The product, in the report: Electric Leaf Blower
I was using our Toro Ultra Electric Blower, model 51619 today, when I noted a major decrease in blower speed (I had NOT moved the speed control) and felt a small burn on my right arm. Just after that, I noted smoke coming from the male electrical connector at the end of the power cord tailpiece. I immediately stopped using the blower and came into the house to contact Toro via phone. The Toro agent with whom I spoke directed me to a nearby repair center, which I called and was told that there would be an almost $40.00 charge just to initially examine the unit.

The product, in the report: 60V MAX* Electric Battery Brushless Leaf Blower
I am writing regarding the Toro cordless leaf blower, product number 51820.
I have used it problem free for almost two years until the week of 8/8/2022. When holding down a “turbo boost” button the blower has, one I’ve used many times before, it began to lightly shock my thumb. I read that humid conditions can lead to static shocks with leaf blowers so I stopped using it and tried later in the week, and it did the same thing any time I used the turbo boost button. Something was malfunctioning or defective, so I followed the manufacturers guidelines for an item under warranty and took it to a certified service dealership. After 2.5 weeks I got the blower back, was told that there was nothing wrong with the product, that plastic is not capable of conducting electricity so they are certain I could not have been shocked, and that it was likely static due to weather conditions which is outside of their control. I tried the product again when I got home and once again was shocked every time I tested the turbo boost.
I called Toro customer service to discuss the issue, and lack of service provided for a defective product that is capable of causing harm, and after 20 minutes of describing the issue with the product, the means in which it was handled by their service team, and options available, the only other option available was to try a different service dealer. I tried one more authorized service dealership for Toro and was called the following day to be told they do not service electrical motors. I tried leaving a review on the Toro website to explain what has happened with this product, the way it delivers a shock, the difficulties obtaining service with the unit still under warranty, and the lack of options available or care provided by the Toro customer service line, but my post was moderated and deleted. I tried calling Toro again, and the only option once more was to take it to a dealer.
I decided to report this product, as I believe that it is capable of causing bodily harm by way of a wiring defect that can shock the user, and Toro has shown no care or interest in resolving the matter.

Toro leave blower model #51545 serial#1038968 I was blowing leaves off patio steps when the impeller (fan) exploded and shot out plastic at high velocity (sounded like a shot gun explosion). Knocked my metal water bottle right off the step left dents in the metal bottle. Plastic shot out everywhere. Fortunately no injury, but could have caused serious injury if it ricocheted or if anyone was in the way.

The product, in the report: Toro Ultra Blower/vacuum model 51619 UPC 021038516196
Toro Ultra Blower/Vacuum model # 51619 does not turn off. The blower/vacuum does not turn off when the switch is rotated to the off position. I reported this to Toro and they said to bring it to an authorized service center which I did. The technician confirmed that the blower/vacuum will not turn off when the switch is rotated to the off position. The only way to turn it off is to unplug it. The tech also said that he has an identical model with the same problem (doesn’t turn off). Hence, this appears to be a defect rather than an isolated incident. The tech said it will take at least a month for the warranty to be processed. This model has a 2 year warranty and it is only 8 months old. I was not injured, but i can’t use the blower/vaccum because the on/off switch doesn’t work.

The product, in the report: Toro electric leaf blower model 51586.
We had a light snow today and I took out my Toro electric leaf blower model 51586 to clear the snow off of my car. I’ve done this many times and it works great. I plugged it in, turned it on and second later it violently exploded with a very loud bang. The impeller came apart and ripped through the blower housing. Parts of the housing and impeller hit me in the chest and face. Fortunately I was wearing a ski mask, winter coat and glasses and was not injured.
I had purchased the blower from Home Depot around 2001. I was not aware this model had been recalled in 2007. The potential for injury in this type of product failure is very high and I feel that Toro should have done more to alert customers of the recall. The recall section on their web site does not list this recall.

