The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: Honda walk-behind lawnmower; Model HRX 2174HYA, Serial Number MAGA 2310164

This complaint involves use of a Honda walk-behind lawnmower: Model HRX2174HYA, Serial Number MAGA 2310164. This is an easy start model usually requiring little force with the recoil starter rope to start the engine. Yesterday, October 8,2025 my wife had difficulty starting the lawn mower and asked for my assistance. I had great difficulty pulling the recoil starter rope since there was significant resistance. This was unusual since it has never happened before in the 11 years I have used this lawnmower. When I was able to get some movement on the recoil rope there was a sudden recoil on the rope of significant force that the rope pulled me forward into the handlebar assembly. I have a 1.5 inch circular bruise on my left arm from hitting the handlebars and soreness in my right shoulder from the tug on my right shoulder from the recoil. The force of the recoil was sufficient to cause more serious injury such as broken bones, shoulder strains, or lacerations from falling forward into the lawn mower mechanisms. The owners manual does not warn of recoil dangers with this lawnmower. This condition came as a complete surprise. I have stopped using this lawnmower because of the danger when trying to start it. In 2023 Honda issued a recall for a situation like mine but it did not include older models; camshaft decompressor malfunction. However, from my experience this condition is also prevalent in lawnmowers sold before 2023 with possibility of injury.

I was mowing the lawn and I had mowed the front yard as Ive done for the last two years. I went to the back yard to mow and had been doing that fine for a bit. The mower seemed to emit a puff of black smoke and died. I checked it over and everything seemed fine. I started it up again and it worked but then started smoking a lot. I looked and it had caught fire. . Wheeled it into the front drive and extinguished the fire.

Made Nov 2, 2023, sent to the company Nov 16, 2023, published by CPSC Dec 1, 2023

The product, in the report: Walk behind, self propelled, lawn mower

Early 8/2023, the consumer’s wife was using the walk behind mower. She turned it off. She tried to start the engine again and when she pulled the cord, it ripped her arm back with the recoil. She saw a physician for her injury and was diagnosed with an acute elbow injury.

The wife still has pain in her elbow and wrist from the incident. She rarely takes medication, but has been taking Ibuprofin since her injury.

The mower’s recoil malfunctioned also while the consumer was using it on different occasions. At first, he thought that it might simply be an issue of the mower being hard to start. The problem occurred with the consumer approximately 25 times. The problem happens when the mower is started and occurs when the mower is restarted after a break. The problem now occurs every single time that the mower is used.

10/26/2023: The consumer received the recall notice: (CPSC #23-287). He is also concerned that he purchased the mower in July 2023, but the CPSC recall noticed indicates that they were sold through June 2023.

He contacted several local service centers for the recall remedy.

    • Most of the places he contacted no longer services these mowers. • Another place can’t hire staff to work on them, because they can find qualified technicians. • Another service center said they can fix it, but not for more than a month, after they get the parts.

---The consumer asked the retailer if he could return it, but their rep. said he’d was not sure about that. The retailer has also stopped carrying this line of mowers.

10/31/2023: The consumer contacted the manufacturer and asked their rep. if he could return the product and he was told it was a retailer’s decision.

The consumer asked for information from the rep. about the mfr’s discussions with [REDACTED] & CPSC, but the rep. could not provide that information. He then asked for an email to the manufacturer’s staff, who could discuss this area but the rep. said she did not have that information.

Lastly, the mfr’s rep. said she had to record the phone call. The consumer asked if he could record the phone call as well, but the rep. said no. He then asked if his wife could listen in on the call and the rep. said no. The consumer believes that the firm is being evasive in their handling of questions.

NOTE: He purchased the mower from a manufacturer’s authorized store, after the month listed in the recall.

    1. Why was his mower permitted to be sold after the recall dates? 2. Why wasn’t he notified sooner about this matter, considering the company had his contact information.

The product, in the report: Walk behind push lawnmower

7/15/2023: the consumer noticed the problem of the mower leaking fuel.

The consumer went inside his garage to get the lawn mower and notice that fuel was leaking from it. He had used it earlier that day for approximately 15 – 20 minutes. He did not notice any problems with the mower while it was in use. He started the mower and used the remaining fuel.

