The product, in the report: Motion Activated Outdoor Wall Lantern, item #253849 (see also box photos attached)

I am writing today with a report of a product sold to consumers which I believe is quite unsafe. My opinion is based on my Electrical Engineering training (B.S. with honors, Pennsylvania EIT certification on the way to PE status), as well as common sense.

A few years ago, I visited Lowes’ hardware store in Homestead, PA and purchased an ETL- and UL-listed Portfolio (Lowes’-owned brand) outdoor wall lantern, item #253849. This contained within it a UL-listed 2SW9 Lampholder (socket base) stamped with the code “E230757 JHE26 JINHAI ZHEJIANG” rated for 250V, 660W. On the first occasion when I needed to change the bulb (very recently, because I used a CFL), I attempted to unscrew the bulb from the socket. I then found that whatever was supposed to hold the socket in place was not really there. Thus, when I twisted the bulb, it twisted not just the base of the bulb but the socket it was in and the multi-stranded wires that fed the socket. The twisting force in the multi-stranded wires leading to the socket caused the weak insulation to strip off. Some of the now-exposed strands from supply and return lines were then able to arc/short directly. That part of the unit exploded in a shower of sparks. Fortunately, an AFCI breaker cut the power on the circuit pretty quickly.

I also took some close-up photos of where the twisting caused insulation to be removed, the most illustrative of which are attached, or provide the product itself.

The design and manufacturing of this unit appears to have been very unsafe, with the item posing a serious fire hazard. This report is not a post-mortem investigation following a serious fire or personal injury/death, but it is easy to see how such an outcome could have resulted, and may be the outcome in other cases (past or future). I encourage you to take corrective action in order to protect other customers from these negative outcomes.