The product, in the report: Toro brand electric leaf blower/vacuum models 51617 and 51591.
I have had two Toro brand electric leaf blowers overheat at the extension cord connection to the point where the broad prong of the plug gets so hot it melts into the extension cord. In both cases I was using the proper recommended gauge of extension cord (14 gauge, 100’), was using the blowers for less than 5 minutes of continuous use and 10 minutes in total, and was using their cord lock system to keep the extension cord secure. I believe there is a defect in Toro leaf blowers that creates an unsafe electrical arc or something even when the blower is properly plugged in. This could cause a fire. In my opinion the blowers with this malfunction should be recalled.

I was using the Toro leaf blower per recommended instructions. My hair was tied back, and I had a hat on. The blower inlets sucked in my hat and hair, hitting me in the head resulting in a concussion and 5 staples, significant hair loss and neck injury as well. The unit was flush to my head, the fire department had to be called to open the unit so I could obtain medical attention. There was no safety feature on this unit to disengage the motor when a foreign object enters, nor did it have a safety feature for automatic shut off. The unit continued to run and hit me in the head until my son came to unplugg the unit during the incident.

The product, in the report: Toro Super Blower/vacuum Model 51618, black in color. Hand held electric leaf blower
While using a Toro Leaf Blower for about 15 minutes I began to smell an electrical overheat aroma. Before I could turn the Blower off, Smoke bellowed from the electric motor and the blower plug began to melt. The product was a Toro Super Blower / Vacuum, model 51618 S/N 316103305. I had purchased the product in November 2016. Numerous calls to Toro failed to result in any service being done.
I feel this blower is internally defective and should be investigated.

The product, in the report: Toro Rake and Vac - Model No. 51585
This report is regarding a Toro leaf blower which caught fire without any human interaction with it for the previous 36 hours. The fire was spontaneous.
I had bought this leafblower in September 2014 from Lowe’s. The fire occurred on October 13, 2015. So the blower was relatively new.
Early on October 12, 2015 I used the blower to clear off my back patio and walkways. They are concrete. As it was Fall with continuing leaves falling, I left the blower plugged in and sitting on its coiled extension cord on the concrete walkway, underneath a nearby redwood tree. Weather was clear and warm for those and following days.
About 30 hours later I was away from home when a neighbor called me to tell me that there was “a large fire” underway in my back yard and that I should get there immediately. When I returned, two neighbors had broken the gate to my yard to gain access and had extinguished two fires with a garden hose. One was the blower itself, the other was in the redwood tree above. They were alerted to the fire in my back yard by a pillar of dense, black smoke about 50 feet high.
Damaged were the blower, its extension cord, the concrete walkway, the adjoining railroad tie wall and the overhanging redwood tree. The blower was a pile of burned plastic surrounding the metal of the blower motor, with the protruding nozzle not fully burned. The redwood tree had several lower branches wholly burned; the fire had been spreading upward into the tree and its two neighbors before the fire was extinguished.
I phoned Toro to report the fire. They were responsive, having a “Senior Paralegal” phone me. I then dealt solely with her over the coming weeks. She and Toro were very forthcoming in reimbursing me for the damages incurred -- $650. I am satisfied with this reimbursement.
However, in the course that first phone call, I asked the paralegal if Toro would be reporting this fire to the CPSC. She seemed startled at that question and didn’t answer for several seconds. She then stammered out “Well, why should we?”
I then told her that the CPSC kept databases of all such hazardous consumer product problems, and building that database depended upon knowledge of such events. She tried to deflect this by saying that “Of course, Toro will track incidences and inform the CPSC if we find a pattern of problems with a product”.
I told her that I would be reporting the incident even if Toro did not. She asked “Why?” I told her that this fire did result in minor property damage, could have resulted in the major loss of my house by fire if not taken care of by neighbors, and could actually could have caused a loss of life.
So I am reporting this.
Two other things that the Toro representative told me raised my concerns. First she tried to make it seem like leaving the blower plugged in was a major mistake on my part. I told her that even at that moment I had at least 15 devices in my house plugged into power outlets. Products needed to not ignite when plugged in to AC outlets.
The second was when I told her I had left the blower inside my garage at times, also plugged in. She seemed surprised a blower would be inside a structure. I told her that I, and countless others, used their products to blow out garages.
My belief is that the fire was caused when the blower spontaneously turned on, overheated, and then ignited. About three feet down the adjoining wall you can see soot marks where the blower nozzle had been blowing soot while running.

