Emergency room Made Oct 27, 2025, sent to the company Nov 4, 2025, published by CPSC Nov 26, 2025
The product, in the report: Model: RY40602VNM MFG: 107273101 Serial: LT22035N100090
I am filing a product safety incident report involving a Ryobi 40V Hedge Trimmer (Model RY40602VNM). On 25 Oct 2025, I was holding the trimmer in my left hand by the rear handle. The blades were off, and my right hand was not on the front safety handle. I reached forward with my right hand to remove a spiderweb from the blade area. While my left hand was still on the rear handle, the blade suddenly activated even though I was not pressing the front safety interlock; this should have been mechanically impossible. The activation caused deep lacerations to multiple fingers on my right hand, requiring emergency medical treatment and stitches. The tool has not been modified and was in normal operating condition. I have preserved the unit in its failed stated and documented the incident with photos. I have also filed a case with Ryobi (Case # [REDACTED]) and I am requesting a formal investigation. This is a critical safety interlock failure that could injure other consumers as well.

The product, in the report: Ryobi 40V 24” Cordless Battery Hedge Trimmer
I had a personal injury while using the Ryobi 40V 24” Cordless Hedge Trimmer that I reported to Ryobi in 2023. It was never resolved and I had to get an attorney involved and the representative stopped communicating. I just received an email notice that is now recalling my model due to personal injury. I feel Ryobi wanted to cover it up and they are negligent.

The product, in the report: Ryobi 24” Cordless Hedge Trimmer. 40V Lithium battery. Lime green handle, black and orange blade and cover.
Ryobi just recalled a hedge trimmer due to lacerations. My model number is in the recall, but they have denied my recall request because my serial number does not fall in their recall list. I want a replacement product. I am angry, because I suffered a laceration that sent me to the emergency room and required 13 stitches.

Emergency room Made May 14, 2025, sent to the company May 16, 2025, published by CPSC Jun 2, 2025
The product, in the report: Product Name: Ryobi 40V Hedge Sweep Hedge Trimmer Model Number: RY40601 Serial Number: EU15245N118346 Color: Primarily Ryobi lime green with black and gray accents Power Type: Battery-operated (40V Lithium-Ion battery system) Blade Length: Approximately 24 inches Weight: Approximately 910 pounds (with battery) Dimensions: Roughly 45 L 8 W 9 H Notable Features: Hedge Sweep debris clearing attachment Rear rotating handle Dual-action hardened steel blades Transparent hand guard above the trigger handle
Incident Description:
I am reporting a serious injury caused by a Ryobi 40V Hedge Sweep Hedge Trimmer Model RY40601, Serial Number EU15245N118346. On April 25, 2025, while my father-in-law was carrying the hedge trimmer during routine yard work, the blades unexpectedly activated and caused a deep laceration to his finger. The tool was not in use or being actively operated at the time of the incident.
This appears to have been a failure of the tools safety mechanism. The trimmer should not have engaged unless the trigger was intentionally pulled while properly gripped. The sudden blade activation while simply carrying the tool indicates a critical safety flaw. The injury required immediate medical attention, including several stitches.

Hurt, no treatment Made Oct 14, 2021, sent to the company Oct 19, 2021, published by CPSC Nov 2, 2021
The product, in the report: RYOBI 40V HP Brushless 15 in. Cordless Carbon Fiber Shaft Attachment Capable String Trimmer with 4.0 Ah Battery and Charger. This is the bundle/kit description. The model # of the bundle is RY40290VNM. The model # listed in field 4 is the model number of the power head itself (the component causing the shock). Model RY40009VNM
About 2 weeks ago I purchased a new Ryobi cordless lawn power head model # RY40009VNM serial # LT21086N120328 from my local Home Depot in bundle model # RY40290VNM . The first day I ran the power head I used several different Ryobi-made and approved attachments including an edger, blower, weed trimmer, and a pole saw. After about 40 minutes of use, the palms of my hands began to sweat a little - not dripping with sweat but slightly damp. I then began feeling sharp and painful shocks in my right hand (trigger hand) when gripping the trigger of the power head at full throttle. The first couple of shocks were so startling I jerked my hand away from the trigger and nearly dropped the entire tool. This power head runs on 40V batteries. With a little experimentation, I discovered I could run the power head without getting shocked if I held the trigger grip with my thumb and trigger finger being careful not to grip the rubber overmold near the recessed steel screws holding it together. Apparently, the shock is passing through these steel screw heads into the palm of my sweaty hand. I do not know why these screws are energized. Perhaps this a manufacturing defect (wire to the trigger assembly pierced by one of the screws) or a design flaw that is causing current to leak from the trigger/grip assembly. I do not know. I called Ryobi support and they promised to forward this report to their product safety department. I was told I would be contacted by safety directly. It has been a week since contacting them, and they have not reached out.
