  1. Emergency room

Made Oct 7, 2024, sent to the company Oct 10, 2024, published by CPSC Oct 25, 2024

The product, in the report: Summer Infant Thruway 52W Series Retractable Hardware Mounted Mesh Pet and Baby Gate in Black, Fits up to 52 in. Wide, 30in. Tall

We installed a retractable gate at the top of our stairs, as part of our baby-proofing efforts. The gate is supposed to require two steps for opening and closing - a lock is twisted and then the gate is simultaneously pulled open or shut. Yesterday, the gate was closed, but it opened and my 11 month old fell down the stairs. When we returned from the emergency room we examined the gate and it turns out the lock is defective. It doesnt actually lock the gate and it doesnt need to be turned for the gate to open. A child can just lean against the gate and it will pop open.

The product, in the report: Summer Infant Extra Tall & Wide Safety Pet and Baby Gate, 29.5”-53” Wide, 38” Tall, Pressure or Hardware Mounted, Install on Wall or Banister in Doorway or Stairway, Auto Close Walk-Thru Door

I purchased three, extra tall, Summer Infant gates. These gates were installed in January now that my baby is crawling, and after less than 3 months they can be opened by a light pull. I found this out after my baby opened one at the top of the stairs with one arm! This is a huge safety hazard.

The product, in the report: Multi-Use Decorative Extra Tall Walk-Thru Gate - 07980

We have 2 gates from Summer Infact brand (Item # 07600A / 07600BZ) and the black “door stopper” piece broke off on both of them. The gate at the bottom of the stairs broke after about 2.5 years of use and the gate at the top broke in June 2023. (3.5 years of use). Summer Infant company is aware of the issue and even have a replacement part available: [REDACTED] . With this “door stopper” broken, the gate swings both ways and when installed at the top of the stairs, causes a hazard for young children.

Summer Infant Modern Home Safety Gate TCIN: 75456312 UPC: 012914330005 Item Number (DPCI): 030-04-2168 Bought two of these gates, there are several design flaws. The diamond grid pattern on the gate allows babies to climb on and get over the gate. The gate hardware comes loose, which then the gate doesn’t line up and falls or wont latch until reset (only holds for a few days before needing to be re tightened. The plastic gate latch broke on both gates, just from closing the gate, allowing the gate to swing both ways. My baby climbed over the gate and fell, and the gate design also cut his toes.

We purchased the Summer Infant Union Arch Baby Gate new at Target May 2020. Recently the gate was not closing proper and the spring /post at the bottom came loose. The protective cover over this post was also broken. Our son leaned on the swinging gate door and it swung from under him outward. He landed on this post and it cut a huge hole into his mouth. He received emergency oral sutures in the ER, and will have long term scars from this.

The product, in the report: Summer Infant safety gate Model 27980; Manufacture date: 18ll0598. Used to keep 1.5 year old out of kitchen.

I purchase Summer Infant safety gate Model 27980 Manufacture date: 18110598 December2019 and used it 1 week while grandson here for visit. Put back in box. Grandson returned May 2020 and have used the gate for 1.5 weeks. Screw heads on top swinging hardware have broken off. Screw bodies are still in wood. Called Summer Infant for fix as I assumed other consumers are having the same problem and company would suggest fix. I was informed my 90 day warrantee had expired and that screw bodies can not be drilled out. No remedy to my problem was suggested. We adults are currently using a step stool to get over the gate and are using rope to hold the gate together. It is now a safety hazard for grandma and grandpa!

The product, in the report: Multi-use decorative extra tall walk-thru gate in Bronze - made by Summer Infant. 36” tall, fits openings up to 28.5-48” wide. Model 07600

I bought a Multi-use decorative Extra tall walk-thru gate from Summer via Amazon. There is a plastic “stopper” to prevent the door from swinging both directions. After limited use in a residential family setting this plastic piece broke off allowing the door to swing open over the stairs. This happened with the gate closing naturally itself without additional force. Fortunately it happened when someone was going upstairs, opened the gate, went through and closed the gate so no injuries occurred. Upon researching a replacement product I found that all of the replacements are out of stock. The design seemed faulty to begin with but then seeing that they are out of stock on the replacement for months leads me to believe that this is a very common occurrence for them and there is a larger issue going on with the safety of this product.

