The product, in the report: Munchkin Auto modern baby gate. U-shaped tension gate bar on bottom

I purchased two munchkin auto close baby safety gates. They were installed today. I almost fell down the stairs because there is a bar that you have to step over to descend the stairs. I also placed on between my kitchen and dining area. Totally dangerous.

The door to the gate closes MOST of the time automatically, but sometimes does not close by itself. My son went through the gate and did not notice that it did not close automatically behind him. My 1 year old daughter fell down the stairs as a result of it not closing automatically.

The product, in the report: Munchkin Auto-Close Metal Gate, White

    Dear Sir or Madam:

I purchased a Munchkin auto close metal gate at Toys R Us in South Philadelphia, PA in or around December, 2014 and it appears to be defective.

The spring mechanism popped out of the gate while my infant was a few feet away from the gate. The spring is located in the bottom left of the gate, where the gate swivels to open and close (photos attached). A one inch screw and spacer also popped out of the gate, presumable from the upper swivel arm of the metal gate.

It was quite unusual to say the least to be drinking a cup of coffee while watching a baby gate implode. If my infant ate this spring mechanism, he would have asphyxiated or worse.

FYI: I do have photos that I can email if your would like to review them.

    Thank you.

The product, in the report: Munchkin PROTECT Auto-close safety gate (white)

RE: Munchkin PROTECT Auto-close Safety Gate

After nearly two years of regular use, the top plastic hinge of this gate cracked and began to separate, this happened on 4/23/13. The next day, 4/24/13, the hinge completely snapped, and the opening portion of the gate completely detached from its frame. If tugged, the door would just come off of the frame at this point, posing a risk of my toddler falling down the stairs (this product is listed for use on staircases). I proceeded to contact Munchkin, and they told me that because the limited one year warranty was up, there was nothing they could do.

The product, in the report: Baby Gate (auto close metal Gate)

The consumer says the gate was at the top of the stairs. The gate door broke off of the rest of the gate. The consumer says his friend’s little girl fell down the stairs. The consumer says that this gate is specifically made for using at the top or bottom of the stairs.

She contacted the manufacturer who said that there have been no other reports of gates breaking like this. She is concerned because this is the second gate that has broken off on them, with a crack in the same plastic part, which is of concern because consumer had called to report the first gate that broke, and she said they had no record of that call.

The product, in the report: White aluminum baby gate. Approx 2.5 feet high fits in a doorway.

We have the MK0006-022-REV2 Munckin Auto-Close baby gate. Last night I was in a hurry when trying to get through the gate. I lifted and pushed and was going through when the gate closed. I got caught up in the gate and broke my toe as well as bruising my foot and possibly tearing the tendons in it as well (will be seeing a podiatrist soon for evaluation). I believe that this issue was caused by the auto-closing feature in the gate. It actually locked on my leg while I was stuck in it and I had to have my husband come and help me remove it.... Not just that but when I did get caught in the gate it broke free from the wall and that could have caused me to do even greater damage to myself had I fallen over. This product is not safe.

The product, in the report: Child Safety Gate

I noticed on Munchkin Safety Gate that is installed in my home that the bottom stop to hold the gate was loose. I took a close look at it and it seemed as the the screws were loose, That’s when I noticed the screw head had popped off. I also examined the gate further and noticed the bottom hinge that was screwed to the wall was loose, that too had the screw head pop off.

Not only could a child have swallowed the screw heads but these screws leave this gate totally unsafe and leave the potential for a child to fall down stairs.

The product, in the report: Child safety gate

My wife and I have a 13 month old son (only child) and we purchased the Munchkin brand auto-close gate in February of 2012 and installed it at the bottom of the stairs in our house between two solid walls. In early September of 2012 the top hinge of the gate failed; a spring and screw fell out of the hinge and onto the floor and the gate was no longer secured. Upon inspection the plastic sleeve that holds the screw in place split for no apparent reason. If my wife had not been near by when it happened our son could have either eaten the screw or spring or pulled the gate down on himself. While reading other consumer reviews on Amazon I found that 3 out of 28 reviews described the exact same failure.

I have contacted Munchkin customer service who initially offered to replace the gate with the same model. When I argued that the design was flawed and that I did not trust the design of the auto close model they offered a similar model (easy close) which did not have a spring loaded hinge and was less likely to fail. I agreed to accept the easy close gate as a replacement and Munchkin said they would send it to me along with an extension since the easy close is slightly shorter than the auto close. After almost two weeks I received a package from Munchkin and it contains an auto close gate with no extension. I do not want the auto close gate and will be returning it and asking for a simple refund on the original purchase which I know is against Munchkin company policy.
