The product, in the report: A wood chipper / left shreader powered by a B&S engine
In October of 2010, I purchased an Earthquake model 9070300 chipper/shreader from Tractor Supply in Westfield, Indiana. After two or three hours of use of shreading leaves, the Briggs & Stratton engine caught fire. The fire was between the muffler and the chipper housing. The fire was due to about a handful or two of leafs falling next to the muffler. The fire actually damaged the fuel line or gas tank, gas ended up pouring out the bottom. I was amazed that there was not an explosion. I believe the cause of the fire is that the muffler heat shield gets too hot, it gets hot enough to vaporize water. I believe there is a design flaw with the heat shield that it does not have an insulating gasket between the heat shield and the muffler, as a result the heat shield ends up getting as hot as the muffler does. The B&S engine diagram does not show any insulating gasket, so the engine was not missing it. I contacted B&S and they had me fill out a fire report and about a month later they basically told me they were not at fault, to contact my insurance company for the loss, and that I was at fault due to not cleaning the chipper after eight hours of use, which is a dumb statement for them to make since I repeatily informed them that the unit was only used for two to three hours. I complained to Tractor Supply and they ended up swapping my fire damaged unit for a new one, in which I have modified, I put a screen shield a few inches above the heat shield to prevent any leafs from touching the heat shield. The leaf feeder opening is directly above the heat shield. I just recently learned of this website which is why I am reporting this so late, with my leafs falling off my trees it reminded me of the issue. I feel that I am lucky that my wife and I did not end up being burned or killed from an exploding gas tank and noticed that this model of chipper/shreader is still being sold.
