The product, in the report: Walk behind, gas powered lawn mower
(3/2024): The first time the consumer used the mower, oil spewed on top of the mower and engine. She checked the oil compartment and found that it was dry. She cleaned it as best as she could and used the mower.
(7/1/2024): The consumer took the mower back to the dealer and their technician examined it. Their staff told her that they could not assist her, because she had exceeded the store’s 30 days of warranty service. The consumer wanted to return the mower, but the store manager told her they could not take it back.
The consumer called the mower manufacturer and was given the number to 2 local service companies. She called those companies and was told that she would have to pay for some of the repairs. The consumer noted that she purchased their extended warranty, for an additional 2 years of coverage and should not have to pay anything. Nothing else transpired.
The mower has a Briggs Stratton Engine. The engine has completely stopped working and the mower can no longer be used.
Pd $45 for 2 yr warranty

The product, in the report: Murray 20” Side Discharge Rotary Lawn Mower with Briggs & Stratton 300E series “Engine Made in USA” engine
Murray Mower Gas Cap
Murray 20-inch side-discharge rotary mower with Briggs & Stratton 300E series “Engine Made in USA” engine
Recently purchased Murray rotary 20-inch push mower turns out to have very poorly, even unsafely designed gas cap/position. The “easy open/close” 1/4 turn gas cap is near the mower’s left side (as pushing), thus whenever mowing close to anything which might overhang the mower deck, moving forward and brushing against object(s) can rotate the easy-open gas cap 1/4 turn counterclockwise, popping open the cap. While the cap IS within sight of mower operator and unintended opening (usually) is spotted quickly, if a just-filled tank suffered a soon-after accidental opening, enough gasoline might splash across top of engine to be ignited by hot exhaust on other side, flashing back into entire just-filled tank. = saferproducts.gov locks up/fails when attempt accessing via Rural TN dial-up internet Attempting downloading “report form” is useless, because once filled out “You’re unable to save this report” thus can’t re-attach to email [what CPSC programmer arranged THAT?] -- Murray 20-inch side-discharge rotary mower with Briggs & Stratton 300E series “Engine Made in USA” engine Purchased from Walmart in TN 07-01-16 (approx) Used at 213 Wheat Store rd., Decaturville USA TN 38329
No injuries [certainly great POTENTIAL with poor cap design/placement]. Only POSITIVE thing is it’s a “captive” cap -- so at least immediately-at-hand for reclosure.
[REDACTED] [haven’t yet decided whether also attempt notify Murray; would need LOCATE first-- it’s all “in China” now -- Merely ENGINE made in USA]

The product, in the report: Murray Push Lawn Mower
Push Mower (Murray) Serial Number 11AB24Z758 Model Number 1A303KF0394 Purchased 3-17-2013
This lawn mower has an inherent safety defect. The engine for this model does not sit flush on the deck. It is mounted on nubs which allow for several spaces large enough to allow debris to exit in the direction of the operator. The openings are about one inch wide and I can see the blade when I look in. I have been hit in the face with twigs, acorns, and soil. Goggles have prevented a few potential eye injuries.
I called their customer service department and was told the openings help cool the engine. This is a blatant lie! This product needs to be recalled! It is dangerous whenever used on anything other than a manicured lawn.

The product, in the report: Push Behind Lawn Mower. Motor: Briggs & Stratton 300 Series Serial #: 1301095194389
The consumer believes that the instruction provided in the manual are misleading.
The consumer stated that in following the manf instructions for oil change, the engine must be run and then the gas drained while the engine is still hot.
The consumer believes that this could result in an explosion or fire.
The consumer stated that these instructions were provided on the manual to change oil because of the lack of the drain plug.
There are no recalls on this unit.
