  1. Hurt, care not known

Made May 26, 2022, sent to the company Jun 1, 2022, published by CPSC Jun 15, 2022

The product, in the report: TB25CB is designed without a clutch. The string head never stops spinning at idle. If you set the machine down, the head spins. This causes an unsafe situation for anyone that may walk close the machine. I opened case [REDACTED] with Troy-Bilt. They instructed me to take it to a service center. The tech at the service center looked up the parts schematic and found the product contains no clutch. He has never seen a product without a clutch to disengage the spinning head. I set this machine down to move a big branch and accidentally backed into the spinning head causing lacerations on my ankle. Troy-Bilt had recall # [REDACTED] issued in 2020 for the same issue. The new models with the same safety concern are being sold.

Tro-Bilt string trimmer is designed without a cluth to stop the head from spinning at idle.

The product, in the report: Troy Bilt String Trimmer 4-cycle jumpstart Model TB6044XP UPC 41CDF6PC766

Troy Built 4-cycle jumpstart TB6044XP string trimmer. While trimming weeds my string trimmer abruptly stopped, pull starter was jammed. I removed the plastic housing to find the cooling fan/ pull started mechanism has shattered. There were pieces of the fan embedded in the plastic housing and part of the aluminum cooling fin of the cylinder head was broken off.

The product, in the report: Edge your drive, walkways and flower beds quickly with the LE720 lawn edger. The hardened steel blade has an adjustale depth up to 2.5” and the large guide wheel always keeps you on a straight path. This lawn edger connects to all attachment-capable string trimmers with no tools. Model 41BJLE-C902

While utilizing the Troybuilt Trimmer Plus Edger attachment LE720 the anti-rotation screw became dislodged causing the head of the trimmer and spinning blade to move five feet disconnected from the primary edger shaft.

The product, in the report: Troy Bilt Item # 41ADZ63C766 Model TB635EC, S/N 1C157DD1012, Assembled in Mexico. Red and Black weed eater yard trimmer with interchangeable attachment heads

I purchased a Troy Bilt weed-eater in a few years ago, from Lowes in Waxahachie, TX. Troybilt item 41ADZ63C766, Model TB635EC, S/N 1A256DD1687. Upon using it a couple of seasons, the flywheel next to the starting cord broke apart while in use which is an inherent danger due to flying metal fragments that may come out of the weed eater. Thinking not much of it in 2017 I purchased another model TB635EC from the same store. Upon unboxing it and getting ready to start it, the kick out spurs that are on the metal flywheel broke on the first pull. So I returned this to the store and they replaced it with another from stock. Most recently the first week of June 2017 I was using the 3rd Troybilt unit Troybilt item # 41ADZ63C766, Model TB635EC, S/N 1C157DD1012, which is about 1 year old. When using this most recent one at full throttle, the metal flywheel broke apart immediately stopping the weed eater. Luckily no metal fragments or parts exploded from the plastic shroud. These models are inherently dangerous due to the location of the motor and flywheel being close to the operators side. In the event some metal parts did come out of the unit, one could be severely injured or impaled with flying parts.

The product, in the report: Troy Bilt Lawn Edger, Model: 25B-554H711, Serial: 1C142K50043, Some parts return as MTD parts.

PREMATURE FAILURE OF BELT GUARD. Actual in-use time was 35 - 40 hours. Belt guard (TroyBilt part #: 781-0427-0637) broke. Both flanges separated from the body of the guard leaving the drive belt exposed. The flanges are an integral part of the guard and are the means of holding the guard in place over the drive belt. It appears that a very sharp bend was used at the point where the flanges protrude from the guard. This sharp bend could not tolerate the constant vibration of the edger and failed allowing the body of the guard to separate from the flanges. This item is one of the prime safety features of this product and needs to be more durable. Judging by the number of belt guards available on [REDACTED], this seems to be a high failure item not only on this unit but others also.

The product, in the report: Troy Built Stringed Trimmer Model TB5755S 41ADT57C711

While in use, the trimmer end of a Troy Built Stringed Trimmer fell off of the shaft. Due to the high rotational velocity of the loose assembly, the assembly was propelled backwards, hitting the operators foot.

It appears that a single screw (parts list item # 19) came loose due to the wear/stretching of a hole in the trimmer shaft (parts list item # 16). Part # 16 is damaged but intact and parts #17-#35 detached from the trimmer.

I contacted the manufacturers “Level 1 tech support” (they do not have a level 2) to ask if they have seen this issue before and I also asked who I needed to speak with in order to report a potential safety issue. I was advised that they do not accept safety complaints from the consumer and I should take the parts to an authorized dealer for repair.
