The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: Sears Electric Variable Speed Electric Blower/Vacuum. 12amp, 220MPH/360CFM

I purchased the Sears Craftsman Leaf Blower/Vacuum in the summer of 2012. The next fall, in 2013, while using the blower, fire started to come out of the unit. I quickly unplugged it, and the fire subsided. My son was using the unit and suffered minor burns to his hand. I took the unit to the Sears store I purchased it from, and they said I must have been using a defective electrical cord. This was not the case, the cord I was using was in perfect working order, and has not given me any problems using it for other appliances such as a power washer or hedge trimmer. Since my blower was over 1 year old, they said it was also off of warranty (by about 2 months). I just received a safety recall notice in the mail describing the exact problem I experienced, however, my model number doesn’t fall into the same range as the ones in the recall. I just want to report this because it is the same issue described in the recall notice and the potential for a more severe burn outcome than we experienced.

The product, in the report: Not[REDACTED] brand but sold by Sears Home Store and identified by store owner as Model No 138.74899 which is a 12 AMP ELECTRIC BLOWER/MULCHER WITH METAL IMPELLER. Blower was returned to Willmar Sears store 11/23/12 with original box and notified of injury and potential danger of machine. Consumer left her phone number with request that Sears management contact her for additional information; no contact from Sears occurred. On 3/23/13 Consumer returned to store to retrieve leaf blower for information for this report and was told by owner it had been thrown out while cleaning the back of the store. Owner provided the the leaf blower model number but no other information. Consumer has receipt from credit card company but no other documentation.

On Nov. 21, 2012 Consumer was using an electric Sears brand leaf blower (purchased Oct. 6, 2012) believed to be 12 AMP ELECTRIC BLOWER/MULCHER WITH METAL IMPELLER, Model No. 138.74899. (The brand was not [REDACTED].) As Consumer started to move blower from right hand to her left, the blower motor sound suddenly changed and was described as starting to “slip” or “skip.” Almost immediately (with the blower about two inches from her left hand, while still held in her right hand), the shield shattered and seriously injured Consumer’s left hand. The injury required eleven stitches to the middle and ring fingers. The injury was described in the orthopedic hand surgeon’s notes as “Crush laceration of left middle and ring pulp tissues with nail plates intact.”

The product, in the report: Electric Blower / Vacuum

Motor Impellor broke on a Sears Craftsman electric blower, Model nmber 138.748270, Sears part number 100-9068. When I tried to order a new part, Sears parts told me that they could not sell the part as it had been recalled by the vendor, Toro. Checking your site, the Sears website and Toro’s website, I can find no notice of recall or alert to the public of the danger this part could produce. Sears exchanged my blower for a new one.
