The product, in the report: Ryobi 18V blower
Ryobi 18V Battery powered blower. Model P21081VNM, Purchased at Home Depot turned on Blower and it sounded like a rock being struck by a lawnmower - The fan blades shredded, with pieces shooting out of the sides hitting me in the legs. I am super glad that I was not wearing my shorts when this happened. Pretty lucky that the only damages were to the blower.

Not sure why this happened, but assume the product is defective and unsafe.

Hurt, care not known Made May 23, 2025, sent to the company May 29, 2025, published by CPSC Jun 12, 2025
The product, in the report: Dimensions: H 16.33 in, W 7.27 in, D 36.15 in
On May 8, 2024, I purchased a brand-new Ryobi 40V leaf blower (Model#: RY40407VNM) from my local Home Depot in Chubbuck, ID. Within the first 30 days, I requested a warranty exchange due to a defect (the handle delivered pulsing shocks to my hand when used on high-power mode). However, due to limited stock, the replacement unit I received was visibly worn and had the same issue as the original blower.
After two exchanges for the exact same shock defect issue, I checked Home Depot’s reviews for this model and found at least two other customers reporting the same issue with the handle delivering shocks. Given this recurring defect, I am now seeking a third exchange, from the same issue, however I am seeking an equivalent alternative model.
Today, May 23, 2025, at approximately 11:00 AM MST, I contacted Ryobi customer service. I was transferred twice before being directed to submit a product safety callback request, but was informed that they could not guarantee a turnaround time for the callback, not even an estimated timeframe.
Additionally, I am concerned about the potential safety risks this defect may pose to individuals with pacemakers or other implanted medical devices. The pulsing electrical shocks from the handle could interfere with these devices, potentially leading to serious health complications. Given the nature of this issue, I strongly urge Ryobi to investigate the problem further and provide a definitive resolution.

The product, in the report: Ryobi Gas powered Jet Fan Blower. Handheld blower.
I was using my Ryobi Gas Jet Fan blower to dry my car after washing it. I was wear a hooded sweatshirt and the strings on the hood got sucked into the fan as I was drying the vehicle. It sucked the hoods strings very quickly into the machine which caused my neck to jerk quickly towards the machine and a severe “rub burn” occurred to my neck from the strings being pulled so quickly. It also briefly strangulated me from the strings tying around my neck until I was able to shut the machine and pull out the strings.

The product, in the report: Ryobi 8amp jet fan electric hand held blower.. green and black. EU15401D170001 RY42102
Using my Ryobi 8amp jet fan electric blower, only used for blowing out the cob webs and leaves out of the garage and off of the driveway probably once every 2 months, I plugged it in and noticed it wasn’t sounding right nor was it blowing near as strong as usual.. I was just about to shut it off, and one of the blades flew out of the end hitting the top of my foot.. After shutting off and unplugging, I looked in the end where the fan is and a fan blade had broken off, and another was cracked... I could smell it burning and I could see sparks. Right as I was shutting it off.

The product, in the report: Ryobi leaf blower. 2 speed.
I’m using a Ryobi blower. They had a recall in the past because the fan was breaking off and could come out of the front or back of the product and cause injury. I was sent a replacement after being notified of the recall. Now the replacement is blowing out pieces of the fan. I was using the product today and a very sharp piece flew out of the front and the blower is making a grinding sound. It’s unsafe to use.

The product, in the report: Ryobi jet fan leaf blower, green and black with clear air tube Model P21081
blower P21081. This was unit was a replacement for my original unit in which the fan blade broke and ejected from both ends, which a previous model with the same style fan blade was recalled for over 10000 units. I was told by the customer service at Ryobi that they are needed me to discontinue use since it’s a safety issue. It took about 3 weeks to have a new unit in my hands. Now it’s been less then 6 months and a piece of the fan blade broke off and bounced back to the back of my neck, thankfully I had a hooded sweater on which blocked actual skin contact. When dealing with this issue before the replacement unit was shipped I was assured the fan was updated and the fan blade issue was resolved

The company was contacted and he was advised that they would pick up the blower and provide a replacement which he feels that might be covering up the evidence. He is concerned that the company is aware of the problem but not addressing the safety of the product.

I had previously received a recall notification (dated March 2, 2017) on March 21, 2017. I called on March 22, 2017 as per the notice for instructions to return the defective product. Recording informed me of high volume of calls, so I submitted a written message on the website asking they email me instructions for returning the defective product. I received a standard response on March 23, 2017 asking for patience and they will get back with me. I did not receive a response so I sent a follow up written message on March 25, 2017, and I received the same standard written response on March 28, 2017. I never did receive an response from Ryobi or, One World Tecnologies, Inc. to return the defective product.
I had used the product to blow debris off my patio. Om June 8, 2018 when I went to use the device, the moment I turned it on, it exploded send fan parts in multiple directions. I immediately turned it off and set the device down and disconnected the electrical power. No injuries were sustained fortunately.

While using the Ryobi 18v jet fan blower, Model #P2108, S/N EU16285D150129, the blower fan shattered, discharging shards of the fan from both ends of the blower. Ryobi has a current recall on similar blowers for the same problem. When contacted, Ryobi refused to replace the blower stating the it was not covered under the recall, despite the fact that it is the exact same issue. The offered to repair the blower, however this will simply return the blower to its original state, with risk of shattering again and causing injury.

