   Troy bilt RTZ50 has been used for several years with no problems and no gas leaks. Today I started mowing and after 10 minutes I stopped and shut off the engine and walked over to talk with my neighbor. In about 5 minutes he notice it was burning with 6 foot flames coming from the engine with the plastic shell burning and melting. I had to run 100 yards to the garage for an extinguisher but by the time I go back there were flames completely around the engine and dworking on the gas tank that was full. The extinguisher put the flames out luckely before the gas tank exploded. After investigating I can find no gas leak or electrical problem.

   Troy-Bilt Mustang 50 Zero Turn. Lawn mower had continual oil/gas leaks that was serviced by professional lawn mower techs. Serviced last year, thought it was good to go. Just started the mower, went one lap around my property. My son asked for help for something. Turned off the mower, got off and 10 seconds and only 5 feet away, the whole motor went ablaze with 8 to 10ft flames. I had a hose nearby, my son ran to turn on the water. The water didn’t put it out but slowed it down the flames. My wife ran out with the fire extinguisher and we put it out with that. My mower engine is destroyed. If my son hadn’t called me for help, my back/head at minimum would have been burned pretty badly as quickly as it “flared” up if I hadn’t just turned it off/got off of it. I called Troy Bilt and they were very dismissive. Didn’t care. Response was “well, it is past two years”. For me and my insurance response as well...This isn’t just a warranty issue, this is a personal safety and hazard issue/mechanical defect issue that Troy needs to address. I barely was off that lawn more when it the engine blew up and could feel the heat. This issue which has been widely identified (found out after the fact) of having oil/gas gasket leak issues. One site recommended not putting in a covered area/garage. After almost personally getting burnt and possible property damage, the response from Troy Bilt was very frustrating. Troy Bilt pawned it off on my home insurance. My insurance said, there is a defect with their product, they need to correct this issue and because I was able to get to safety and get a hose and prevented any potential damage to my fence from the flames (3/4 feet away), they put it back on Troy Bilt.