I purchased a baby gate designed for the top of staircases with a railing from Amazon and made by Summer Infant. The product on Amazon is listed as “Summer Banister and Stair, Top of Stairs Baby Gate with Dual Installation Kit, Honey Oak Wood Finish – 33” Tall, Fits Openings up to 32” to 48” Wide, Baby and Pet Gate for Doorways and Stairways”. The cam/metal hardware at the top of the gate failed/sheared apart within my first week of owning the gate. The company replaced the unit for me. Now, several months later the baby gate has broken in the exact same location. The metal hardware failure is in the exact same spot and seems to be a poor weld or glue that comes apart. No injuries occurred at my home, but if this were to occur while a child were shaking the gate, I am positive that it could fail and a child could fall down stairs as a result.

We purchased a baby gate from Target for the top of our stairs. The gate is the Summer Infant union arch safety gate. They state the the gate can be used on top of stairs, bottom of stairs, and doorways. After using the gate with no issues for a few months, a plastic piece broke off. This piece is the only thing that keeps the gate closed. Any child can push or lean on the gate and fall down the stairs; with out the piece the gate can be easily pushed opened. The gate is supposed unlock by unlatching and lifting, but it’s not working how it’s supposed to. I contacted the manufacturer Summer Infant they have the replacement piece for sale online, however they are out of stock. They say they won’t have the piece back in stock for months. I have read other reviews online and I’m not the only one with the same issue. This gate is a major safety hazard, and it needs to be recalled.

The product, in the report: Summer infant retractable baby gate

Summer infant retractable baby gate. Used at the top of the stairs installed per directions. The screws and anchors are cheep and do not work to keep the gate anchored to the wall. My husband went to open the gate and the whole thing came off the wall. All of the screws came right out of the anchors. If my child had pushed on the gate they would have fallen down a flight of stair. This product is not safe for the top if the stairs. I contacted summer infant and they did not acknowledge that this is a problem they just wanted to send a Different gate or different parts non of which fix this safety problem. I emailed back that i was reporting the unsafe item before someone is seriously injured or killed.

The product, in the report: Summer Infant Multi-Use Extra Tall Walk-Thru Gate, 36” tall, white color. Metal tubular welded construction.

The product is less than six months old, it is the Summer Infant Multi-use Extra Tall Walk-Thru Gate, MFG Item #07060EZ. Our 18-month old toddler was standing, holding the vertical bars of the gate and shaking them. He pulled one of the bars completely free from the frame, even though it was welded in place. It is actually a tube, not a solid bar. I have alerted the manufacturer, but thought to report it here as well. With the weld broken there was sharp bare metal on the ends of the now loose bar and on the frame itself where the bar was located. In addition, there is now a larger gap where the bar was in place and might be big enough for a small head to get stuck.

This is in reference to the “Summer Infant Custom Fit Walk-Thru Gate” that extends to 141” wide.

The metal bar next to the gate opening came off soon after installing. We did not realize it at the time, but it left a sharp jagged piece of metal behind. Our 11 month old son has had three cuts recently (cheek, lower leg, foot), and we couldn’t figure out where they were coming from. This morning he was playing by that area of the gate and started crying, I picked him up and noticed a large cut down his leg and realized he was bleeding. We have taken down the gate and will be returning it to BBB (I’ll hold on to it for 30 days first per your website). I have attached photos of the jagged metal and cuts. I have also reported this to the manufacturer.

The product, in the report: Wide opening baby gate with door.

We installed the Summer Infant Custom Fit Walk-thru Gate between our living room and kitchen to keep our son who is currently 20 months old out of the kitchen while we are cooking. We installed the gate approximately 4 months ago. After having the gate in use for about 2 months the welds holding the metal bars on the gate began to break loose. The only pushing or pulling done on the gate was by a toddler. The gate should be capable of taking pushing and pulling by a toddler. After the welds came loose our son was able to remove the hinge from the bottom of the gate, since the metal bar turned into the pin on the hinge at the bottom. This allowed our son to access the kitchen, thankfully we were able to see what had happened before our son got hurt on either 1.) the sharp metal edges now exposed or 2.) any number of items left in the kitchen which were supposed to be secured by the gate.

