Hurt, no treatment Made Dec 3, 2013, sent to the company Dec 31, 2013, published by CPSC Jan 15, 2014
The product, in the report: Shredder/Grinder 1450 Series Briggs & Stratton 6.5 HP motor
Caller was using his shredder/grinder on November 30th, 2013 shredding his leaves from his 200 feet wide x 75 feet deep yard.
Shredder was beside compost pile
Debris from leaf blower fell onto the muffler and then fell to the ground catching his [REDACTED] grass lawn on fire and the shredder/grinder on fire.
Caller’s hand was burned while he was trying to put the fire out by beating it with the rake and his hands but treated himself by running cold water over the burning area.
Consumer contacted the manufacturer December 2nd, 2013, left message but has not received a response from them.
UPDATE FROM CONSUMER: Enclosed is the completed form you sent me. It would have been better if you had just sent me a blank Word Document that I could have filled out rather than the enclosed partially filled out one that has the numbers correct but no description of the actual problem I was reporting. The problem with this piece of equipment in a nutshell is that by design, the broken up particles of leaves blow out both discharges (one is the intended on and the other is designed for branch grinding). When this occurs airborne particles fly all over the place and land on the muffler that is a basically rectangular box. The muffler has a guard that keeps someone from getting terribly burned, but its open structure allows the airborne leaves to float down and lay on its top. As my photo show, the leaves that are resting on the muffler are in fact smoldering. It was smoldering leaves that blew off the muffler and landed on the lawn that caused my lawn to catch on fire and my chipper grinder’s plastic feed chute to catch on fire. I am not an engineer but it would seem to me a simple fix on the engine would be a round muffler or an inverted “v” type of guard so that nothing could rest on it. I don’t think there is any simpler, cost effective fix that Sears/Craftsman could make.
I would appreciate it if you would please let me know whether I should contact Sears again or whether I should try something like hiring a lawyer in order to get my piece of equipment fixed. Thank you for your assistance in this matter. My case was lucky because I was “on the spot” within a minute of the fire starting, but if I had been in the front of my house raking leaves my entire backyard could have been on fire and the there would have been a burnt down garage and fences as I would have had to wait for the fire department to respond to a call. As it was, I was able to put the fires out with my hands and the rack (plus buckets of water).
