The product, in the report: 25cc Two Cycle, gas powered trimmer
8/16/2022: The consumer used the trimmer for approximately 8 – 10 minutes.
The trimmer started smoking and burning, so he immediately put it on the ground and turned it off.
Upon further inspection, the clutch housing melted and emitted smoke. This is the area near the handgrip, next to the engine. Part of the main housing also melted.
8/17/2022: He called the firm the next day and was advised to take it to a local authorized service center. He was given a CASE# [REDACTED].
8/18/2022: The consumer took the trimmer to a local service company and their representative, told him that they would get back in touch after they examined the trimmer.
8/29/22 I took it to a dealer who determined that it would cost too much to fix. I took the trimmer and dealer work up sheet to Lowes. They replaced it for free. They were to send it back to the factory. Thanks

Seen by a doctor or nurse Made Jan 15, 2015, sent to the company Jan 26, 2015, published by CPSC Feb 9, 2015
The product, in the report: Craftsman Edger/Trencher used for trimming grass around sidewalks, flower beds, driveways
On approximately 07/20/2014, I finished using my Craftsman Gas-Powered Edger and put it in my garage. As I turned, my right calf came in contact with the muffler causing a significant burn for which I required medical attention. The muffler on this product projects from under the engine almost to the edge of the unit. I contacted Sears about this matter and they referred me to their insurance company representative, [REDACTED] , of Sedgewick Insurance. Sedgewick referred me to the manufacturer of the unit, MTD Products. [REDACTED] from MTD said they were not at fault because Sears has the option of having a safety shield installed on the unit, but Sears does not chose this option. Back to Sedgewick where [REDACTED] said if used properly, there is no danger of injury. He offered me a $25 Sears Gift Card, which I refused. I believe a safety shield should be required.

The product, in the report: Sears Weedwacker Model 358.791060, 32cc/1.9 cu.in. 2 Cycle
After filling the weedwacker with the proper gas/oil mix, I started it and began using. Within 3-5 minutes, I noticed gas running out the back of the product and the engine was smoking where the gas hit the hot parts of the engine. I immediately turned it off and noticed that the gas tank was empty. The next day I examined the product and found that the plastic fuel lines had disintegrated into pieces the size of grains of sand and rice, leaving the two hole where they had been now open to the engine assembly.
Contacting Sears about this, I was informed that the product was out of warranty (purchased 11/2010 and used only four times) and thus I could send it in for repair (60-80% of new product) or buy parts and repair it myself. I assured them that the product had been stored properly with gas in the tank and that there must be a design or materials flaw. They said sorry the product was out of warranty.
Clearly, I will be buying another brand replacement product, but given the danger of fire or even explosion, I felt I should report this since Sears did not either know or deem it important.

No one hurt Made Aug 15, 2012, sent to the company Aug 30, 2012, published by CPSC Sep 21, 2012
The product, in the report: Propane powered string trimmer
Purchased a LEHR string trimmer (under Sears Craftsman name brand)
After approx. 2 years of use, the high pressure (Pre Pressure regulator) propane line failed causing propane gas to escape violently creating a fire , explosive, and general safety hazard.
Attempting to order a replacement part I found this part on backorder.
Also there are numerous other complaints found via a simple google search of a simple failure.
Seen in link below
https://www.google.com/search?q=%22lehr%22+propane+leak&sugexp=chrome,mod=15&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
Finally, when the repair part arrived it came with specific replacement instructions indicative that this was a systemic problem and not an isolated event.
The severity of a failure of this nature combined with the high frequency of it happening makes this a high risk tool.
