The product, in the report: 20” push mower. Briggs & Stratton lawn mower engine model # B&S 300E 125CC , serial # 1505205484786
The gas cap on my lawn mower easily comes off when rubbing against bushes or other brush, spilling gas onto the mower while in operation which could cause an explosion or fire. My mower information follows: Briggs & Stratton lawn mower engine model # B&S 300E 125CC , serial # 1505205484786.
The gas cap is a plastic quarter-turn tab type. i.e., there are no threads. It comes off very easily. When mowing under bushes, the cap or the plastic strap that attaches the cap to the mower will catch in the bush or brush causing the cap to come loose. If it does not come off immediately, it will vibrate off within a few minutes. This has happened to me many times. At first I did not know why the cap was coming off. Then I noticed it rubbing against a bush and could see the cap turn when that happened.
The above comments are facts. My opinion is that the cap is cheaply made and does not have enough tension to keep it in place. I have several other gas yard machines, most of which have threaded gas caps which tighten very well and would never come off when touching an object. The one other machine that has a quarter turn tab cap is made out of metal and has a tension spring which makes it very hard to take off and would not come off when rubbing against something.
In summary, I feel that this cap is cheaply made, very dangerous, and needs to be recalled/discontinued.
I called Briggs & Stratton to voice my concern. They basically blew me off, saying that they would include my concern on a list to presented to some committee and probably would never be acted upon.
I hope that you can exert some pressure on the Briggs & Stratton people to fix this problem/recall the mower with this type of cap and discontinue production of it on new units.
Let me know, if you need further information from me.
Thank you.