   The following is documentation of my grievance against the Corporation of MTD. In March 2022 I purchased a Troy-Bilt riding lawn mower from Home Depot in Yuma, Ariz. This mower was for use on property I own in [REDACTED], some three hundred miles North of Yuma. I had attempted to locate one in the [REDACTED] area and was informed none were available anywhere in the Northern area therefore I made the purchase when I returned to my winter home in Yuma. As the unit was already loaded in my pick-up I obtained help and transported it North, unloaded it and returned home, this was some task as I am eight-two years old. In April 2022 I received a recall letter for various mowers due to a hazard threat, as my machine was up North I could not verify if it was on the recall list at that time. On returning to my summer home in [REDACTED] in June 2022 I located the required Identification numbers and called the telephone number as directed on the recall letter. A lady, using only her first name, informed me the mower was on the recall list, to not use it and to call a MTD Service shop located in Cottonwood, AZ. As that location is about 100 miles away I informed the lady that due to my age I was unable to transport the mower to there and questioned why I would have to pay for MTD errors. At that time the Representative stated it would be no cost to me, that MTD would pay for all transport and repairs, I was to call their repair center in Cottonwood. On 6-16-22 I called the repair center and was informed it was a husband and wife operation, that their truck was inoperable for a few days but would make the pick up in ten to twelve days. After about 25 days I called the repair shop again and was told by the lady they could not do anything, for me to call [REDACTED] and give the case number [REDACTED]. On calling the number a lady giving only a first name said she was a Representative of MTD and that the company would only pay $100.00 transport. I told her that was not what I had been told, that MTD was responsible for all costs. She then placed me on hold and transferred me to another first name only lady. We went thru the same conversation and she then placed me on hold for an extended period of time, when she finally came back on she transferred me to another first name only lady who then transferred me to another first name only lady who informed me she thought the company only paid $40.00 for transport. I again stated that was not what I had been told. She stated a supervisor would contact me later and closed the call. Several days later I came home and had a phone message from a first name only lady stating MTD did not pay for transport only the recall cost. I attempted to contact the company back but as soon as I entered my zip code as required I went on indefinite hold and could not get through. ON 7/12/22 I contacted the Better Business Bureau of Ohio and submitted a complaint. On 8/3/22 the BBB informed me my complaint was received and assigned #[REDACTED] and forwarded to MTD. On 8/11/22 I received a phone call from [REDACTED] no last name saying he had made arrangements with a repair company in Flagstaff, AZ to pick up and repair my mower, the only catch was that I would have to pay said company and MTD would reimburse me. I asked why I should believe they would reimburse me and he said because I said so and hung up, I never agreed to anything. Having shopped all over Flagstaff when looking for a mower I knew of the main repair shop located there. I called [REDACTED], tele. #[REDACTED] and [REDACTED] and asked if MTD had contacted them to work on my mower. Their contact man stated they had and he related the following. They were to pick up the machine, repair it and return it to me at which time I would be billed. I asked why they would not bill MTD and he stated at one time they had been a repair service for MTD but they were either slow pay or no pay and they did not deal with them, I asked if the MTD had left a call back number or individual, he said no, it was a call center. I notified the BBB of these details and was informed my case would be closed as they had to remain neutral and I obviously was not satisfied with how MTD had tried to resolve the problem. MTD rerstated they had made arrangements for me to pay, which I did not and after hearing they welshed on their bills there is no way I would deal with them. I called the 800 800 7310 number they had given BBB and after entering my zip code as required I was placed on hold for an extended period and then was instructed to push #5 and I would receive a call back in a short period of time, that was two months ago and as yet no call back. In Sept 2022 I had to return to [REDACTED] at which time I went to Home Depot where I had purchased the machine and asked to speak with someone from Management. On speaking with their representative he informed me he was not surprised and was not very flattering towards their merchandise, he then gave me a bulletin from Consumer Product Safety commission detailing the recall and specifically stating the owner pays nothing, that MTD bears the responsibility of all costs. On Oct. 20,2022 I called the number for Troy-Bilt located on the recall bulletin. The call was answered by [REDACTED] no last name for MTD. I stated my situation and he waited a minute then said the company would pay $40.00 but in my case would pay $100.00. I told him I had the Consumer bulletin stating no cost to the owner, he then kept me on the phone while looking for an answer. Nothing was being accomplished and I gave him my [REDACTED] phone number as a contact. Ohio BBB, [REDACTED], attempted to assist but apparently MTD pays more taxes in Ohio than I do. On 9/ 8/22 I telephonically notified the Consumer Product Safety Commission of these details and was informed my report would be sent to their Enforcement Branch. I am now submitting these same details in print.

   The pully on the deck of Troy bilt Bronco mowers keeps throwing the belts off, and eating up the blades. Hopefully they won’t become air missles. The pully won’t stay aligned, and Troy bilt has had complaints for a very long time. The repair guy we bought belts from said Troy bilt has known about this. This happens every 4 mows and it’s only a year old. We purchased May 2021, and Troy bilt won’t talk to us. Tried calling 21 times, and sent email, finally complained on FB, we’re getting a little communication, but they still have not called us back. Every time he changes this his hands/ knuckles are getting cut up. So far no stitches

   I purchased a Troy Bilt riding lawnmower from Home Depot on April 7th, 2021. I paid $230 extra for a 3 year warranty. Worked fine for the first summer. A few weeks ago I was prepping the mower with an oil change, clean air filter, etc. I started to mow my one acre property and, as I was finishing the mower came to a dead halt. I looked at the mower and gasoline was pouring in a torrent from the carburetor. I did my research and discovered that the nearest warranty location was [REDACTED] ([REDACTED]). Spoke at length to a young lady named [REDACTED]. She told me it could be up to 7 weeks before that could find the time to pick up my mower. Additionally, she let me know that this was a problem that they were aware of and that they had a backlog of these Troy Bilt repairs. I mentioned that gas spewing around and onto a hot riding mower was a serious safety issue. She told me that this happens after an owner changes the oil. Sounds like a defective carburetor. She said she would call me soon but I did not hear from her again. I don’t believe this place wants to deal with any liability that may arise in the event of a serious injury. I am going to Home Depot today to request a pickup and a refund. They need to know that they are marketing a mower that could cause catastrophic injury to anybody who owns this riding mower.

