The product, in the report: Black & Decker 13in String Trimmer/Edger. Model number LST140C Model LST140C UPC 885911487573
My wife was using the Black & Decker trimmer LST140C and pieces of line were being automatically fed at the wrong time and being cut off and striking her in the legs. It has happened 4 different times and leaves up to 1 inch cuts on her legs. I have complained to Black & Decker twice but they just offer a new product. The last 2 that we have used have done the exact same thing. They want to keep sending me new ones instead of addressing a very serious and dangerous problem with their auto feed system.

No one hurt Made Sep 22, 2019, sent to the company Jan 27, 2020, published by CPSC Feb 10, 2020
The product, in the report: 6.5 Amp 14 in. POWERCOMMAND® Electric String Trimmer/Edger with EASYFEED™ Corded, Orange
When using a Black & Decker Electric String Trimmer (Model BESTE620) there are two handles, a pistol grip controlling handle at the back and a loop handle closer to the trimming head. The angle of the loop handle controls the distance between both handles. The position of the loop handles can be adjusted by depressing a toothed button at the base of the handle where it attaches to the central rod of the trimmer. The button is a toothed cylinder that when not depressed grips teeth on the inner rim of the loop handle attachment. If you have long arms as I do, the loop handle needs to be further away from the grip handle thus angled away from the back of the trimmer. During use the loop handle would disconnect from the toothed button allowing the loop handle to rotate back and consequently dropping the trimmer motor and head to the ground. These events appeared to happen randomly. After several incidents use of the trimmer was terminated for concern that the rapidly spinning trimmer string spool head could cause damage especially if it were to separate from the main part of the trimmer. In these incidents, the trimming string broke off and required the spooling mechanism to be partially disassembled and the string recovered. Purchased from amazon (https://amzn.to/30g4R7h). An enquiry to Black & Decker produced no results. The trimmer will be returned to amazon.com.

First aid Made Jul 19, 2018, sent to the company Jul 27, 2018, published by CPSC Aug 10, 2018
The product, in the report: Black+Decker 14 in. Corded Electric Weed Trimmer and Edger Straight shaft model.
I was operating a Black+Decker GH900 weed trimmer and edger. I had been operating the equipment on the incident day for approximately 1.5hrs in the “edger” mode. When I switched the equipment to the trimmer mode the rpm increased as designed but the auto-line-feed system unraveled the entire remaining (approximately 10 feet) line in an uncontrolled manner. This caused the line to exceed the protection of the guard and break off in the direction of the operator (myself). A few pieces struck my leg causing non-serious lacerations. No professional medical treatment was needed, only first aid cleaning and bandaging.
I have owned this equipment for approximately one year. The auto-feed-system is known for using a lot of line but this was the first incident that failed to stop feeding such a large amount, bypassing the guard, and that caused a noticeable injury.

The product, in the report: Black & Decker GH11100 String Trimmer
I have been using a Black & Decker GH1000 string trimmer for a couple of years. On numerous occasions it has damaged objects close to the vegetation being trimmed due to the string releasing unexpectedly. the damage is caused by both the sudden increase in the length of the string and the pieces of string cut off by the trimmer blade. This happens when I am actually trimming or if the head is raise to re-position, in both the horizontal and vertical positions. I have received numerous small cuts to my legs from flying string fragments over the past couple or years. I finally decided to see if anyone else was having this problem and found recall for earlier models. My trimmer has an orange head but still spews fragments while being used. I have decide to replace it before it does anymore damage.

The product, in the report: Black and Decker Grasshog XP model GH1000 trimmer/edger
Several years ago my garage had burned and the insurance sent a replacement trimmer the my damaged one, the unit they sent me was the Grasshog XP model GH1000 trimmer/edger. I did not realize there had been a recall on it the until the other day when I was looking to purchase a replacement spool and found articles on the internet of injuries caused by this piece of equipment. While I have no sustained any injuries myself, the spool and spool cover of the unit have come off in use, as well as the pieces of the trimmer string. Is there some sort of exchange or refund? I don’t really want to be using a dangerous unit.

The product, in the report: Black and Decker 6.5 amp string trimmer.
The Black and Decker 6.5 amp string trimmer is dangerous. The mechanism that feeds the string malfunctions and sends out a stream of string. Pieces of string are propelled quite a distance by the device and cause quite a sting when hitting one’s legs. The pieces of string could easily damage one’s eyes.

