of how much worse she could’ve gotten had we not known and continued using the product for longer. I’m concerned that this product is endangering babies because parents might think it is safe to use.

The product, in the report: Philips Avent Natural baby bottle

I recently purchased the “new style” Philips Avent Natual bottle nipple in size “Flow 3” meant for 3 month old babies. My baby was unable to get any milk flow whatsoever from this product. I then went online and saw recent reviews from all major retailers on this product and they all say the same exact thing. These need to be taken off the market ASAP as they can cause harm to young babies by not allowing them to feed properly.

My daughter was having her morning bottle when she started to gag and choke. I rushed to her. Milk was flooding her face and she was struggling to get something out of her mouth. The nipple tip broke off in her mouth! I am an RN and was able to safely remove the broken tip from her throat. I have a picture of this, and have saved the item.