    On 4/21/18 the caller was using the product when the blade on the left deck disconnected and became exposed on the ground. The Deck adjustment piece is held on by a bolt in the lock washer. However there is no nut at the end of the bolt so the deck adjustment piece falls out of place and the left side of the deck falls down. Causing the blade to fall and become exposed. Caller believes this incident has been caused due to normal wear and tear on the product.

    4/26/18 Contacted the manufacturer and they informed the caller there is nothing they can do to assist him.

    Caller believes this product is a laceration hazard.

    This riding mower is a fire hazard. Even the Owners’ Manual contains a warning that debri (leaves, grasses) can accumulate around its muffler and catch fire.

    I purchased this mower from a Lowes Home Improvement store approximately 6 years ago and, in addition to using it to mow grass, I used it each fall to mulch leaves in our yard. After mowing and mulching, and prior to parking it in our garage, I would leave it sit in our driveway while I blew grass and leaves from our sidewalks and driveway. During this time, I frequently noticed smoke rising from under the mower’s hood and that grass and leaves accumulated next to the muffler were catching fire. Because of this experience, after each mulching job was complete, I’d use a gas powered blower to clear debris from the muffler area and elsewhere.

    This process worked fine until June 4th of this year (2017). After mowing the yard, I again parked the Troy Bilt Pony in the driveway while I cleared our sidewalks, driveway, and mower of debris which takes about 10 minutes. Then I restarted the mower and drove it into the garage. I noticed no smoke or fumes prior to parking it, but noticed the mower softly backfired when I started it up. Approximately 10 minutes after parking it, my wife went into the garage and found flames coming from under the mower hood. Fortunately, we were able to pull the mower out of the garage and into our driveway prior to the fire speading. The fire totaled the mower and caused about $10,000 of smoke damage to our home. Due to my clearing out debris from around the muffler, I’m convinced the fire was caused by something other than the muffler.

    I was curious as to whether other owners of Troy Bilt Ponys had similar experiences, and found a video on the web of an owner who also had his Pony destroyed by fire after a noticeable backfire.

    I recommend this mower be recalled or other remedy enacted.

    I was mowing my lawn when the mower died, I waited a few seconds then started it and mowed a couple of strips. Just as I was getting off the mower my friend yelled to me it was on fire. I got the fire extinguisher and my friend ran for the water hose. But not before the damage was done. My seat was on fire and the whole right side of the mower was in flames. I contacted Troy Bilt to inform them of the incident and the safety hazard the mower poses. The mower is a Troy Bilt Mustang Series RZT and has less then 50 hours of riding time, it wasn’t even ready for the first oil change. The warranty department didn’t care of the hazard it posed because it was subject to a fire so there was nothing they could do.I informed them it wasn’t subjected to a fire it was the subject of the fire and that myself or one of my family members could have been seriously injured or even killed. I thought they would take this seriously but they said everything was great from their end and they had no recalls or safety hazards to report. I asked them to investigate the matter and they may need to have a safety recall. I informed them that the product was defective and they were going to be getting more cases for this matter and just hope that no one dies from this. It caught fire at the ignition area where you put the key in. I don’t know if they messed this up in manufacturing or what but this is a very serious fire hazard and some one needs to investigate this. We took very good care of the mower we paid $3072 for it and only got to use it one full season. As you can see in the following pictures 4,5&6 the wiring was still in tact and the key was still in the ignition. I hope someone takes this serious before its to late. Thank You

    This caller is reporting her ride on lawnmower purchased from retailer June 13th, 2013 in Virginia. The unit was delivered the same day but when the caller was driving it while cutting grass on her and her husband’s one acre property the gears slipped from fifth to seventh gear and shot the lawnmower up through the yard. She & her husband returned to Lowe’s to complain and they were advised to return the lawnmower after being also advised by the delivery person that these models were being returned every day. However they kept the unit instead of returning it. During the week of July 18th, 2016 she was riding on the mower when she felt the seat jiggle, she turned the key off and when she got off she noticed that the seat had come loose and come off. Friday, July 22nd, 2016 she had been cutting grass when the deck spending that hold the blade fell off onto ground. She said it tore her yard up. There are no injuries being reported. She contacted the manufacturer July 26th, 2016 1 (800) 828-5500 and spoke with representative (she didn’t obtain his name), he advised her to take it to Buena Vista to have it repaired, 6 miles from her home. The 72 year old caller said that the store gave her repair places 100 miles away from her home.

