The product, in the report: Lawn Mower, battery-powered walk behind
INCIDENT DETAILS: I am writing to report a catastrophic safety failure involving my Ryobi 40V lawn mower and battery system. Model# RY401210
While stored inside my attached garage of my house, one of the Ryobi batteries in the mower underwent sudden and severe thermal runaway. It caught fire, reached extreme temperatures, melted through the plastic housing and surrounding chassis, and filled my entire garage with dense, toxic, acrid smoke.
The battery compartment is completely melted and charred shut, fusing the battery into the mower body and venting hazardous fumes. Only through pure luck was I home, smelled the toxic burning odor, and intervened in time to manually haul the smoking, actively failing unit out into my open driveway. Had I been away from the house, asleep, or delayed, this unprompted thermal event could have resulted in massive damages to my home.

No incident, no one hurt Made Jul 18, 2026, sent to the company Jul 23, 2026, published by CPSC Aug 6, 2026
The product, in the report: The product is a Ryobi 40V Brushless 21 Cordless WalkBehind Lawn Mower. It is bright yellowgreen with black accents, which is Ryobis standard color scheme. The cutting width is 21 inches. It is a batterypowered, cordless mower designed for residential lawn care. The model number on the product label is RY401014US, and the label also lists 40V 21 in. (533 mm) Cutting Path. The mower uses Ryobi 40V battery packs. It is a walkbehind push mower intended for mowing typical residential yards.
I was using a Ryobi 40V Brushless 21 cordless walkbehind lawn mower, model RY401014US. This mower was a recall replacement that Ryobi sent me in February 2025 after I disabled my original mower per their recall instructions. I was mowing my residential yard normally when the replacement mower began stalling repeatedly. It would start, run for a few seconds, and then shut off abruptly.
I was the person using the mower, and I was operating it in a normal, safe manner on my lawn. The mower was being used exactly as intended cutting grass on a flat yard.
The sudden stalls caused the mower to jerk and stop unexpectedly, which could cause someone to lose balance or be injured if the mower stops while turning or pushing forward. No injury occurred, but the behavior is unsafe and similar to the failure mode described in the original recall.
I contacted Ryobi recall support, but they refused assistance and said the mower was out of warranty, even though this is a recall replacement that is now failing in a potentially hazardous way.

The product, in the report: Ryobi 40v Crosscut Lawnmower
My Ryobi mower (model RY401015US) suddenly started smoking and stopped working, and when I removed the top cover I saw that two connectors had burned and caught on fire, also burning part of the mower’s housing. Before it outright stopped working it would not turn off without removing the battery, meaning the blades would spin even when the handles were not being depressed. Not sure if it’s related but it would always happen toward the end of my mowing (regular grass, not thick brush or leaves), likely when the connectors were their hottest. It was concerning enough to not let anyone else use it, as removing the battery requires you to lean in and lift a cover, and feet get uncomfortably close to the spinning blade.
I did see there was a recall for my model for the exact same issue (recall 25-127), but when I entered my mower’s serial number it inexplicably told me my mower wasn’t included in the recall, even though the recall was to cover connectors that can catch on fire, which mine did.

The product, in the report: RYOBI 21 cordless mower, walk-behind
Sharp Handle Edge Causing Repeated Cuts (RYOBI 21 Cordless Mower)
The plastic handle used to engage the self-propel function has a sharp molded edge along the seam. During normal use, where your hand wraps around the handle to operate the drive, this edge repeatedly contacts my fingers/hands and has now caused multiple cuts during various uses.
This does not appear to be normal wear or misuse. The edge feels unfinished and sharp. Given the placement of the edge at a primary contact point, this presents a foreseeable laceration risk during standard use.
I’ve documented and shared the following with Ryobi:
- Photos of the handle edge - Photos of the injury - The exact contact point during operation
These are the dates I contacted Ryobi:
May 7, 2026 - Received a reply same day (5/7) saying they want to escalate this matter to their Product Safety Department
June 12, 2026 - I reached out because I hadn’t been contacted again - Ryobi responded same day (6/12) saying they reached out to safety department on my behalf to let them know I have not been contacted.
I have yet to receive a response from the Product Safety Department.
I continue to operate the mower with extreme caution and now use thick gloves to avoid further cuts. However, it is not my responsibility to modify the handle or wear gloves to avoid injury with normal use.

