  1. Hospital admission

Made Jul 8, 2025, sent to the company Jul 11, 2025, published by CPSC Jul 25, 2025

The product, in the report: The Evenflo adjustable wooden baby gate is a natural wood color. It has two wooden panels with metal clasps that hold the gate together on the top and bottom.

On May 17th, 2023 around 6:20 pm, our 20 month old daughter was playing near an Evenflo adjustable wooden baby gate in our dining room. She was tossing toys over the baby gate into the kitchen. I was across the room from her and I noticed she would occasionally bite at the top of the baby gate after tossing over a toy. I didn’t think too much of it as she wasn’t doing it for very long. She was teething and put her mouth on everything, as babies and toddlers do.

She was standing next to and facing the baby gate and all of a sudden she let out a horrible scream as she fell away from the baby gate. She ran towards me with blood all over her face and neck. The baby gate was still standing, but had blood at the top near one of the metal clasps that holds the baby gate together. I knew she needed to go to the hospital right away.

Once we got her to a room at the hospital, we could see how bad her mouth was torn. The whole left side of her upper lip was ripped off, up the left side of her philtrum and away from her nose. Her cheek was torn down past the bottom of her mouth and there was another tear on her bottom lip. This exposed most of her top and bottom teeth on that side. The surgeon told us he would not be able to reattach the inch by inch section that was missing from her upper lip. There wasn’t enough blood flow to it for it to be viable. He had to close her up as well as he could to prevent infection. After the surgery, the opening of her mouth was so small. She had a hard time eating, drinking, and speaking for a while.

Our daughter’s lips were caught in the gap between one of the top metal clasps and the wooden gate panels. Her lips were pinched in the baby gate so tightly it caused significant tearing and loss of upper lip tissue and muscle. This baby gate was bought to help keep our baby safe from things she shouldn’t get into. I would have never purchased this had I known this was a possibility.

The product, in the report: Steel (mostly) locking/hinged baby gate, adjustable width, screws/bolts to walls and is rated for top-of-stairs use. See https://www.evenflo.com/baby-gates/secure-step/securestep.html?dwvar_securestep_fashion=4233052

Our 29-month-old twins regularly rattle both of our top-of-stairs “rated” Evenflo baby gates. Fortunately, someone was standing right near them when this happened, but today the plastic locking pin on one of them snapped clean off the gate. It had the appearance of being a solid piece of nylon rod with a hemispherical end, but it turns out it is hollow and therefore highly susceptible to breakage.

The product, in the report: Evenflo Top of Stairs wooden Gate - manufactured in Jan 2010 NO1050

Evenflo top of star gateand (Manufactured in 2010) was secured at the top of the stairs, in use for both children and pets. Our dog (large breed appx. 85lbs) sat down and leaned up against the gate and one of the slats broke loose and fell down the steps. The dog was large enough not to fall through but if this had been our youngest (at 11 months old) she would have fallen down the steps. This appears to be the same problem as previous gate models were having and thought the company should be aware of this.

The product, in the report: Baby gate manufactured by evenflo. Brown in color and is metal and has extandable gate and frame.

I was moving the baby gate (the whole unit as it comes the gate within its frame) from one door to the next and as I lifted it up the door came out of its hinges and fell down on my foot. I had to go to emergency room to get it x-rayed and examined to make sure no bones got broken since I could not put my foot down. I contacted the company evenflo about it and they just said sorry that it happen to you but since it’s out of warranty we cannot do anything about it. They didn’t want to help me as a consumer in anyway considering I was injured using their product and had medical bills due to their product defect and malfunction!

The product, in the report: Baby gate position and lock pressure mounted tan color wood. Model #202

I mounted the Evenflo Position and Lock baby gate in tan on my front door on July 10, 2014. My son who was 19 months old at the time, was standing at the doorway with 1 hand on the top of the gate on his tip toes peering over it when the gate dismounted (I tested this gate when I mounted it and I couldn’t shift it in the slightest bit) and my son fell onto the hard pavement outside our house. He fell hard enough to bit his tongue, bruise his face, and crack the top of the baby gate. I contacted Evenflo regarding this on [REDACTED] and they asked me to call. Today I called and was told that they probably can’t do anything to help me because even though its THEIR product its not warrantied past 90 days. That my gate was too old regardless of the fact that my son was injured on it. The side of the gate completely twisted toward the bar that locks the gate into place and the top of the gate cracked and splintered the wood completely.

The product, in the report: Top of stairs baby gate.

My 48 month old child with autism along with my 30 month old neurotypical son removed a slat on this gate. We glued it twice before a friend visiting our home told us that she believed she had the same gate replace on a recall. The children first accidentally knocked the slat out pulling on the latched gate’s slats. We glued it twice. The third time they removed the slat our friend saw it and told us of the possible recall. Each time the boys removed the slat, we caught them attempting to wriggle through the slat. The gate is at the top of four stairs that lead from the main floor of our home to the entryway where the front door is. We have been using this gate since we purchased our home in 2010. It was actually purchased in late 2009 to early 2010.