The product, in the report: “Summer” brand expandable walk thru baby gate. Metal frame with mesh material. Bi-swing gate.

The gate portion of the room divider has fractured in two(2) seperate locations resulting in instability as well as the ability for a child to exit/enter with limited restriction. The fractured locations also present with jagged edges that could result in injury. The fractures appear to have occured at a NON-seam location but they do seem to be the same type and size of fracture in the plastic.

I have digital pictures available for review and the gate is still in my possession.

When using this gate the side knobs pop out way too easily. One way this happens is when you are carrying a bunch of bags and it hits the side the knob comes out. If it is put at the top of the stairs the potential for the child to fall down the stairs is beyond risky.

The door of the gate cracks at the top joint forcing the door to completely pop out. I owned TWO gates for less than 4 months and both gates broke with no unusual use or trauma. One of the door completely broke off when my daughter was standing up holding the bars to support.

They replaced it every time. It broke at the joint when my 4 year old daughter tried to open the gate. She was not injured. I have removed and not had it replaced. I wanted to report it to you.

The product, in the report: It is a baby gate. It is described as “6 foot extra tall metal expansion gate”.

We purchased a baby gate manufactured by Summer Infant, Inc.

Summer Infant, Inc. 1275 Park East Dr Woonsocket, RI 02895-9905 1-800-268-6237

Model number 07710. The manufacture date has eight numbers. The first number is difficult to read.; it may be a “1” or it may be a “7”. The remaining numbers are _1052504. The product is described as a “6 foot extra tall metal expansion gate”.

The gait was properly installed and in use for a few days. Our 3-year old niece opened the gait door and lacerated her pinky finger in the hinge area. The gate door nearly amputated her finger. She was rushed to the ER and an orthopedist sutured her finger back together. X-rays revealed that her finger was not only lacerated but also broken. Her entire fingernail was found on the floor next to the gait.

The part of the door/gate that caused this injury was pre-assembled before shipping. Therefore, there is nothing I did wrong during assembly to create this pinch-point.

It is interesting to note that the picture of the gate on the box has a different door mechanism than the one we received in the box.

I feel this gait needs to be recalled because it has an obvious pinch-point that will amputate fingers.

We have other gates in our house from Summer Infant but they are different model numbers and slightly different gates. The other gates don’t have this same dangerous door mechanism.

I hope this saves other children from having to endure the pain of this injury.

The product, in the report: Summer Infant Stylish N Secure 6’ Metal Gate

We have a summer infant Stylish & Secure 6’ metal gate, which we use in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. We use it to block off a room. It is installed according to the instructions and has been in place for 9months- 1yr. The hinge is attached to the gate via one small weld, which is insufficient for holding the metal together securely. When I opened the gate, the door became unattached from the hinge mechanism, exposing very sharp metal which is extremely dangerous to children and adults. If a child were to have been pulling on the gate when it detached, the child could have been severely injured.

I have photos that I can send which can explain this better.

The product, in the report: Summer Infant Portable Playsafe Playard Model #07804

I purchased the Summer Infant Portable Playsafe Playard, received it today and put my 1-year-old daughter in it to see how it would work for her. I created the circular enclosure using all six panels. She was fine in it, until she was able to reach her arm, leg and then her HEAD out between two of the panels. I was sitting in the same room as her, about six feet away and it happened so quickly, by the time I got to her, her head was stuck between the two panels. I was able to open up the panels and get her out and she doesn’t appear to be injured. My fear is if her head (or any other baby in this model of playard) had gone all the way through and the panels tightened around her neck. The panels seem too flimsy to be safe! My baby just turned one, three weeks ago and has only been walking for less than a week, just to provide info. It’s not as though she is one, but almost two and more likely to have the strength to push her way through the panels.

