The product, in the report: LIttle Wonder Model 3000 SE electric hedge trimmer

Have bee using the electric hedge trimmer Little Wonder Model 3000 SE made by Schiller Grounds Care for many years. On 05/09/2014, while using the trimmer, one of the two switches failed to stop the trimmer when released. I injured my finger (almost lost it). Went to emergency room, required seven stiches. The fingeris healing, however, I lost sensation in a portion of my finger. The trigger switch is not working when released. I called the company and they asked me to mail the unit so they can “look at it”. Are they any other reports about this product? Please advise, [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Little Wonder Hedge Trimmer- Model 3010-00-01, 30 inch long single sided 120 VAC

I am a mechanic at Filoli Center, a property of the National Trust for Historic Preservation (www.filoli.org) and would like to bring to you attention my safety concerns regarding Little Wonder Electric Hedge Trimmers manufactured by Little Wonder a division of Schiller-Pfeiffer Inc. Filoli Center has used several different Little Wonder electric hedgers models since the early 1980’s to maintain our public gardens. Our experience has shown the current model to be far less reliable than previous models. We pay $300 U.S. for each model 3010 and put a maximum of 50-70 hours a year on each unit. Three of the new units have failed in such a way that a shower of sparks is emitted from the motor area. Initially, when I bench tested a malfunctioning unit it produced a quantity of sparks sufficient to burn several holes through a synthetic fleece jacket I was wearing. This first sparking incident occurred In March of 2009. On 4/01/09 I spoke with a female individual by the name of [redacted] with Little Wonder at phone number [redacted] and explained my problem and expressed my concern with the brand new Little Wonder electric hedger model 3010-00-01 serial number 1050015400 that sparked and caught fire after 5-6 second run time out of the box. I show us as having purchased two hedger units model 3010-00-01 serial numbers 1070023039 and 1070023040 on 2/27/08. Unit ending serial number **3039 failed 10/09/08 and was replaced under warranty with unit serial 1080011425. Unit ending in serial **3040 failed 9/26/08 and was replaced under warranty with serial 1080011424. My recall of the reason for the units failure was electrical / electronics related. More recently on 8/10/10 we purchased two more units model 3010-00-01 serial numbers 1090011415 and 1090011416. Unit 1090011415 failed late July 2011 due to the excessive sparks being emitted from the motor and the loud abnormal bear box noise. The unit was replaced with moderate difficulty and delay with a new hedger serial 1110064530 on 9/07/11. The local repair shop indicated the shaft running through the armature in the motor was bent and the California Distributor Golden Eagle Distributing in Rocklin, CA. was not going to cover the repair under warranty. Eventually the unit was covered under warranty. Our usage consists of finely hedging established boxwood and english laurel hedges that only requires the cutting of leaves and some stems rarely exceeding 0.125 inches in diameter. Little Wonder markets the hedger as being rated to cut any type of hedge or shrub that does not exceed 0.500 inches in diameter. Yesterday( 10/06/11), another Little Wonder hedger was brought to Filoli’s in house mechanical repair shop by a horticulturalist with the sparking and grinding problem. It is the other unit purchased last 8/10/10 serial 1090011416. I believe the division Little Wonder of Schiller-Pfeiffer is marketing product with a serious defect and needs to investigate the quality of materials used in the construction of all the electric hedger models that have the defective motors.