    Sunday, July 19th, 2015 this caller had been using his riding lawnmower for approximately 20 minutes then turned it off, the temperature was around 105 degrees that day and he had gotten off of the lawnmower to cool off. Moments later he heard an explosion, he turned and saw that the riding mower was on fire with flames reaching three to four feet high.

    He contacted the manufacturer July 20th, 2015 and was advised that he should not be using the riding mower in temperatures higher than 95 degrees to which he replied that the manual did not provide this information then the manufacturer rep advised him that it isn’t in the manual it is just common sense.

    He is reporting this riding mower as a severe fire and explosion hazard.

    There are no injuries being reported.

    Safety Concern:

    The 1.3 gal fuel container is a medium gauge polypropylene tank that sits exposed on a metal platform to the rear and directly above the engine. Tank is directly to the front of the driver.

    Tank is secured to platform by just one medium size and strength nylon zip-tie. Tank wobbles when shaken by hand and more so when mower is driven. The nylon strap will be prone to deterioration and breaking from age, heat from the engine, and the constant flexing.

    If the cap on the tank was to loosen, the fumes could easily ignite and ignite the fuel in the container. If the tank was to rupture or the nylon strap breaks, the tank will fall onto the engine. If the tank is nearly full and ignites and/or explodes, the driver or anyone near will be immediately engulfed in gasoline and flames before they could react and safely escape.

    I consider the fuel container and the location and method it is secured to be a hazard and a grave incident waiting to occur. I am also surprised that the material used and method and location secured passed ANY safety inspections.

    The consumer stated that while his friend was using the riding lawn mower to mow the lawn within a few mins flames erupted from the exhaust pipe. The carburetor had leaked onto the exhaust pipe which ignited the fire. He used a fire extinguisher to contain the flames. This incident caused his friend to receive 1st degree burns to his back. First aid was administered to the wound. No medical attention was received.

    8/2013 The manufacturer was contacted and he was informed to take it to an authorized dealer and to make a claim on his insurance. He took the unit to a dealer and was advised that he needed proof of purchase for them to assist him.

    The product is not involved in a recall.

    He is concerned that this lawn mower is a fire hazard and should be reported.

    No injuries sustained. I was mowing my lawn with a troy-bilt lawn tractor when all of a sudden it caught fire. The wind was blowing very strong and before I could get a shovel to try and put the fire out it had grown stronger and had caught my lawn on fire. I had to call 911 to get assistance to put the fire out. The mower was a total loss and the yard was burnt.

    I checked my Troybilt 20 HP Kohler 42 inch cut riding lawnmower. It had 1/2 tank of gas. I took it out to blow the leaves off my driveway. About 1/3 way down the driveway fire flames shout up out of the mower.I turned the ignition off and got off, but now before it burned my arm. The wind was blowing fiercely and blew the flames into the woods. The mower flamed to hotly I couldn’t get by it to call the fire department so a neighbor called it for me. Seven neighbors came to help and four firemen came from the Sissonville Fire department. They finally got it put out after it burned about 1 acre.

    I called Troybilt and asked them to replace the mower and pay for my shrubs and the hole in my driveway. They said they could not pay because it caught fire because the muffler was in a place that caught leaves and grass on fire and the manual said not to run over tall grass or leaves when the motor is warm.

