The product, in the report: Consumer grade home improvement lighting, motion security light

Subject: Electrical hazard finding Area: Consumer grade home improvement lighting Product: Defiant brand Motion Security Light 463 837 Retailer: The Home Depot Problem: Dangerously long screw results in contacting/cutting into wire insulation

This lighting equipment was being installed on the outside of a garage using a metal weatherproof round junction box, 1 ½ in deep.

From The Home Depot’s website: [REDACTED]

The problem is with the hardware supplied with the Defiant Security Light. The main mounting screw, part “cc” from the manual, is much too long and because it is positioned directly over the incoming 120V power wires, it cuts into the insulation while attaching the light to the box. The installer cannot know this has happened because it is now unseen. In this particular installation the ungrounded hot wire and the ground wire were both damaged and shorted through the screw resulting in the metal round box to be energized (the ground lead was connected to the ground lug of the round box). The light still worked so no indication of a problem until the installer was applying sealant around the box and was shocked. See photos of the installation then the damaged insulation found afterward.

The screw is 40mm long and has 25mm protruding into the box which is much too long, the screw should either be shorter by at least 10mm or offset so as not directly over the incoming wires – or both.
