The product, in the report: Brinly Lawn Roller Model PRT#481SBH
Caller reported that the Lawn roller detached and fortunately was stopped by a tree in his yard. The attachment broke causing the incident. Caller feels that this is a faulty design. The company was contacted and the rep advised that if a sharp turn is taken the incident will occur.
Caller contacted the retailer and he was provided with replacement clips which have a better design.
Caller feels that this product is unsafe and should be reported before consumers are seriously harmed. I purchased a 50 gallon lawn roller and put it together as per instructions. I used the roller for aproximately 30 to 40 minutes when the drum became detached from the towing frame and rolled out of control thru my yard striking a tree which stopped it. When inspecting what happened, I found that the “D” clips that hold the drum to the towing frame had broken causing the drum to detach from the frame. This drum, when full of water, weighs about 400 pounds. Had it not hit the tree it would have ended up in my neighbors yard possibly causing damage or hurting someone. I called Home Depot where I purchased it and the Outdoor manager told me he would give better replacement clips or a refund whatever I prefer. I got the new clips and compared them to the damaged original clips and found the new clips where made of a hardened material not cheap soft metal that comes with the roller. I used the roller for about an hour after using the new clips and had no further problems.
I called the company who makes the roller and explained what happened and the representative I spoke with defended the product saying they have never had any problems before and she told me that if you take too sharp of a turn with the roller this kind of incident may happen. When I asked where in the instructions it says that, she could not tell me because it is not there. I said if you know of this, why don’t you put it in the instructions, And again she defended the product. This attitude is what prompted me to contact the CPSC. This roller will eventually hurt someone if this problem is not addressed.
