My lawnmover engine exploded five minutes into mowing the lawn. A piece of engine shrapnel struck me in the chest. I was wearing layers of clothing and was not injured, other than the impact left a red mark on my skin. The mower fluids were checked before use, engine oil and fuel were sufficient.

The product, in the report: We bought a brand new craftsman M320 self propelled lawn mower. We made 2 passes around our grass, maybe 5 minutes of actually run time and the front wheels detached and went into the mowing blade. Shrapnel went everywhere and it destroyed the engine, as well as the wheels. I read the reviews on the Lowe’s website for this lawnmower and there were others that had exact same safety issue with the wheels coming off.
We bought a brand new Craftsman’s M320 self-propel lawn mower. After the second pass around our yard the front wheels came detached and went into the blade throwing shrapnel. Destroying the rubber on the wheel, braking the plastic wheels and destroyed the motor. After reading some customers reviews on Lowe’s website others have also experienced this problem.

The product, in the report: Craftsman 21 inch walk behind lawnmower model 247.397600
While in use, the blade on the lawnmower broke, ejecting a section of blade approximately 5 inches long at high speed from underneath the mower. Upon inspection, in addition to the broken blade, the blade mounting studs on the drive shaft pulley had sheared off. There was no previous damage to the mower or to the blade, and there were no obstructions, debris, etc. identified as the cause of the failure.

Craftsman lawn mower 247.374320 serial number 1F203K10571with Kohler engine developed excessive fuel cap leak after 2 years, now 3 years old. Sears parts say to replace with new cap assembly ($16 with shipping) but it did not fix problem. Filler and cap are poorly designed and failure is a fire safety and emissions issue. If mower has more than 1/4 tank of fuel as much as several ounces of fuel will leak out the fill cap and the filler neck down onto the mower deck during use. Sears parts chat agent says no incidents, then said issues with high heat or sun exposure. I live in Michigan, the mower is stored in an insolated garage, I only mow in the evening and only during the day occasionally when it is cool out in Spring and Fall. sears craftsman lawn mower with briggs and Stratton motor has a fuel leak developing on the plastic seam. next to the hot muffler definitely a fire and safety hazard. B&S will not replace the tank. I read online many customers having the same issue complaints. I wonder how many have been injured or killed. how many homes burnt down because of this defect. we all have the same issue the plastic fuel tank seams start leaking fuel. if they admit a problem they would be libel for injuries and damages to property. therefore they deny all complaints!

The consumer indicated about a year ago he first noticed that the lawn mower would leak gas while in motion. The consumer states the problem has become worse, more gasoline leaks from the lawn mower and more frequently. The consumer indicated that as he is pushing the lawn mower gasoline begins to splash out of the tank.
(5/11/16) While searching online the consumer came across many other complaints about gasoline leaking from similar lawn mowers on www.searspartsdirect.com. The consumer inspected the lawn mower and noticed the filler neck is an oval shape. The consumer states that the filler neck was a round shape when he purchased the lawn mower. The consumer believes the filler neck got very hot and possible melted.
(5/18/16) The consumer called Sears (800-252-1698) to inform express his safety concerns and the consumer was advised by the Rep. (name unknown) that the lawn mower was not recalled. The consumer states he was advised that the firm could not assist.
The consumer believes the lawn mower poses a fire hazard and should be recalled.

Regardless of how carefully I secure the gas cap, and no matter how carefully I check it, gas leaks out of the gas tank - from the cap - during operation. This has been a problem since I purchased the mower in July 2013, but I continued to try to secure the gas cap to remedy the situation. The gas leaks out and pools on the mower deck and is a fire hazard due to the proximity to the ignition and exhaust systems.

The bolt to tie the blade of the mower broken into two pieces today when I mowed my lawn. I bought it August last year and use several times last year. It was first time I use it this year. After the bolt broken, the blade spun out from the bottom of the mower, fortunately, I was not hurt. But other people using this product might get hurt in the future. The bolt suppose to be very strong and should not break into two pieces so easily.

Lawn mower began smoking when I stopping mowing. After allowing the mower to cool down, I noticed the plastic cover over the drive belt for the front drive mechanism was melted (photo enclosed). I removed the cover and found the volume under the cover filled with grass clippings (photo enclosed) and saw a large area of the cover melted away (photo enclosed).

WHEELS FALL OFF PUSH LAWNMOWER: I purchased, about three years ago, a Sears Craftsman lawn mower, model number 247.388140, and serial number 1c310861122. The purchase was made at the Sears retail location in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania. The product warranty had expired prior to the safety issue. >>>In June of 2013, while operating the lawn mower normally, the right front height adjuster failed causing the right front wheel to separate from the lawn mower. The failed part was ordered from Sears/Craftsman at a cost of about $17.00 and replaced. >>>Within about four hours of operation after replacement of the right front height adjuster, the left front height adjuster failed in exactly the same way causing the left front wheel to separate from the mower chassis. I BELIEVE THIS MAY BE A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD THAT COULD RESULT IN A POSSIBLE SEVERE INJURY. When informed of this situation, Sears Customer Service personnel displayed little concern. Perhaps the CPSC would be able to request parts orders of the replacement parts to ascertain whether replacement parts of the type that failed are being ordered with inordinate frequency, thus indicating an inordinate failure rate for this part.

I have a Craftsman lawn mower (manufactured by Huskvarna) that started to melt the plastic shroud over the drive-belt system. The shroud is located right under the muffler and I believe is too close. My concern is that this could be a fire hazard. Sears has replaced the shroud but I am concerned that it will happen again. The Model# is 917370660 and Serial # is 090811M022572. We purchased this last year but I think it was a leftover model. Thank you.

craftsman lawn mower model 917.388620 is unsafe. The bag system is poorly designed so the bag falls off repeatedly while mowing. This creates a trip hazzard as the bag falls off directly in front of where you are walking. the brackets that hold the bag onto the mower are not long enough causing the bag to fall off constantly. I have contacted sears numerous times but get no response or fix.

The product, in the report: Sears craftsman 550 briggs and stratton mower
The gas tank fell off of my lawnmower while the mower was running spilling gas onto a hot running mower. Upon reporting this issue to Sears the seller of the mower they indicated that the incident is a result of a bent crank shaft. I pointed out that the flywheel key never sheared and that I was unaware of striking anything. They indicated that the product is still under warranty but doesn’t cover gas tank falling off or fire danger. I reported this issue to Briggs and Stratton who said the flywheel key is not designed to prevent damage to the crankshaft and is an alignment mechanism only. This is contrary to the description on replacement flywheel keys that are for sale at the Briggs and Stratton dealership. I.E. Flywheel key failed to finction. Crankshaft damaged, gas tank falls off and causes extreme fire hazard.
Briggs and Stratton do not feel that there is any safety problem here.

I used a new Sears Craftsman lawnmower model #37455 for the first time on June 2, 2011. After using it for approximately 90 minutes in which it functioned normally, the engine made a loud pop, the oil was shaken loose, oil sprayed all over the mower deck, and smoke poured out of the engine. No injuries were sustained.
