The product, in the report: TB120 gas push mower
Troybuilt gas push mower tb120 engine suddenly came loose from deck and spun around and stuck me in the shin after inspection it was noted that the steel deck actually ripped and the bolts were still tight . This could have been so much worse Ive only had the mower 2.5 months . I bought it for exercise and to build strength . I just finished chemo and radiation in march for stage 3 cancer and was trying to get back in shape . I love to cut grass with a push mower in the sun! Im glad I only have bruises. I have to be really careful because I dont heal normally right now and this shouldnt have happened. But I want to make sure it doesnt happen when someone is cutting grass and a child is playing outside or an animal is nearby.

The product, in the report: Troy-Bilt TB110 mower with Briggs-Stratton engine 550 EX 140 cc
We have a Troy-Bilt mower with a Briggs-Stratton engine. It is about 4 years old. My spouse was mowing the lawn when the engine began to smoke and almost immediately (~1 second) afterwards, shot a ~5 cm piece of metal out of the engine through the engine housing. The metal appears to have broken off from the engine.
We have maintained this product per the manufacturer’s specifications. Although it is out of warranty, we do not feel that exploding is part of the expected or safe function of a mower.
I have pictures of the damage but was unable to upload them.

The product, in the report: This is the Troy Bilt TB 320, rear wheel drive, 21” cut, walk behind, self-propelled lawn mower.
The Troy Bilt mower model TB 320 has a defective gas cap. Whenever full or near full with gas, the gasoline leaks from the cap onto the mower deck. I’ve had the cap replaced, but the replacement also leaks. This is most pronounced when mowing on a hill. It is both an environmental danger and a fire danger.

The product, in the report: Self powered walk behind mower
Lawn mower was being used in its normal manner.. Blade came off of the mower and landed behind the mower in the space between the mower and the operator. Engine was still running. Shut down the engine and turned the mower on its side. Found that the bolt that holds the blade in place was loose but still in the motor shaft. Found that the blade could be put back on without removing the bolt as the bolt head was approximately the same size as the hole in the blade.

The product, in the report: Troy Bilt TB200 walk behind, self-propelled lawn mower
I was mowing with my Troy Bilt TB200 self propelled lawn mower. The gas cap on this mower is exposed and high on the engine. It also does not fit tightly and is easily loosened. While mowing around and under shrubs, the slightest contact between the gas cab and branches will cause it to loosen and fall off. This leaves the gas tank opening completely exposed and raw gas will spill out onto the hot engine and mower. I feel this is a serious fire and safety hazard and some sort of redesigned gas cap or secondary lock needs to be available. I am afraid to use this mower until this issue is resolved.

Emergency room Made Apr 30, 2012, sent to the company Jun 6, 2012, published by CPSC Jun 20, 2012
The product, in the report: Lawn Mower /Troy Bilt Bronco
The caller bought a Troy Bilt Bronco and while mowing his lawn at normal speeds it sped out of control and he was unable to control it. On 9/21/2011 the mower had over turned and fell on his right leg. The caller had received lacerations to his right leg and had went to hospital to receive stitches. The caller was not admitted to the hospital but was treated and sent home. He received treatment at Angel Community Hospital in Franklin, N.C. After the incident the mower was taken to Lowes Mower company and they advised him that they would repair the mower. The caller was unknown about the exact repairs that were performed on the mower. The company had kept the mower for 12 to 13 days and was brought back to the caller. On 12/5/2011 the incident had re occurred. The manufacturer was contacted approximately 12/5/2011 and recently and they did not offer any assistance. The caller feels that the lawn mower is a safety hazard that should be reported.
[The following are additional notes from the submitter.] Your report is only one of three I reported about my Troy Bilt Bronco riding mower: a) speeded totally out of control, b) returned repaired mower - fails to run, and c) repaired mower breaks down.
Finally, while cutting lawn for the first time (after two trips to repair shop) mower suddenly started to stall; cutting blade disconnected, caused mower to speed up out of control! Brakes were of no use! Had to cut off ignition to save having mower turning over.
I tried to contact Troy Bilt Co. Was told could only handle warranty service - “sorry”. Only wanted to give Troy Bilt “a heads up” of possible trouble in clutch-speed control.

No one hurt Made Aug 9, 2011, published by CPSC Aug 31, 2011
The product, in the report: Rotary lawn mower
While using a mower purchased approximately one year ago, the blade came off. A keyed section of a metal casting that holds the blade to the motor shaft fractured at some point and the bolt that holds the blade and the casting assembly to the motor shaft sheared off.
My concern is not the minimal amount it will take repair the mover. Rather, there might be a flaw in the metal casting and/or the bolt. I was not injured, but if circumstances were different serious injury could occur. A blade spinning at high speed can do a lot of damage.

No one hurt Made May 31, 2011, published by CPSC Jul 14, 2011
The product, in the report: Troy Bilt Push Mower 0.91L
Consumer wanted to report that yesterday while her brother was operating a Troy Bilt push lawn mower, the blade from the lawn mower came loose and embedded itself into the ground. The consumer feels that this could pose a safety hazard since somebody could be maimed or killed. The consumer, her brother, his fiancé’ and the consumer’s dogs were presently in the yard when the incident took place. The consumer’s brother was using the mower for about 20 minutes before the incident happened. Aside from the time her brother changed the oil and cleaned the lawn mower about two weeks ago, the product has not been modified. The consumer stated that the bolt from the mower, the bolt claps and the blade came off the lawn mower. The consumer’s brother heard a strange noise from the lawn mower and then lifted the mower to find that the blade embedded itself into the ground within 5 feet of where he lifted the lawn mower. The consumer found the bolt , the blade and the bolt clasp within a foot of each other. The consumer has yet to call the retailer or the manufacturer. The consumer’s has not noticed any structural damage to the product. Thankfully, no one was injured but the consumer felt it was imperative to report this issue to the CPSC.