Approximately 1 – 2 weeks prior to the date of incident, he noticed a small amount of fuel leakage from the mower, but we not sure of how substantial the problem could be.

7/15/2023: He called the dealer and asked about returning it. Initially he spoke with a manager, who agreed to take it back. When he took the mower to the dealer, their manager told him they could not accept it, because the dealer had a “Stop Sale” on these mowers.

7/15/2023: The consumer stopped by another dealer, with the same name and tried to return the mower. However, he was told the same thing. They could not take it back due to the manufacturer’s “Stop Sale” on it.

7/17/2023: The consumer called the manufacturer and spoke to with a person named [REDACTED] (last name unknown). [REDACTED] told him that he would have to take it to a service center. The consumer then asked to speak with a manager and was told that one would call him back later.

7/17/2023: The consumer called the dealer’s Customer Service department and spoke with [REDACTED]. She told him that he should be able to take it back with a return authorization from the manufacturer.

The consumer is stuck between the manufacturer and the retailer, with a mower that presents several safety issues.

He then called the manufacturer again and spoke to [REDACTED] (last name and position unknown). The rep. told him that the manufacturer does not provide return authorizations.

The product, in the report: Honda self-propelled mower , GA

I was using my Honda HRX2175VKA when I must have hit a rock in the yard and I heard a loud crack. There was no damage visible at the time. I recently was changing the oil and sharpening the blade so had the mower on its side and observed that the deck/shroud next to the blade was cracked and had a quarter size hole in it. The rock/object must have been propelled through the deck and caused the hole.

This struck me as a safety hazard as the integrity of the plastic material had been compromised. As the mower deck has a lifetime warranty, I took the mower first to Home Depot, where it was reviewed and deemed to be damaged by “abuse”. I contacted Honda customer service and inquired about the damage being covered under lifetime warranty and if hitting a rock in the yard would be considered abusive use. I was advised to take it to another shop and was also contacted by a senior account specialist who advised he didn’t think hitting a rock was abuse.

I took it in to the shop, had it reviewed, and was told this time that the damage was due to an impact so was wasn’t covered by warranty. From this, I am to assume that the Honda plastic deck material is not designed to stop rocks from penetrating and being ejected. My particular rock impact went away from me while mowing. Some other consumer may not be so lucky and will catch a speeding object in the lower extremities or will impact someone further away.

I believe that the plastic material used by Honda is unsafe and should be recalled and not used again.

The product, in the report: Honda Lawn Mowe

My father in law and myself both purchased Honda self propelled rotary mowers 4 and 3 years ago respectively. We have both been fans of Honda products for many years. After purchasing these mowers, we noticed they were of lesser quality than previous mowers. Most notably. The rear drive wheels would periodically lock up after the clutch was released. This made mowing very difficult. In he summer of 2017, I searched the Internet where many Honda owners reported similar problems. Some sites recommended methods of repair. No information was available in my online searches from Honda. I attempted a repair and after reassembly the drive belt fell off. After further work, I got that back on but the wheels still would not roll backwards. Out of frustration, I went to the Honda Power Equipment site and filed a complaint that provided model number, serial number and summary of the problem. I never recieved a reply, but a Honda “Robot” continued to send be satisfaction surveys to which I responded that I had not recieved an answer.

This summer the belt fell off again and I was just fed up. I took the machine back to the Honda Dealer from which I purchased it and explained it was the third mower I had purchased from them and it was of far lesser Quality. I felt I had paid a premium for a “best in class” mower and instead was provided a Walmart quality machine. The service manager said there may be a service bulletin that covered my machines problem and might be repaired at no cost. After about three or for weeks he called me and said it was repaired at no cost by Honda. My wife picked up the machine and stopped by my father in laws house. When she told him the story, she called the Honda dealer and was told she had to bring it in to see if it was a affected machine, it could not be done over the phone. After she brought my mower home the belt promptly fell off and the wheels would not roll backwards. I took both mowers back to the dealer for service. At that time I wAs given a copy of a service bulletin first issued in February 2017, affecting 3 modern numbers and a range of serial numbers. It indicates the rear wheel bushings may be undersize and cause the symptoms I describe. It also says if the mower is under warranty it should be repaired and if out of warranty may be repaired based on goodwill consideration. the Honda dealer must contact Honda Corporate to recieve good will consideration.