The product, in the report: Ryobi Mower 13” battery powered, walk behind
This product was a Ryobi 13” battery operated lawnmower. No injuries happened but the kill switch failed to work when the safety levers were released. I called the company twice and sent one formal letter to no avail . I indicated this should be evaluated because what happened was the power switch is able to get “stuck” in the on position. This letter was sent to the Safety office on September 18th. Contact info was provided. I
Ryobi 100 Innovation Way Anderson, SC 29621
Attn: Safety Office To whom it may concern: I am writing to report what I believe to be a significant safety issue with the P1108VNM mower regarding the Deadman (bail) switch. I attempted to report this through your customer support line, making clear that my concern was about safety rather than warranty coverage. I am not seeking remuneration, but rather a responsible and appropriate response from the company to protect life and limb. The mower in question was purchased used in an almost-new condition (Serial number LT21132N020071). I observed that the power button can stick in the on position and does not disengage when the safety lever is released. This could allow the blades to continue operating without operator control. I am aware that a related issue with a different model led to recall 95-173. When I contacted support, I was referred to a local repair shop ([REDACTED]). I asked to be redirected to your safety department to escalate my concern, but I was again given the same referral. I emphasized that while this mower is out of warranty, safety issues such as this extend beyond product warranties, particularly since this model remains on the market. I then contacted the repair shop directly and offered to pay for an assessment out of pocket, but was told they could only service units still under warranty. As a retired Certified Quality Engineer, I am familiar with risk assessment practices when defects with potential for serious bodily harm are reported. My decision to purchase a Ryobi mower was based in part on my prior positive experience with your One+ line and my confidence in Ryobis commitment to safety. Please advise on next steps. I am located within driving distance of your [REDACTED] (approximately 50 minutes) and would be willing to bring the mower for inspection. Alternatively, authorizing the local repair shop to examine the power button regardless of warranty status would be a simple first step, allowing them to determine whether this is an isolated defect or a potential design issue. Thank you for your attention to this matter

My ryobi mower had internal wiring that overheated to the degree that the insulation burned. The exposed overheated wiring melted through the side of the mower case. Smoke poored out from the mower causing my son to cough after walking through the plume. The compartment with the key expelled smoke leaving a coating on the key.

The product, in the report: Both mowers are Ryobi 40V battery powered electric. The smaller one is a Ry40104 and the larger is 20” RY40109
I have three cordless electric lawnmowers from Ryobi. My wide one, within a year, started stalling. Not normal for an electric mower. The stalling has gotten worse and now it finally will only run for a few seconds, typically. It has a brand new battery. The dangerous thing is that you have to pull a grip, then press a button to start. So, I can press the button over and over and over and it won’t start....but then, maybe up to like a minute or more later, it will suddenly start. Once, I had even started to flip it over to see if maybe there was something caught in the blades and it started. Now, my narrower mower has done the same thing. Also 40V. I have not had this problem with my 18V small mower...yet. There have never been any injuries, but my mowers make me real nervous now. The larger has a drive and I just imagine it starting and then moving! Goodbye toes. I have notified Ryobi a couple times. The first time, the sent me a replacement for the RY 40109, but it did the same thing. I once had an agent say I could take it for repair, but the nearest place was 140 miles away. She said she would send me a mailing label, but I asked about a box to ship it and I just never heard anything again. The last time I contacted them, the agent said she didn’t have the time (I had contacted and suggested that maybe it was a bad battery....she had me go through all my tools to find a serial number she liked, then just sent me a new battery and charger).

The product, in the report: Ryobi Mower, model RY401015US (107565001), Serial Number KC23092D010008
Lawn mower caught fire and burned completely. Fire department was called to put out the fire. The lawn around the lawnmower was burnt. This happened after the first battery was used and the mower was switched to the second battery. the mower started smoking almost imeadiately. At great risk to her safety, my mother in law removed both batteries from the mower while it was still smoking. The second battery was very hot. After the batteries were removed, the mower continued and increased smoking, eventually bursting into flames. The fire department was called but a neighbor assisted in putting out the flames before the fire department arrived. The flames burnt a section of the grass. There was little left of the mower other than charged plastic pieces with embedded metal and grass. Had this happened nearer to the house, it could have caught the house on fire.

The product, in the report: Ryobi Electric 21 Mower Model RY401140US
I was mowing my grass with my Ryobi Electric Mower, model RY401140US and, after getting about 1/2 my front yard done when the battery died. I opened the compartment to switch the battery key to the second battery and the compartment was filled with smoke. It smelled very mechanical and electronic. I quickly removed the batteries and moved the mower to my driveway, away from my home. I blew the smoke away and it eventually stopped coming out after a few minutes. I immediately called Ryobi and was told to take it to the nearest repair center, which is over 50 miles from where I live. I called the repair center and they stated they are 12-14 weeks out with over 160 electric mowers awaiting repair. I called Ryobi back and they are now wanting me to ship it to an out of state location but Im responsible for finding a box or co gainer large enough to ship a 21 mower in. Im beyond frustrated that these are the only 2 option available to me. In addition, Im now going to be out a mower through the remainder of this year into the next.

