The product, in the report: Product Name: Rengue / VERASTE Retractable Baby Safety Gate Product Category: Baby Products Color: Black

Product Name: Rengue / VERASTE Retractable Baby Safety Gate Product Category: Baby Products Safety Gates / Barriers Seller/Retailer: Amazon.com Date of Incident: September 12, 2025 Location of Incident: Private residence Injured Person: Male child, 15 months old Description of Incident: On September 12, 2025, a catastrophic failure occurred involving a Rengue/VERASTE retractable baby safety gate purchased through Amazon. The gate was installed and used as intended and was relied upon as a safety barrier to prevent a 15-month-old child from accessing a hazardous area. Without warning, the gate failed, allowing the child to pass through the barrier. As a direct result of this failure, the child accessed a dangerous environment and experienced a near-fatal drowning incident involving oxygen deprivation, during which cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was administered for several minutes prior to successful resuscitation. Emergency medical intervention was required. Although the child survived, the incident resulted in significant medical trauma. Ongoing medical monitoring is required due to concerns regarding potential latent neurological and developmental effects associated with oxygen deprivation in young children. The failure of this gate defeated its core safety purpose. This product is marketed and relied upon as a protective device for infants and toddlers. Its failure created an immediate, life-threatening situation. Injury Details: Near-fatal drowning Oxygen deprivation Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) administered for several minutes Emergency medical treatment required Ongoing concern for delayed or latent neurological and developmental impacts Additional Safety Concerns: This incident raises serious concerns regarding: The structural integrity and design of the retractable gate The reliability of the locking and retracting mechanism Whether the product meets safety expectations for barriers intended to prevent infant and toddler access to hazardous areas The potential risk this product poses to other children if similar failures occur Additional Information: Following the incident, I was contacted by the claims administrator handling this matter on behalf of Amazon. During that communication, the assigned claims examiner stated that she was aware the product involved was manufactured and shipped from China and indicated that such products may not be subject to the same safety regulations as products manufactured in the United States. This statement raised additional concerns regarding regulatory compliance, safety testing, and oversight of the product involved in this incident. Given the severity of the outcome, the vulnerability of the intended users, and the products intended safety function, this product presents a substantial risk of serious injury or death.
