The product, in the report: 2.0 HP Deep Well Submersible Pump kit. The unit consists of a polished stainless steel cylindrical pump body (approx. 4” diameter) and an external grey/black plastic wall-mounted control box. The kit includes a pre-attached 131-foot blue “flat jacket” power lead. The control box contains internal start/run capacitors and a thermal overload switch. The product is marketed for water extraction from wells up to 443 feet deep.
The product, a high-powered submersible well pump, experienced a catastrophic thermal failure that resulted in the melting and decomposition of the control box components. The failure is due to a fundamental design defect: the unit is marketed for deep-well use (up to 443 feet of head), yet it is kitted with an undersized, low-gauge electrical lead (14 or 16 gauge) that is physically and mathematically incapable of supporting the amperage draw over that distance. This creates a significant voltage drop, turning the electrical connection into a heating element. The resulting heat was sufficient to fuse internal capacitors and melt the plastic housing, creating an imminent fire hazard to the residential structure and the surrounding high-risk forest zone.
