The product, in the report: Champion Power Equipment Chipper/Shredder, Model # 200946

A Champion Power Equipment Chipper/Shredder, Model 200946, burst into flames after about five hours of use from new over several weeks. After the first couple hours of use I noticed that the Air Cleaner Assembly, which is plastic and near the muffler, had melted. I called Champion support. They told me not to worry and sold me a new Air Cleaner Assembly which I installed. After another couple hours of use, the Ignition Coil, which is also near the muffler, melted at the plastic part that connects to the spark plug. Again I called Champion support. Again they told me not to worry and sent me a replacement Ignition Coil which I installed. After 45 minutes of use the unit burst into flames. There is a fuel line that runs near the muffler. The fuel line had melted and gasoline poured onto the engine. Fortunately, I had a full jug of water and was able to extinguish the flames before the fuel tank exploded or the flames spread to the vegetation or I was injured. My three attempts to contact Champion and ask that they investigate the cause of the fire have gone unanswered. It seems to me that a responsible corporation would want to know if the fire was a result of something unique to my unit or is a design flaw that may affect all of their power equipment that uses this engine. Placing plastic parts and rubber fuel lines next to a hot muffler is not a great design feature.
