The product, in the report: lawn tractor
The steering gear on my MTD Yard Machine lawn tractor has broken twice now. This reaults in a loss of steering ability while using the mower creating a hazard for the operator as well as anyone in the path of the mower. The mower is used only at my vacation home and has seen very little use for its age. I would estimate that it has accumulated only 50-75 hours of use. The steering gear that fails appears to be constructed by stamping sheet steel and the pinion gear that interacts with it is a solid metal piece. Both times the gear has failed now, the same pattern has occurred. First one tooth fails or breaks and the rest of the teeth then break off one at time in rather rapid succession resulting in the total loss of control of the direction of travel. The lawn tractor is model #13A1762F729 and the gear that has failed is listed as Part #617-04024A. The serial # of my unit is 1E317B30413. The 1st failure was approximately August 2010 and the second this week - August 2012.