The product, in the report: Gas powered RYOBI JET FAN BLOWER MODEL #: RY25AXB
The RYOBI JET FAN BLOWER MODEL #RY25AXB has an adjustable strap that can be used one of two ways - it can either be used over the shoulder or cross body. It allows for you to adjust the length to the operators height and musculature. I have had the product for one year and have used the shoulder harness/strap on several occasions and usually used it cross body. The last time I used the product, I simply used the strap as a shoulder strap and I am glad I did. When I was working in the yard, the tail end of the adjustable shoulder strap got caught in the intake and sheered the leaf blower right off my arm causing lacerations to my hand between my index finger and thumb. The engine immediately shut off however, had I used it as a cross body strap I could have easily been strangled when the piece got tangled in the intake. I am lucky that I only suffered lacerations. I was told that I would get a call from the safety team as well as a supervisor on Monday (today) and never got one. I called and explained what happened and was told it would take 3-5days for someone to contact me instead of the call expected on Monday. Someone finally contacted me on Monday at 4pm when I was not available. There doesn’t seem to be much concern on the part of the manufacturer to resolve the issue so I found this website and hope to get the word out. This could have ended up much worse had I used the strap as a cross body strap instead of simply over my shoulder.

The plastic fan inside my Ryobi Cordless Jet Fan Blower, Mod. P2108, Ser No. EU 16192D150206 broke, which caused the fan blades to be discharged from the front end of the blower tube. Luckily, no-one was near when this failure occurred.
I’ve contacted Ryobi Customer Service and filed a warranty claim. They in turn have forwarded the claim to the Ryobi “Safety” Dept who are supposed to handle the claim.
I’m contacting the CPSC because the same circumstances have resulted in the recall of a similar Ryobi blower. The Ryobi [REDACTED], Mod [REDACTED] has been recalled, Recall No. [REDACTED]. The reason given in the CSPC recall notice is: “ The plastic fan inside the electric blowers can break causing the fan blades to be discharged from either end of the blower tube. The product, in the report: Ryobi One+ 18-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless Jet Fan Leaf Blower (Model # P2108, Serial # EU16291D080162)
Dear Consumer Products Safety Commission:
On July 5th I sent Ryobi Tools the following email:
Tonight July 5, 2017 my wife was operating our Ryobi One+ 18-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless Jet Fan Leaf Blower (Model # P2108, Serial # EU16291D080162) that we bought at Home Depot in October of 2016 when the orange plastic fan inside the unit disintegrated into pieces which discharged through the housing and the electric motor started smoking. My wife immediately threw it down and ran. To say the least, she was shaken up, but fortunately not seriously injured. I have been a New Jersey attorney for over 35 years and can tell you this is definitely a defective product - for the exact same reasons as the electric one you previously recalled (MODEL [REDACTED]). You are on Notice, and this defective product should be recalled immediately before anyone gets injured by flying fan pieces or the electric motor catching fire or lithium battery exploding as a result. I just called this in to your 800-860-4050 # (Refer to Customer # [REDACTED]) and your representative told me to take it to a repair center in Somerville or Bound Brook be repaired. That is not acceptable! For the same reasons as you’ll see below with your other recall, I demand a replacement; or a full refund for our cost of the blower, the 2 lithium batteries, and the battery charger. I checked in April or May and this unit was NOT of the Model # or in the range of serial #s of blowers being recalled. See Recall Date: March 2, 2017, Recall Number: [REDACTED], One World Technologies Recalls Electric Blowers Due to Laceration Hazard. But I now see that they were being recalled for the same defect.
“Hazard: The plastic fan inside the blower can break causing the fan blades to be discharged from either end of the blower tube, posing a laceration hazard. Remedy: Replace Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled electric blowers and contact One World Technologies, Inc. for a free replacement.” [REDACTED]
Please confirm to me though your Safety Department whether I am to receive a replacement leaf blower or a refund; and how this leaf blower product defect is being addressed.
Thank you. [REDACTED]
_______________________________
Because this defect has already caused personal injuries in their electric cord model of the exact same design, and because I’m receiving no response, I have called Ryobi numerous times only to be told by their Customer Service people that my complaint is at the Products Safety Department in a stack of complaints and will be tended to on an “as received basis which should be in 10 to 14 business days”. They refused to escalate it nor allow me to talk to anyone in their Safety Department. This is irresponsible and outrageous. I ask that you folks contact them and request that they recall this product before more people get injured.
Thank you.

I was using the blower to clean up the yard of dead leaves and other debris when the fan blade suddenly shattered and the broken pieces sprayed out of the blower end. Other broken pieces remained lodged in the blower housing. The blower was obviously no longer usable.

The product, in the report: Corded Electric Leaf Blower
While using the Ryobi jet blower to clear a patio of leaves, the orange plastic impeller made a popping noise, shattered into several pieces, and ejected the broken pieces out of the end of the blower at high velocity. Fortunately, nobody was near the downstream air blast. If someone had been nearby, the plastic pieces could have caused serious injury.

The product, in the report: Ryobi RY42102, electric blower
The plastic impeller inside made a popping noise and literally exploded into many pieces as so as I turned it on. This was a new item I purchased and this happened on the third use. The sharp Plastic pieces flew out of the blower all over the place at a high speed and could have seriously injured anyone standing within 15 feet of where I was using it (however no one was near).

The product, in the report: Ryobi 40V Cordless Blower Model # RY40411
I have a Ryobi 40V cordless blower (Model # RY40411). When I was done using it, I put it away in an outdoor closet. About 10 minutes later, I heard a exhaust type of noise inside my house. After a few minutes of trying to identify the source of the noise, it became apparent that the blower started on its own. As I went outside to investigate, the noise stopped. I then opened my closet door and discovered that the Ryobi was on fire.