    If the muffler does this, shouldn’t it be put in another place or shouldn’t the mower be recalled.They said they had gotten many complaints of this happening

    We purchased a Troy Bilt Kohler Courage 42” Riding Mower in 2009 at Lowes. Here the model number SV540S13AV60KG011 and the Serial Number 38045135231B258H20363. On 4/8/2011 about 11am central time. My boyfriend was cutting the yard on one hot morning, suddenly the MOWER stop; pop with a loud noise and suddenly flames was coming from under the hood, just giving him seconds to escape. We start putting water on the fire to put it out but the fuel line rapture from the heat so we couldn’t do nothing until the fire dept. got there. We also called 911 at the same time while trying to put the flames out.

I was unable to find the part of the blade that separated as it apparently was slung away. I asked via email if Troy-Bilt wanted the blade to inspect it.     We purchased a Troy Bilt 18 HP Kohler 42’’ riding mover on 03/06/2009 at Lowe’s for 1,125.17. We weren’t offering to purchase a warranty for the product. On 7/27/2011 2:00 p.m. central time My husband [REDACTED] was cutting the yard on one hot afternoon, suddenly the MOWER stop; pop with a loud noise and suddenly flames was coming from under the hood, just giving him seconds to escape. We were so afraid and in frozen mode. We immediately CALL 911, fire department arrived putting the fire out, and informing us to come down the next business day to receive the report. While the fire fighters were there we were on the telephone speaking to Lowes store manager [REDACTED], explaining what had just happen. He was very concern, however forward all contact information to the troy bilt rep. that covers this central location, indeed, a day later a rep. call already giving us an answering his company wasn’t going to be responsible and its 2 yrs old. I asked him. How can you make a determination yet, you haven’t seen the lawn mower? You haven’t once asked are we okay? He was already so not professional. I asked for his full name, he decline in giving me his last name only giving me [REDACTED]. We did come out with an [REDACTED] from Lowes customer service department on the next business day after we repeatedly call back to Lowes. The mower was still in the same place. Afterwards inspecting the mower he/she restated the same statement he said to us previous. I asked for Troy Bilt corporate info. He decline and said we will get back to you in 3 weeks. He asked for the receipt, fire report and a list of lost items. A copy was given. We did contact Troy Bilt /Corporate, [REDACTED]. I don’t know what type of water the people drink there at Troy Bilt, however they were so RUDE!! We yet haven’t heard from [REDACTED].

    There is a serious danger issue w the troy built super bronco riding mower, in reference to the brake accelerator placement. the brake and accelerator are positioned together where as if at the time of need for any braking in a front up hill lifting while applying brake your heal will push the accelorator at the same time causing the forward motion to force machine up and over on top of you. i have been mowing w a riding mower some 40 years and have never had a safty issue of this magnitude, this happened 2 times to me where as to entire tractor has completlty lifted up and over on top of me both times still running including blade rotation, first time climbing a mid grade hill second time on flat area when branch cought my leg applied brake again to find the accelerator also at the same time over powering the brake front lifting, the more and faster the maching lifts your heel forces accelerator faster as it literly rises strait up and over on top of me again with blades still spinning and only able to remove machine w emergency assitance by nieghbors. first time machine toped over me and rolled top over 3 times down hill destroying the cowl and denting ,break up the unit cosmetically. personally injury included sprange ankle cuts scrapes and bruises, the reason for the first brake application was that the grass shoot on deck had caught on a raised small stump to avoid it i tried to stop, second time within the month on flat ground as my leg cought on branch limb the machine forced my leg and branch to collide and tore my leg thigh skin appox 12 inch documented pic severely bruised soreness afterwards with now continued numness and pain but more concerning as the machine fell over and on top of me my arm and shoulder was torn ligament and pain,and partial movement is still to this day contimuing. i contacted company and lowes where purchased and asking for a replacment product and that a warning be issued and design changed where i feel i was just blown off as just a typical complainer with no merit. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS DESIGN FLAW, THIS NEEDS TO BE ADVISED TO OTHERS BEFORE LIFE OR LOSS OF LIMB OCCURS i would be surprised if this was the first they were advised of this, i noticed the new model has the brake and accelerator seperated but like myself i am sure there are thousands that have this design and are in great danger. please advise me of your findings and the results if any on the resolution if not for me for the other endangered that may not yet be aware. thank you