The product, in the report: Toro Leaf Blower and Vacumn Model #51575
I was using my Toro Model 51575 Leaf Blower/Vacumn for yard cleanup on 10/29/15 as shown in the operating manual when it essentially exploded. The impeller inside flew apart, the motor came loose and pieces of the impeller penetrated through the exterior housing of the leaf blower. At the time I was holding it against my thighs and the impact felt like I was hit by two large rubber bands on the inside of each thigh. If I had been holding it a couple inches high (crotch level) I would still be vomiting blood (as any guy who has been hit with a baseball in the crotch can attest). If the pieces of the impeller had hit me it would have neutered me. Laugh if you will but it wouldn’t be funny if it happened to you. I reported it to [REDACTED] at Toro and he took the report. He told me his boss wanted to talk to me and would call me back in an hour or so. He referred to his boss as a “her”. After waiting around much of the afternoon without being called, I’m not happy. I narrowly averted a serious injury and then I was stood up on my return phone call. [REDACTED] gave me a case [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Toro Ultra Blower Vac (Leaf Blower)
I purchased a new Toro Ultra Blower, Model 51599, Serial # 311384699. I was having trouble getting it to stay on, as the connection to the internal plug was making poor contact. The second time I used it, the blower stopped, started to smolder and smoke started coming out of the plug, with the plug showing signs that it was beginning to melt. This item was made in Mexico it says on the piece. Obviously it was not put together properly and poses both a fire hazard as well as a danger to the user.

The product, in the report: Leaf Blower/Vac, Toro Super Blower (black), double insulated, UL listing 46N3
The product did not retain its power connection securely during usage, resulting in intermittent arcing (and intermittent operation) due to the loose connection, which lead to a buildup of carbon on one prong of the connection, overheating, and an eventual electrical fire.

The product, in the report: Toro Leaf Blower/Vacuum Ultra w/ adjustable, variable speed
While I was blowing leaves in my backyard, a burning smell began to come from the electric Toro Ultra Blower/Vacuum (fully adjustable speed) that I was using. I turned the blower knob to the off position, and set it down on our concrete porch.
As I was going to unplug the cord, the blower burst into flames from the inside top of the motor housing. I ran to turn on the garden hose and dowse the fire. It was very difficult to put it out, and thick, black smoke billowed from the blower continuously. The circuit breaker (GFCI) tripped and shut off the electricity to the unit. The result can be seen in the pictures that I’ve emailed previously.

The product, in the report: Toro Electric Leaf Blower with metal impellar color Red with black plastic attachments
I purchased the Toro leaf blower from Home Depot. The first time I used it, the blower caught fire. I had secured the extension cable as instructed in the instructions by wrapping it around the handle. The blower worked fine for about 5 minutes and them smoke began pooring out of the cable connection and machine. Upon noticing this I turned the unit off. It smelled very strongly of burnt plastic. Since I used these types of machines for many years with the same extension cord, this was a real fire hazard. I never had this happen before. I also contacted Toro online to file a complaint.

The product, in the report: Toro ultra blower. Model 51599 - 120 volts. Item is still available on the Toro web site.
I was using my Toro model 51599 Ultra Blower to clean grass from my side walk. I purchased the unit from Sears on 10/25/2010. The unit’s electric plug fused to the extention cord it was plugged into. This present a clear electrical hazard and a potiential fire hazard for the homeowner using this item.

My wife was blowing out our garage and driveway when the Toro leaf blower she was using began to spark and melt the plastic eventually catching fire. After noticing the smoke and smell she was able to turn off the machine and unplug it preventing further damage although in doing so it nearly burned her.