The product, in the report: Evenflo Secure Step baby gate, model 4232052

I have an Evenflo Secure Step baby gate, model 4232052. We have it at the top of our staircase. The latch that is designed to stop the gate from swinging all the way through is made of plastic and has broken on two occasions. The first time, I called Evenflo and purchased a replacement. However, several months later the replacement is cracked. I no longer want a replacement as this is clearly faulty design. The clip should be made of metal, or something more durable than plastic.

Several times, when we have swung the gate closed, the clip failed to stop it, causing the gate to open out over the staircase. We have tiled floor at the bottom of our stairs and our child could have been seriously hurt.

The product, in the report: Evenflo #202 pressure baby gate

My girlfriends daughter, her mother, my son, and I were present at my house. This injured person is my girlfriends daughter.

I’m trying to raise awareness about a product that was involved with a devastating critical injury to a toddler in Lacey WA.

About a year ago, a little girl fell down the stairs of my home during the night while the adults were asleep. She was found in the morning, unconscious. Her baby gate that was on the doorway to her bedroom when she was put to bed, was lying flat on the carpet in the morning.

She was rushed to the ER and has been in a coma for over a year. She will never walk, talk, or be the same. Most of her brain is non-functioning.

Shortly after her birth, a two pack of Evenflo #202 baby gates were bought from Toys R Us in Olympia and used continuously. After the accident, and upon examination, not just the one gate guarding her door exhibited a bent pressure pin, but the other did as well.

Evenflo claims that it’s #202 is the largest selling baby gate. They are sold virtually everywhere.

I don’t want this to happen to another child, ever. There is an alternative to the this particular model it is in the same price range ( They are both the cheapest gates on the market). The [REDACTED] gate is of the same exact design; except, the area that was bent on our Evenflo gates, allowing the little girl to get out during the night, has a re-enforced metal gusset to address this issue—thereby eliminating this issue.

I am just trying to reach as many new parents. I have pictures to better understand what I’m talking about.

The product, in the report: Home safety barrier for babies. Made of wood for brace and plastic for fence with rubber tips on the sides.

We bought Evenflo Position and Lock Gate to restrict our 8 months old baby going near the stairs. For the past 2 months, we’ve been very comfortable using it since it serves it’s purpose appropriately. But this afternoon, October 24,2011 at around 5pm, our baby was playing with this barrier and suddenly he cried. When we checked on him, his mouth is bleeding with his both teeth under is flipped upside down exposing the roots of the teeth and lacerated gums. Because of the unexpected incident, we discovered that this product is very dangerous and not suitable for a baby with a growing tooth due to the design. The top wood has a groove securing the plastic fence and it’s space in between the wood trapped the teeth of our baby who is at the stage of having a very itchy gums. We were so scared, worried and feel so helpless with our baby’s condition. With this incident, we are so unhappy with this product. We are willing to answer any question and send a picture relating to this incident.

We have an Evenflo Top of the Gate Model # 10502 for our children. Their father, who weighs only 145 pounds tripped and fell against the gate - not very hard. 3 slats broke and he fell down a few stairs. Although he is an adult, he did not lean against the gate very hard when he fell and yet the slats still broke. I see now that this item has been recalled and will get a newer safer one.

Safely concern: Top of stair gate, Evenflo Model 1556C (Aug/08)

    http://www.evenflo.com/product.aspx?id=75&pfid=114

We had had this gate for about one & a half years and have three potentially dangerous issues with this gate: broken hinges, hinges that open where the gate falls off and a locking mechanism that is so weak my dog can open it.

The gate itself is sturdy wood, however the hinges and locking hardware are poor-quality plastic. The hinges have been replaced once because they cracked, we were several day with out a gate, while waiting for parts, now we inspect them regularly & my husband just noticed they are sagging like they are going to break again soon. Also this plastic hinge doesn’t lock/snap into place as supposed to, so it easily comes open. The top of the hinge just slides up & down to cover the short plastic pin. My son, putting his feet under the gate, knocked it completely off; the gate crashed down the stairs. Luckily he somehow didn’t fall with it.

Now we have found the locking mechanism is so poor that our dog opens it with its nose. If a dog can open, certainly a toddler can.

    Evenflo Top-of-Stair™ Plus Wood Gates

I have had eleven of these gates in my house for about the last two years. Two slats have failed when a 12 month and 18 month old boy (same boy) rattled his cage. Neither incident resulted in escape or injury. I intend to replace the gates through the recall.

I intend to replace through the recall. However, when I looked into this last year after the first slat broke they said that to qualify I had to mail to them a particular piece of hardware that I did not use in my particular installations for each of the eleven gates I had. I only had three or four of these items -- how likely is it that anyone would have saved pieces of hardware from gates installed months or years ago? But in fact I DID save the boxes for most of the items but could not find this piece in each box. I will try again to see if they will accept UPC bar codes or something else for the other gates. I think in a situation such as mine they ought to consider sending me the replacement gates with return shipping boxes to return the other gates and if i don’t return them in some reasonable period of time then charge me for the new gates.
