The product, in the report: Tecumseh Lawn Mower Engine Carburetor Primer
Below is a letter I sent to Tecumseh/Certified Power Inc. about a rubber carburetor primer that is made out of a type of rubber that dissolves/melts from the alcohol that is in gas now.
Tecumseh went out of business in 2007 and is owned by Certified Power Inc. now.
I feel any rubber parts that were made for carburetors back in the 70’s need to be made of rubber that won’t dissolve in gas that has alcohol. Alcohol is in all gas now. I am worried that if I buy a new primer for my Tecumseh engine that the rubber will have the same problem that the old primer had and might dissolve/melt and gas will leak into my garage and may get ignited by a light or other spark ---
I have a 1976 CRAFTSMAN Lawn Mower Walk Behind Model # 131973330 with a Tecumseh engine ECV100-145065A. The rubber primer (730188) on the bottom of the carburetor melted and a tank of gas leaked in my garage. I am lucky that a spark didn’t ignite the gas fumes.
I was wondering if I bought a new primer kit [REDACTED], if it would be made from a different type of rubber that won’t melt from the alcohol in the new gas?
I don’t use the primer because I figure it will last longer if I don’t use it. I was thinking of a way to fill in the primer hole in the bottom of the carb. float bowl. I will see if I can put some solder into the hole to plug and stop gas from leaking out.
Is there any solution to this problem you recommend?
PS: The www.tecumseh.com emaiform.php doesn’t work. Maybe you could fix it so people are sent to CPI so they can contact the new owner of Tecumseh. The broken form is navigated to like this: http://www.tecumsehpower.com click FAQ which goes to http://www.tecumsehpower.com/CustomerService/faq.php at the bottom is a link to ... on-line contact form ... which takes you to https://custome rservice/ServiceLocator/emailform.php Then a page “This page can’t be displayed” comes up.
