The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. No incident, no one hurt

Made May 16, 2022, sent to the company May 27, 2022, published by CPSC Jun 13, 2022

The product, in the report: Wood Chipper

Product used was a Troy-Bilt Wood Chipper model number 24A-414B766. Impeller is mounted with four flail assemblies. Flails are secured to impeller through a combination of a spring pin and retaining clip. One flail came loose during operation of wood chipper and was tossed about inside the unit until the engine was stopped when the flail jammed the impeller from spinning. Upon inspecting the impeller, discovered retaining clip was missing on all four flail assemblies and three of four spring pins were missing. Fortunately, no injuries. Significant damage noted to flails (especially to the one that broke loose).

Additional information regarding the risk of harm: A technical expert on this product recently advised when the flail released and was tossed around by the impeller, pieces of metal could have been discharged from the side chute. Furthermore, when the flail abruptly forced the engine to stop when it jammed the impeller, there was a risk the engine could have exploded. With this information, I would think it is reasonable to conclude under either situation, pieces of metal could have impaled anyone standing nearby.

The product, in the report: Chipper Shredder Vac

The consumer stated that he was using his wood chipper vacuum when he powered it off and walked away . The consumer looked back that the product appeared to be steaming. The consumer figured that this was not steam and looked at the product little closer and figured this may be a gas leak deficiency. The consumer waited 15 minutes to inspect the product and found that there is a hole in the gas tank. The consumer knows that the muffler wore out to the point where it melted a hole in the gas tank. The consumer was using the product for an 45 minutes to an hour in his backyard. The consumer could not smell any gas, although he does have a sinus issue.

The product appears to show no physical damage like charring or discoloration. The product caused no damage to his home and was not injured by the product. The consumer opted not to call the fire department after the incident and has had no problems breathing. The consumer called the retailer on Monday to check if there was a recall on August 1, 2011. They called him back the next day and told him that the product was not on recall. The consumer called the firm on August 4, 2011 to inquirer if there was a recall for the product.

The consumer provided the firm with his phone number for a callback. The consumer got a response from the local dealer who reiterated to him that there was no recall for the product. The consumer was told by the firm that they were going to contact the company that made the engine of the product was made by another company and never received a response from the firm. The firm stated that they would call the other company and the consumer would be called back.