Summer’s Infant Sure and Secure 6 foot Metal Expansion Gate

My 12 mos old daughter reached her arm through one of the skinnier areas in the bars on the section that has the door that swings open. She was able to squeeze her arm through, but when she got past her elbow and bent her arm, she was unable to pull it out. (When you bend your arm, you’ll notice that near the elbow the width of your arm increases.) When she realized she couldn’t pull it out, she pulled harder with her arm still bent and then got her arm wedged tight in between the bars. She started to scream, which got my attention. Seeing she was stuck and not immediately recognizing what had happened, I tried to pull her arm out as well, hurting her even more. After a few minutes of tugging with her in pain and crying, I finally realized that straightening her arm would help. I was then able to free her from the gate. She cried for a long time after and her arm is quite red where it was stuck. I imagine it will bruise but do not know because this incident just occurred. The other bars on the gate are a reasonable space apart, but these narrow areas are clearly a danger to children, which is ironic considering this is a safety product. I shudder to think what would have happened if I were in the shower or restroom at the time and could not hear her cries.

The product, in the report: Summer Infant Sure and Secure Extra Tall Walk Through Gate color--white comes with extensions http://www.amazon.com/Summer-Infant-Secure-Extra-Walk-Thru/dp/B0000DEW91

I have installed this baby gate at the bottom of my stairs as well as one in the hallway at the top. http://www.amazon.com/Summer-Infant-Secure-Extra-Walk-Thru/dp/B0000DEW91 The one at the top, I used the provided wall cups to make it more secure--not just pressure mounted. Yesterday, I left my 9 month old upstairs with her sister and ran down to get some laundry. I heard a kind of whining sound, so I went back up to see if soemthing was wrong. The baby had crawled out of the gate and had one hand on the stair to go down! These gates are supposed to “close and lock automatically”. I am assuming this one had not closed and locked as it would have been nearly impossible for a crawling baby to open it--I can’t even open it sometimes. Her sister was in the bathroom and claims not to have touched the gate, so I do not think it was her either. I had noticed the gate at the bottom of the stairs will not close unless it is done manually, but I figured it was because we had to add a piece of wood next to the banister to hold it in place properly. The one at the top was not similiarly rigged and was installed per directions and had worked, as far as I know, up until this point. I am so blessed that my baby caught herself and was able to vocalize her fear, but this is a very dangerous product and would like others to be aware of the problem.

The product, in the report: Summer Infant Extra Tall Baby gate. White metal with plastic hinges. Extensions for wider doorways. Pressure mountable for doorways and hardware mountable for top of stairs.

Two weeks ago I received a Summer Infant Extra tall baby gate for my baby shower. I installed it a few days later. The gate can be used for both regular doorways and top of stairs. Two days ago, my 4 year old daughter opened the gate to pass through and the plastic hinge just shattered causing the whole top of the gate to fall forward. She did not pull it hard and did not open it in any way I would not have. As the top of the gate broke, she stumbled forward. I am so thankful that we had not put this at the top of our stairs! Upon searching product reviews online I found that the exact same thing has happened to other consumers of Summer brand gates (other designs of their product in addition to the extra tall one we have). The quality of the plastic hinge is very poor for a heavy metal gate. When my 4 year old was born we had purchased 2 Summer Infant Extra Tall baby gates ((manuf. date 2003), but the design was a bit different and the product has stood up to it’s purpose. They close automatically as the product described and the hinges have held up. The newer design claims to swing closed on it’s own, but did not and hinge shattering is just dangerous. I worry about anyone who may place this gate at the top of the stairs. If the hinge failed upon opening, anyone could fall down the stairs. If a baby were to tug on the gate and it broke, the child could possibly die from the fall.

The gate is made by summer infant and it is called the sure and secure custom fit gate. I have had three of them break in the last three years in almost the same spot. I am thankful that I am only blocking one step with the gate and not ten. I have looked at the reviews and a lot of customers who have this gate have used it by a lot of stairs. Many customers have complained that the plastic on these gates have broken not just me. I do not want any injuries to my children brcause of this gate and I do not want to see any other children get injured.