Emergency room Made Aug 23, 2013, sent to the company Sep 3, 2013, published by CPSC Sep 17, 2013
The product, in the report: black & decker 24” 36 volt lithium ion battery cordless hedge trimmer model # LHT2436
was using a new black and decker cordless hedge trimmer 24” 36 volt lithium ion battery and reached in behind the guard instead of in front, where it is safe, to grab the handle, because the guard is way too small in width. it doesn’t even go as wide as the motor or handle, and is too close to the handle to prevent what I had done anyway.
Just seems that the guard is pretty much useless. got lucky and only mangled my finger “pads” (index, middle and ring fingers on my left hand) instead of cutting them off, because I was reaching for the bottom part of the handle and my fingers were parallel to the blades. Ended up with about 10 stitches in my ring finger and about 30 stitches in my middle finger. index finger was cut, but no stitches.
NEEDS WIDER GUARD!
Thanks,

Seen by a doctor or nurse Made Jun 20, 2013, sent to the company Jun 28, 2013, published by CPSC Jul 15, 2013
The product, in the report: Red Black & Decker Trimmer/Edger
June 3, 2013:
I was preparing lawn equipment prior to using it. This incident occurred while plugging in and securing the power cord in the B & D GH3000 trimmer. The unit has a handle to use during operation.
The additional handle is where the power cord is inserted and secured in cord retainer, both housed in the same area as the trigger switch. I was in the process of inserting cord and securing it in the cord retainer. As I attempted to push the electrical cord into the cord retainer, the cord bumped the trigger switch and activated the trimmer.
It is not possible to secure the cord in cord retainer without using two hands. One to hold the handle and one to pull cord through. It is not possible to insert cord into handle and pull back in order for it to secure in cord retainer. One hand needs to hold handle while other hand needs to secure cord to cord retainer.
The trigger switch should not have been housed in the same area as cord retainer. There is not enough room to effectively attach cord without hitting the trigger with a hand or the electrical cord.
Upon activation, the trimmer seriously damaged my foot.

The product, in the report: Black and orange weed trimmer with 12 inch wide trimming area powered by a cordless 9.6v-18v Black & Decker 9- Hour battery pack. model number is NST2118 12” 18V cordless trimmer & edger
I went out yesterday to use my lawn trimmer first and then I was going to cut the grass. The Black & Decker battery powered lawn trimmer was purchased at Home Depot in May of last year and had worked fine. However, yesterday it started fine and I was trimming around my fence when it started to make strange noises like it needed more line. So I tapped it on the ground to lengthen the line, and all of a sudden something shot out of the bottom and hit my leg. I stopped and saw my leg looked bruised where it hit. I checked the bottom and saw the line was a little long, but figured it would shorten as I continued trimming. Moments later something flew out and hit my other leg and it bled a little. I held the trimmer in the air and started it again--completely off the ground. Another thing shot out and hit me in the cheek (it could have been my eye). I removed the spool and took a look and everything looked normal. So I reinstalled the spool and tried one more time. Something shot out and hit my leg again. All the hits really hurt. I stopped using it.
Then I came in to get the lawn mower and to put a cold cloth on my legs where they were hit. I glanced down and saw that all the hits were bleeding profusely. I quickly wiped the blood and put [REDACTED] and bandages on all the wounds. I now have four bandages on my legs where I apparently got hit in four places, not three. I don’t know what the problem is, but you shouldn’t have to dodge shrapnel when trimming your lawn.

I purchased a Black & Decker Grasshog XP GH1000 Type 1 14” trimmer/edger from Home Depot in the spring of 2007. During routine weekly use of the unit, the spool cap would come off. I thought nothing of it since I had never owned a trimmer/edger prior to this one. Finally, a couple of weeks ago, the spool cap finally broke and flew off. No one was injured. I went on line looking for a replacement part when I noticed there was a safety recall on this unit.

The product, in the report: Electric 14” string trimmer, black and orange with orange cap.
I have repeatedly gotten lacerations when using my Black and Decker GH1000 string grass trimmer. The lacerations have been due to pieces of line breaking off and becoming airborne when edging. The line also has a tendency to get caught on fence posts etc creating a backlash that also causes laceration. I’ve not had to have stitches yet, but the cuts are deep and nasty.
My model is not part of the 2009 recall, although it has the same issues.

The product, in the report: Black & Decker Grasshog String Trimmer
Caller purchased a Black & Decker GH1000 Grasshog XP String Trimmer/Edger one year ago and has had problems from date of purchase through today with the spool and string flying out from the trimmer. No one at her home has been injured. This is the same issue that caused the Black & Decker GH1000 recall of those with date codes 200546 through 200645 on release# 09-294. This caller’s date code is 20084758 which is more recent than those. Caller is going to pursue repair, instruction and/or replacement; however she had only a one year warranty which just ran out. She would like this warranty extended to obtain repair at manufacturer expense.

The product, in the report: Black and Decker Grasshog XP Weed Trimmer / Edger GH1000 Type 4
Bought the Electric Black and Decker string trimmer brand new. As soon as the string wore out, I replaced it as it recommends, following instructions. It has never worked since, and has cut both my legs, and face from the malfunctioning string holder. Thinking I had replaced the string wrong, I tried it carefully again, only to experience the same thing, with dangerous string flying every which way.

The product, in the report: Black and Decker GH700 Grass Hog Weedeater/Trimmer Orange and Black in color.
Black and Decker GH 700 Trimmer being used in my yard. The trimmer does not cut the string properly, and when it does, it is at full throttle and then throws large pieces of string. The long pieces of string are thrown causing lacerations to my legs, as well as my son’s legs.
I made Black and Decker aware of the problem along with pictures documenting the incidents, and they completely dismissed it.
