How badly anyone was hurt

  • No one hurt 2 CPSC: Incident, No Injury

As each report says it, in short words; CPSC’s own words are under each.

The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

Made May 25, 2017, sent to the company Aug 16, 2017, published by CPSC Aug 30, 2017

The product, in the report: Leaf Blower

This consumer was using his electric leaf blower to blow leaves out from under his hood when there was a large bang sound then a kick feeling then the nozzle fell off the end of the blower and went into the engine compartment of his vehicle. There are twelve veins and when he opened the blower he saw that one had blown off. He was not injured. He is reporting this incident as an injury hazard. The nozzle could have gone outward or upward depending upon thrust or position and injured the user or persons standing nearby. The caller has not contacted the manufacturer and said that he may contact them.

The product, in the report: McCulloch Gas Backpack Blower Model BL30 S/N 08 09003258

Purchased McCulloch Gas Backpack Blower, Model BL30, S/N 0809003258 at Sears 11/26/2010. Used only 6 times, but have had multiple issues that are safety related. First, and continuing problem is the gas cap fails after prolonged exposure (weeks?) to gas/fuel mixture in the tank. The threads no longer seal and the cap won’t stay tight. Mfg explained that there is an additive in the gasoline that is causing the cap to fail. I have 3 different caps furnished by the mfg that leak. The last time I asked them for a new tank, but in trying to replace the tank, the torx screws holding the blower frame to the engine were stuck on so tight that the substandard torx heads stripped. I did not accomplish the tank replacement, gave up, and reassembled the blower. It still works correctly since I once again replaced the gas cap. I now have 3 non-function gas caps and fully expect the new one to fail the next time I go to use the blower after it is exposed to the fuel mix.

My second complaint is that one of the rubber isolator bolts devulcanized from the metal, leaving the motor separating from the backpack and just flapping. I asked for multiple replacements since the bolts appear substandard as well.