The product, in the report: Ryobi 40 V lithium electric lawn mower. The color is black and green. Brushless. Self propelled. 20 in.
While using my Ryobi electric lawn mower, the grass clipping bag fell off and I tripped over it and injured myself. I had made sure that the bag was attached correctly, but due to (in my opinion) to the design, the bag fell off and had a history of doing so. Closed clip type hooks instead of open C shaped hooks would be an easy solution to this problem and would keep others from being injured. Over a month later I still have pain in my arm.

I was using my Ryobi RY401014US lawn mower this weekend and it suddenly stopped. I was mowing dry short (less than 3”) grass. I opened the battery compartment to check if it the battery died and noticed flames and smoke from the vents. I quickly pulled out the red key and removed the battery to avoid any dangerous lithium battery combustion. It seems like the defect was enclosed within the unit and it was not related to the battery. I closed the battery lid and pushed the mower to safe spot and waited for the flame and smoke to stop. No immediate injuries, but did inhale a good amount of smoke trying to remove the battery and key. If the battery were to overheat or cache fire I could see this as a very dangerous life threatening concern.

As I was mowing my yard this past weekend, the mower suddenly ceased operation and began emitting smoke after approximately 10 minutes of use. Curious as to what was causing the issue, I opened the top where the batteries are housed and discovered a small fire behind them. Acting fast, I removed the safety pin and pulled out the batteries, extinguishing the flames without anyone being harmed. I am now collaborating with RYOBI to investigate the root cause of this alarming incident.

Ryobi Model # RY401017VNM 40 volt, push mower. Attachment point failed for the rear foot guard (trailing sheet) with no way to re-attach it. This renders useless an important required safety feature for the mower. This occurred after one (1) season of use, approximately ten (10) hours. I was using the mower at the time. The mower was being used to mow a very small residential lawn. Failure of the rear foot guard could allow a foot to slip beneath the mower deck and cause serious injury if it contacted the blade. No injuries have been experienced. Will contact manufacturer’s warranty service center for repair.

On July 17th, we purchased a Ryobi electric mower that came with two 40V battery packs and a charger. We did as told and made sure the batteries were not stored on the charger and kept inside at room temperature and await from moisture or high humidity. After the first use, both batteries would no longer charge. We contacted Ryobi and received two replacement batteries but they didn’t ask for the batteries back or suggest there was anything concerning to them going into “sleep mode.” Fast forward to October 27th. I happened to walk past our storage room and found it was filled with smoke and smelled horrible. One of the Ryobi batteries had melted a hole in the casing and was spewing smoke/fumes everywhere. My husband grabbed our woodstove gloves, got the battery out of the house, and called the fire department.
The fire department came out and checked out the whole house and confirmed the smoke and fumes were from the battery melting a hole. They used equipment to aerate the house so that we could get our pets and ourselves back into the house and advised us to run fans to continue airing out the melted plastic odor. They also recommended that we contact Home Depot and Ryobi, which I did, but Home Depot has yet to return our message and Ryobi passed us off to a safety group who have yet to get in touch.
As both battery packs that came with the mower were defective, the fire department told us to get the batteries into heavy-duty [REDACTED] bags, a box, and wrap that box in a heavy-duty trash bag. They told us where we need to bring them to ensure they’re properly recycled and handled from this point on.

I purchased Ryobi lawn mower model RY40108 and received it on 8/9/2016. After using the mower and spraying it off, I stored it in my garage. I was having problems making it turn on. After removing the “Start key” and putting it back in, the mower started running without the “bail” safety release or the “start button” being pressed. The mower ran for approximately 30 seconds without the “bail” bar safely release being held down. This bail bar is the bar that is designed to stop the mower as soon as it is released. Ryobi 48V Self Propelled Battery Powered Lawn Mower model: RY14110
While I was out traveling, [REDACTED] called me and said there was a sulfur smell throughout the lower floor of the house to the point she and our children couldn’t stay in the house because they were having trouble breathing. I had her call Atlanta Gas and Light to come out and check for any gas leaks. What AGL found with their detection meters, instead, was that the lawnmower was giving off toxic levels of gasses (can’t remember which) and trace amounts of carbon monoxide (not enough CO to set off our carbon monoxide alarm). Unplugging and moving the mower outside almost immediately caused the levels to drop. I have since moved it back inside but haven’t plugged it back in. Without it plugged in, it is not emitting any odor. So I suspect the battery and/or charging circuitry is problematic up in some way.
I am about to call Ryobi to get the lawnmower fixed or replaced, so don’t have any more information on the nature of the issue.

