No one hurt Made Jun 8, 2016, sent to the company Jul 1, 2016, published by CPSC Jun 30, 2016
The product, in the report: Battery Powered Mower
I recently purchased a Snapper SP60V battery powered lawn mower. I used the mower about 5 days before the incident without issue. After that use, I washed the deck of the mower, removed the battery and folded the mower to stand on its side. I then charged the battery. On Sunday, 6/5, I took the mower out of the shed, still in its folded orientation. I inserted the battery and the mower started on its own. The start button was not depressed, nor the bail lever depressed. The blades were exposed nearly hitting my leg. I dropped the mower to its wheels and quickly removed the battery. I then unfolded the mower to its normal operating orientation and again inserted the battery. The same result - it started on its own. I tried to depress the start button and / or depress the bail to see if it would shut off. It did not. I then took a video of the mower running on its own with no human interaction, as well as the mower starting on its own by inserting the battery.

The product, in the report: Snapper SP80 21-Inch Variable Speed Front Wheel Self-Propelled Lawn Mower with 725ex Series 4-Cycle 190cc Engine
I purchased Snapper SP80 21-Inch Variable Speed Front Wheel Self-Propelled Lawn Mower with 725ex Series 4-Cycle 190cc Engine from Amazon.com
The product shipped with oil in the engine and delivered on June 18th. I used the product about 7 times (roughly 6 hours on the engine). Within minutes after the final start, the engine experienced a catastrophic failure. Hot shrapnel broke through the housing of the engine and landed within inches of my feet. I was fortunate to escape injury.
