The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. No one hurt

Made Sep 22, 2015, sent to the company Oct 2, 2015, published by CPSC Oct 19, 2015

    The product, in the report: GREENWORKS 40-VOLT 20” DUAL-BLADE Li-ION BATTERY-POWERED LAWNMOWER, MODEL 25302.

The product in question is the GREENWORKS 40-VOLT 20” DUAL-BLADE Li-ION BATTERY-POWERED LAWNMOWER, MODEL 25302.

I bought this lawnmower, serial number GWT0510399-02/20/14, through Target Stores (on-line mail order, with order number 102506043369) on April 30, 2015. When the lawnmower developed a serious safety problem (see below), a similar replacement lawnmower (Model 25302) was sent to me by Greenworks’ post-sales support representative, Sunrise Global Marketing Inc., in June 2015. The serial number of the replacement unit is GWT0510445-02/20/14.

The total area of my lawn (total of front and back) is about 4,800 square feet. This area is flat, except for a steep slope on one side of the front yard.

I used the first lawnmower (above) several times, with no problem. However, on or about May 21, 2015, I noticed that the bail was repeatedly failing to electrically disconnect the electric motor when the bail was released. (The bail is the safety bar that must be kept depressed in order to maintain an electrical connection to the motor.) When the bail is released, it is supposed to disconnect the electric motor. Failure to disconnect is a SERIOUS SAFETY PROBLEM because, in the event that the lawnmower starts to slide back toward the user on a slope, the electric motor must be quickly stopped to prevent extreme injury. When release of the bail fails to stop the electric motor, the only way to stop the motor is to manually pull out the circuit key, or manually pull out the battery, either of which takes a number of seconds to perform.

I called the Greenworks support representative, Sunrise Global Marketing (telephone 888-909-6757) and explained the safety problem to them. They made arrangements for a replacement unit (see above for the S/N) to be sent to me through their office in Mooresville, NC (telephone 704-660-2800). I received the replacement unit on June 9, 2015. The Sunrise Global Marketing reference number for this transaction is 1133884. During June, July, and August, I used the replacement unit several times with no safety problem.

Then, on September 19, 2015, while I was mowing my lawn, the replacement unit repeatedly displayed the same safety problem as the original unit: RELEASE OF THE BAIL WOULD NOT STOP THE ELECTRIC MOTOR.

On September 19, 2015, I called Sunrise Global Marketing at telephone 888-909-6757, and also the retailer, Target Stores, and reported the latest safety problem. I sought to return the lawnmower and obtain a refund. Both organizations advised me that the lawnmower could not be returned.