I had completed using my mower, Ryobi 20 inch Self-Propelled Cordless 48V Electric Mower- Model RY14110, to trim my grass around noon on 4/15/2011. I noticed that the battery was low, so I plugged it in without any extension cord and the battery charger LED switched to RED to indicate charging was required and started.
On 4/16/2011 before noon, my wife ran to me repoting she smelled a GAS leak and wanted me to confirm. I checked the area and the source of the GAS smell was not our fireplace, but the mover which parked under my outdoor patio, near the fireplace exhaust vent. On closer inspection, the battery was leaking clear fluid out the LED indicators, sides and had pooled beneath the battery. The battery was also HOT to the touch. The LED indicator on the charger was still, RED indicating it was still charging, even though the smart charger is supposed to shut off, when max charge is reached. I immediately removed the Charger from the outlet and moved the mower away from my home and the patio area to limit the exposure to the strong fumes.
Hours later the bad fumes had largly subsided, but the battery was still hot to the touch.

The product, in the report: Ryobi 48 Volt Battery Powered Lawn Mower (RY14110)
I plugged in my RY14110 battery powered lawn mower with the provided charger after mowing the lawn last Sunday. On my arrival home from work on Monday, the garage (where the mower is stored) smelled strongly of sulfur. When checked, the odor seemed to be coming from the battery, which had swollen. The charger continued to show the red (actively charging) light.
After unplugging the charger, I attempted to move the battery outside. As I lifted it, it started leaking battery acid all over the garage floor. Although fortunately this was caught, I think this would be an extreme hazard of fire, explosion, or poisoning if hydrogen sulfide gas is leaking from an overcharged battery!

The product, in the report: A battery operated walk behind electric lawn mower
In the spring of 2011, I purchased a Ryobi walk behind battery operated electric lawn mower from Home Depot’s online store. After using it to maintain my lawn during the summer, I placed the mower into storage and moved the battery pack to my basement to keep it in a temperature stable environment for the winter. On the afternoon of Jan 29, 2012, I brought the battery from my basement to the garage in order to charge it in an effort to maintain the battery pack’s life. The charging was performed by the original charger that came with the mower and has worked normally in the past. On the morning of Jan 31, I awoke to the smell of what I believe was hydrogen sulfide gas in the house. After a quick search, I discovered the red charge light was still illuminated on the battery charger and battery pack was the source of the gas. After beginning ventilation of the house, I carried the battery pack outdoors and noticed it leaking acid. The battery charger had been connected for approximately 40 hours and during this time, failed to automatically shut off as it is designed to do when the battery had fully charged. The failure of the charger to discontinue operation at the appropriate charge level created a highly dangerous situation which could have resulted in fire, explosion, or the poisoning of my family had I not found and removed the device. I believe a properly designed and manufactured charger would not have failed in this fashion and created such a dangerous situation.

The product, in the report: Ryobi 20 inch Self-Propelled Cordless Electric Mower, Model #RY14110A, being sold exclusively at The Home Depot
On June 4th, 2011, my wife and I purchased a Ryobi self propelled cordless electric lawn mower from HomeDepot.com. The lawn mower had received great reviews on the website up until that point and we were interested in a more ‘green’ option than a traditional gas mower. The mower was functional and we were satisfied with our purchase until August 2011.
One afternoon in August, I smelled a chemical smell in the garage. I investigated the smell and figured out it was coming from the lawn mower. The battery was hot, all of its lights were on, and it was covered in a clear fluid that we later determined to be battery acid. After unplugging the mower and waiting until the next morning, my wife called the customer service department at Ryobi. They stated that there had been a problem with the battery chargers and a new charger had been remanufactured. They assured us that a replacement battery and battery charger would be delivered within 3 weeks.
Fast forward to January 2012, we have not received anything from Ryobi.
Last night I decided to take a look at homedepot.com to see if any other customers had a similar problem. When I looked up the lawn mower, there were at least 20 other customers with the EXACT same story as us. Battery overcharged, leaked battery acid, called Ryobi, were assured they’d get a replacement, and no battery was ever replaced. Clearly Ryobi’s product is defective.
In summary, we’ve lost almost $400 on a mower that doesn’t work, and quite possibly is a fire hazard. The battery acid leaked onto our garage floor, which was a safety hazard for me, my pets, and the environment.
Even with the slew of negative reviews on HomeDepot.com, the store continues to sell the product. What is most questionable is that both my wife and I attempted to leave poor product reviews on the HomeDepot.com site, and they rejected both of our reviews because we included the fact that Ryobi had been terrible to deal with. If they rejected our reviews, how many other customers have had this same issue but could not be heard because HomeDepot.com is rejecting reviews from unsatisfied customers, thus keeping the rating for the product high? In addition, Ryobi’s issued no recalls and there’s A LOT of people left with broken lawnmowers and tons of frustration. How much longer will they sell the product before someone is injured?