The Honda Dealer presented a positive report that Honda repaired at no cost. In reality they knew of a design/manufacturing error before my complaint in 2017 and had not made any effort to publicize this problem so affected owners could have them repaired. Most owners cannot or will not borrow a truck to return a mower that is out of warranty, they will instead fight the mower by dragging it backwards or lifting the back of the machine.

At first I was angry because Honda benifitted financially at the initial sale and appeared to make the service notice “secret” so other owners would not know. As I thought about it more, I realized that lifting the mower to pull it backwards defeated the foot guard and significantly lessened discharge protection. I contacted Honda again and suggested they recall the affected machines or at least make the service bulletin public on the Internet with searchable words. They responded that they fixed my mower and provide service bulletins to dealers as a form of engineering assistance. In reality I think they have covered up this problem since they have to provide new parts and pay the dealer for 3/4 hour of labor.

Finally, earlier this year my father in law had a cardiac event while mowing. One can question the wisdom of an 83 year old man mowing his lawn. I am sure his wife would not have let him had she known how difficult the units are to use.

I have a copy of the service bulletin if you need it. I hope you can convince Honda to make it’s service bulletins public and/or recall these machines since serious injury could occur. It also makes me wonde how many other similar problems Honda has covered up.

If you need any additional information, please call.

The product, in the report: Honda HRT216SDA lawnmower. Serial number MZCG 6183826 KG

My Honda HRT216SDA lawn mower fuel tank has cracked and is leaking fuel continually. I visited the Honda parts dealer and they refused to give me a replacement tank when I showed them your recall notice. I had no choice but to purchase a used fuel tank.

In April 2000 (#00·095) CPSC issued a recall of Honda lawn mowers for fuel tanks with seams that can split or crack. The recalled mowers have an engine serial number between 1128495 and 1438098. My Honda HRT216SDA lawn mower is 1613389, has been leaking fuel from a crack where the two plastic pieces are welded together. lf I only fill the fuel tank below the weld it does not leak. My serial number is beyond the recall notice, so the Honda dealer refuses to issue a replacement part. I am notifying CPSC so that the recall may be properly extended to cover all similar lawn mowers [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Honda 21-inch deck EZ Start 3N1 mower

We purchased a Honda 21 inch deck EZ Start 3N1 mower on May 1, 2015. We used it all summer with the bag attached and with the lever in the “mulch” position. On the date of injury, I switched the lever to the “bag” position. As I was mowing, the bag apparently flew off the mower, hitting me in the left leg and causing me to trip over the bag. I say “apparently” because one moment I was mowing and the next thing I knew I was face down on the ground. When I stood up, I saw that the left leg of my jeans was soaked through with blood. My husband took me to the nearest ER, where I received 18 surface stitches, plus numerous “mattress” stitches because of the depth of the laceration. The cut is approximately 4 1/2 inches long and is located about 3 inches below my knee. The ER doctor said that I can expect a nasty scar.

When we returned home, my husband found the grass bag on the ground approximately two yards behind the spot where the self-propelled mower had come to a stop.

Honda Lawnmower, Model HRR2165VKA serial number MZCG-7811329 I had my Honda on the bench for service, I am an service tech. I had to replace part number 76147-VG4-000 (cover roto stop) due to the fact that it had failed in many locations. This is a circular metal part which is just below the engine but located on the under side of the cutting deck. When replacing this part which was ordered from Honda and is an original part, I found that the actual cutting deck, where 4 bolts hold the motor to the frame had structural failures in all four mounting locations. I found structural cracks and completely missing metal pieces of the cutting deck. This would have never been found unless the motor was pulled from the deck and the deck inspected. As this structural failure hides very well and is difficult for a normal non technical person to identify. A complete failure might cause a running engine with a spinning blade to completely break free from the mower cutting deck and cause serious injury or death and or property damage.

The product, in the report: Honda Lawnmower

I have a Honda walk behind mower model HRX2172HXA (serial number MAGA-1575405). I have owned this mower for several years. This mower has developed a problem with the carburetor.

It has started letting gas to flow out the air filter housing even when the mower is shut off. It has progressively gotten worse. At one point, it filled my entire garage with gas fumes. My wife came in one evening and noted that the garage smelled of gas. When I went out the fumes were over powering. I was afraid to use the garage door opener as I thought the garage door opener motor might cause a spark. With the amount of gas fumes in the garage, there would have been an explosion or at least a fire. It was a dangerous situation.

I attempted to correct the problem by ordering a new carburetor from Plano Power Equipment in Plano, TX. The new carburetor looked exactly like the old carburetor. I installed it and within the month, it was leaking gasoline out the air filter hosing. This indicates to me that they have a design or manufacturing defect in these carburetors.

This evening while I was using the mower I shut it down for about 10 minutes. When I went back to it, gasoline was already pouring out of the air filter housing. It has reached the point that I have to use the fuel line shut off valve whenever the mower is shutoff.

I have an older model HRX217 at our rental house and I have never had this issue with that mower. The only time I have to use the fuel line shut off valve on this mower is when I am storing it for winter. I looked at the carburetor on this mower and it is a different design than the one on the problem mower.

He contacted the manufacturer on April 2, 2012 and was advised only that product is an out of warranty item. He then contacted the retailer who stated that incident is from normal wear and tear.

Caller states that this is a safety issue because the Roto Blade Control in the handle controls the blade and if broken there is no control of the blade that could cut/injure user or bystanders.

He is requesting to be reimbursed $55.00 for repair at manufacturer expense because he does not view this incident as from normal wear and tear or as a normal occurrence.

The product, in the report: Honda Push behind mower, being 6.5 Horsepower, read and charcoal / grey in color

I own a Honda Push Mower, Model HRX217HXA, and having serial number MAGA 1045663. I was using the mower to cut the lawn on this date. (I am not that mechanically knowledgeable regarding the mechanics of and the internal workings of the mower parts.) The affected parts of the product, I believe are called the recoil assembly parts. These are the parts that have the pull rope that emanates from the mower that a person would use to pull start the mower. After each pull the rope would retract.

I was operating the mower at the time of the incident and it had been running for approximately 15 minutes at the time of occurrence.

Suddenly, and without warning, the recoil area of the mower shattered on the inside the mower. This is the top most part of the mower; it has a protective type shroud over this area with horizontal slits about a 1/4 wide. The recoil part that shattered are a type of plastic / composite / or fiberglass.

When the recoil area shattered, it sent the shattered pieces of black / charcoal plastic out through the slits. Unfortunately, most pieces seemed to be directed toward me, the operator. As this occurred, the recoil rope itself, got sucked into the mower’s recoil area. As the rope got sucked in, it sheared the rope apart, leaving the pull handle and part of the rope outside the mower. There is a larger piece of shattered black / charcoal stuck in the slits, as it got caught in the same as it was projecting out of this area. A white plastic piece, looks like a small part in its entirety, is also stuck in the slits of the mower, on the side toward the operator.

There was no warning sound associated with the incident. The sound that occurred when this happened was comparable to running a lawn mower over small gravel, as it was the sound of things being chopped ground up, or could be comparable to using a blender to chop ice, nuts or coffee beans. In this case, it was the rotating area in and about the recoil area that was being ground up, upon itself.

At first I thought I had run over something with the mower, because of the sound, and the fact that I got hit with something on my shirt, my eyeglasses and my forehead. I was initially startled, and turned abruptly by the bombardment of objects, which were later determined to be the black / charcoal plastic pieces. I regained my composure and then shut the engine off as fast as i could.

I did sustain a cut on my forehead from one of the projecting plastic pieces and a scratch on my glasses. This was in the same immediate area. It appears that the glasses sustained the brunt of the impact of a projectile, then it sort of glanced off the lens, into my forehead, in the exposed skin area, just under the brim of my hat.

I did collect all the broken pieces, I could find, from the grassy area. Some were found approximately 15 feet from the mower. I did photograph the mower and pieces, and the injury on my forehead. I have not disturbed anything with the mower, since the incident. I did contact Honda Power Equipment by phone, and they advised that there was no recall on this type of problem, and that they were sorry that my mower was not under warranty.

I advised that I was not contacting them about a Warranty Issue, and the call taker,[REDACTED], advised that he would escalate the issue and have [REDACTED], contact me, but it could be up to three days from now. [REDACTED], subsequently contacted and does want me to take the mower to an authorized Honda Power Equipment Servicing Dealer for Inspection.
